It's not unusual for companies in developed countries to do their manufacturing in third world countries where the wages are low and there are no unions.

In retrospect, Germany's mistake during re-unification was trying to make the East as much like the West as possible. They could have had their own South Carolina, full of toothless inbred hillbillies willing and proud to serve as cheap labor for their more civilized countrymen. We farked up the south so bad during reconstruction those illiterate peasants will never catch up. That's just German arrogance for you. They never think they have anything to learn from anybody.

I've toured that factory before. It's gigantic. The cars are hen put on a train to charleston where they are loaded into cargo ships and sent across the Atlantic.

With this news, it's time for Jezza to start hating BMW.

It's BMW: Bowel Movement Werkes. BMW hasn't been relevant since the 1970's, when they produced real cars.

You seem fairly ignorant of what's been going on in Germany.  The east wasn't their Alabama, Bavaria is.  Why would any country want two Alabamas?

1970s BMW 323i (E21): 2.3L M20 inline 6 with Bosch K-Jetronic fuel injection: 137 HP
2011 BMW 328i (E90): 3L N52 inline 6: 230 HP

Yes, I'll give you that the E90 is a considerably heavier car, but it sure as hell doesn't crawl. But for what it's worth, I'd make space in my living room for an 02 roundie or '86 635 CSi.

No, Bavaria is not Germany's Alabama. Alabama is.

And there are plenty that say the Union didn't fark them up enough.

Those evil Germans, paying people good money to make cars, and planning to do even more of it. All those toothless hillbillies would be better sucking off the government teat on welfare, so they could thank leftists for their largess and good intent.
You lefties ought to get together and make a law against this kind of meaningful work. It's double plus ungood because those simpletons might actually take pride in making fine automobiles. We can't have that, not when there's still government cheese in the warehouse to shove down someone's throat. For their own good, of course, because leftists know best. Ask anyone up thread of me. They'll tell you what great people they are and how you should listen to them, and how wonderful all their ideas for society are.
Go ahead, ask them.

You have a point.  I was thinking more culturally and politically than economically.  There's a LOT of parallels between the American south and the German south.
