So I guess this leaves Greg Walden as the only Republican in the entire state?

He frequently told Republicans that he looked forward to the day that he would no longer be introduced as the last Republican to serve as governor -- but it didn't happen in his lifetime.

Cruel story, Bro.

Vic Atiyeh, I find after a quick google of the guy, was the first elected governor of Arab descent in US history. His dad was a Syrian rug merchant.

Somehow I imagine most GOP eulogies for the guy will leave that part out.

Also of note he was the head of Boy Scouts of America and he established a statewide food bank in Oregon which was the first state in the nation to do so. Seems like he was decent sort.

RIP.

He sounds like he was a good guy.

Some of us have actively evil governors, will trade for dead meh.

The Oregon GOP could use a little meh right now.  Between the evil spammer running for governor and the "send me your pee" guy running the party, they are as far from the GOP of Vic's day as it's possible to be.

Nah, we still have crazy Art Robinson running the state GOP into the ground.

Google his name - lulz guaranteed. Among other things, he's proposed dismantling public schools and disposing of nuclear waste by sprinkling it into the ocean.

Ah.. a joke only long time Oregonians will get... He was from back in the day when GOP wasn't a freak show.  One of our GOP governors setup a music festival out in the boonies to get the hippies that would be protesting away from the convention in town.  Old school GOP in Oregon was actually pretty chill.  He was from the same political cloth as Nixon, (who made the EPA), but not the same ethical cloth.  A real conservative, pro business, but wanting to conserve Oregon and it's people.  Sadly he couldn't run as a Republican in today's political climate, he'd probably be a Dem which shows how far right the pendulum has swung.

Oregon as Democratic state is pretty recent. From 1860 (our first presidential campaign) to 1984 it when Dem only 7 times (Wilson, FDR, Johnson and against Grant)  Vic was the 32nd Governor, 20 (including him) had been Republican (1 independent).  As the rest of the country moved more right, the Centrist Right Oregon found itself as a Democratic state (mostly) and once the GOP moves back to center, Oregon will move to a Republican state again.  We just look Dem because the mainstream GOP has gone that far right.

/But that movement back is a LONG way off

So we get a thread about an ex-Governor but no James Garner thread?

No mention of Art Robinson is complete without his flyer he sent out.  I wonder how many people just mailed him a sample?  I still cannot believe he is running AGAIN to try and unseat Defazio.

Well hey-howdy-do, it's a Republican who seemed to be an actual decent dude. Too bad he's dead and of a time past. Make a couple more, GOP, if you're still even able to do that.

When I first moved to Oregon, it was the days of Lon Mabon's "Oregon Citizens' Alliance." It was literally the factor that made me start identifying as a Liberal.

If Republicans across the country were more like Vic Atiyeh, they'd be winning elections even in blue states. Sadly, it's just not the case.

Oregon Republicans are an especially absurd sort. They basically shiat-canned the closest thing they've had in 20 years to a potential crossover candidate, both by electing a f*cking basketball player to run for Governor then naming a SOCIOPATH as the head of the Oregon GOP.
