Maybe there should be some kind of awareness test before allowing people to post things anywhere on the internet.  Then again, without those lapses in judgment to chuckle at, the internet would be a diminished place.

"Hopefully it'll teach her a lesson and hopefully she'll respect us cyclists," a bicyclists said.

Teach her a lesson?  Sure, that'd be good.  But then you got carried away.

She posted a stupid video, and never came out once as a cop, or involved her department.

Tacky? Kinda, but America as a whole is kinda tacky. That's kind of who we are as a people. Outrage? Not so much, and I bike a lot. About 100 miles a week or so. I hear it all. I can understand some of the outrage, especially when I see half-assery by fellow cyclists. I get annoyed by a fair number of fellow cyclists for some pretty damn stupid behavior.

Consequences for speaking? Free speech doesn't preclude consequences, but administrative leave for a dumb video, that doesn't implicate her department seems a bit much. Folks maybe should relax a little, and just because someone does a blog article or a video that is kind of dumb, doesn't mean that they deserve some kind of hate-a-thon for their stupidity.

As for "respecting cyclists"? Yeah, good luck with that. I'm sure that her time off work is going to give her a full 180 degree spin, and if you believe that, I have some lovely ocean-front property in Arizona to sell you. Cheep.

Here's the video.

biatch has a voice that grates on your ears like fingernails on a chalk board and comes across as batsh*t crazy. And after watching the video I'm pretty sure that if she thought she could get away with it she'd run down a bicyclist.

It's just an annoying little video, not worth ruining somebody's life over. Luckily for her she was just a volunteer reserve officer and this incident won't ruin her life.

Well I thought her video was funny.  And all the crybaby comments coming from all those humorless posers were even funnier.  What's wrong with them anyways.  They dress up in their little play-acting outfits and ride around town irritating everyone, pretending that they're in the tour de france and all, and they can't see the humor in it.  Everyone else is laughing at them, why can't they laugh at themselves?

The video began to make waves on the Santa Paula Police Department's Facebook page in an unrelated post written by Police Chief Steven McLean. In the post he wrote "I had a very active day to day. Think I just might have a beer."

Priceless. That's some fine civic leadership there, Lou.

She looks and sounds like an Ann Coulter in training, which is to say there's nothing interesting, funny, or well delivered here. Her audience consists of exactly two kinds of people: the desperately horny who've constructed a world in their minds where being her fan makes them a potential suitor, and mean-spirited little troglodytes, in whose shriveled half minds this sounds like intelligent snark.

There is, of course, overlap.

It's been a thing with a certain class of women for some time now. Usually with shrewish sorts of despicable harpies without a shred of dignity or self awareness. It's common enough today...

Going to be interesting to see what the accident rate is like when only the police have manual-drive cars. No doubt there'll be an initial spate of police-reported "autodrive malfunctions" causing civilian cars to crash into police cars-- until they learn that computer data can prove the autocars weren't the ones at fault.

Public officials, whether hired/appointed or elected, are never actually  not considered to represent their particular branch of government, with all of the expectations of professional behavior that this entails.

It's stricter than private industry, yes, but not  unreasonably so, especially in the case of enforcement officials whose post gives them significant legal authority even off the clock.  And generally speaking it's explicitly written into their contracts and there is mandatory job training/seminar crap about almost exactly this kind of thing, so she can't really protest ignorance of the standards here.

// Side note: if you've ever wondered why you have to sit through boring seminars about shiat that's both common sense and written into the law/contract like workplace sexual harassment, etc... this.  This woman is why that kind of shiat is necessary.  Not to prevent people from doing dumb shiat, but to deprive them of the ability to get off easy with the 'but I didn't know' puppy-dog eyes bullshiat.  She knew she was violating her contract as a public employee, and she did it anyway.  Zero sympathy for the suspension, it's the appropriate penalty.

If you are a cop or a volunteer cop, you should never post a video of yourself declaring that you hate a certain group and wishing harm on that group. It should be common sense to know that doing something like that could lead to accusations of discrimination from that group if you are involved in any incidents with that group in the line of duty. Even if she didn't mention she was a reserve cop or mention the department, she has to remember that she is still a cop 24/7 and what she does even off the clock reflects on the department.

Pretty much.  The only thing I differ on, is that I used to work for the govt. and at that time, I held myself to a slightly higher code of conduct in certain matters, just because it was the right thing to do.  Some time off was fairly appropriate, no big deal.

The time off will make her even more annoyed at cyclists.  Respect has to be earned, I'm talking to you, fellow cyclists.

proteus_b: People who hate bicyclists should just be killed, and their children killed, and anyone who protests should be killed. Other than that, carry on as usual.

I take bicyclists on a case by case basis.  In our area, we have a burgeoning bike movement that has spawned a number of responsible and well-trained riders.  But the availability of bikes and new bike trails have also brought other ... less responsible people out.  Like the guy who's riding his bike on the sidewalks in an area he's not supposed to.  His clue should have been that the sidewalk is barely big enough for the pedestrians he was knocking to the side.  Or the guys (there's been several) who ride with traffic until they hit a stoplight, where they suddenly switch and go through the pedestrian crosswalks without stopping.

So yeah, as someone who rode bikes frequently, I can see how some bicyclists are really awesome and how others make you go crazy.

Cyclists.  Blegh.

They're a great example of specific folks destined to ruin it for everyone.

1) Sweaty ass cyclists who walk into stores and pull out 'cash bags' from their body (waistline/breasts) which are dripping with sweat, then proceed to hand that dripping cash over
2) Sweaty ass cyclists 'airing out' indoors, spread eagle, in spandex
3) Cyclists who ride 4 across without a care in the world, despite it being a 2 across and by-the-shoulder rule
4) Cyclists who refuse to obey the rules of the road
5) Cyclists who shun taxpayer funded bike paths setup for their safety and ride 25yds away on the road - clogging up the streets
6) Weekend peletons in 'scenic' areas which suddenly become less scenic when all you see are spandex clad cyclists

I don't know what powers reserve police have in her city, but expressing opinions like that can create the impression that she won't be impartial when doing things like traffic enforcement (I am presuming that traffic enforcement is the kind of monkey work that reserve officers are used for). When you state a prejudice about any group, be they cyclists, blondes, blacks, overweight people, homosexuals, it calls into question your ability to fairly enforce rules against them. This is especially important for police because of the enormous authority they have over others. She should have known better and should learn to use better judgement.
