Julie Schwartz had hard data proving that apes on covers increased sales. So why not put an ape on the cover every now and the ?

/the modern reboot every six months with variant covers and a new #1 fad is more damaging than anything listed in the article.

Partly.

IIRC, Dazzler was also created in conjunction with Casablanca Records for a proposed movie.

The movie never happened, but Dazzler did.

/Casablanca probably went to Marvel since Marvel had a history with Kiss.

gerrymander: Female Thor!

In fairness, the annoying part about this one is less the ham-handed attempt to try to breathlessly deny how male-dominated the comics industry is, it's that the change itself is blatantly misogynistic.

Even the damned  frog gets his own identity and name when he picks up the hammer, and most other heroic people that have handled it here and there are just "oh shiat, it's that guy that was already kicking out ass, but now with the power of thunder".  But apparently when a  woman picks up the hammer, she loses her own identity and just becomes Thor because clearly she doesn't have anything of her own in that pretty little head to contribute.

It's sort of like if they'd handled the Captain America change by having Rogers get hit with a stream of brown dye in a terrible industrial accident, then develop an unexplainable craving for watermelon and fried chicken.  It's nice that you're trying and all, but sometimes you really need to think your unfortunate implications all the way through.

They created a woman character with this ability.  Her alternate take on the power was the ability to mimic anything she saw, including imitations of voice through lip reading.  She would rent Jackie Chan and Bruce Lee films to learn martial arts.

delciotto: Kaiju sized Hulk sounds good to me.

And if the madder Hulk gets, the bigger Hulk gets...

I think there needs to be MORE mashups with Japanese properties. Specifically, Nagai Go's properties.

I want to see Iron-Z, the mashup of Iron Man and Mazinger Z with Juzo Kabuto inventing robotic armor in a cave in the Southern islands of Japan at the end of WWII, becoming the Golden Age Iron-Z, passing the mantle first to his son-in-law Howard Stark during the Silver age and eventually to his grandson, Koji Anthony Stark. I want to see Iron-Z, in all his varied armor designs over the years, fighting his war of escalation alongside versions of Marvel heroes blended with Go Nagai characters, including his fellow armored heroes Getter Machine, War Boss, Rescue-A and Steel Patriot Jeeg, against an ever-stronger army of Hydra led by Dr. Hell and his cronies Count M.O.D.O.C., Madame Ashura (who is a masked woman who can also become the male Baron Blood) and Viscount Zola, then the stakes getting higher when the Mandarin Empire arises, the leader of which wears the Ten Rings of Vega, stolen technology from space brought to Earth by the Skrulls, and Koji must enlist the aid of a stranded Kree captain who has brought a prototype ship and armor suit, the last and best one produced by the same civilization that produced the Ten Rings before they were wiped out by the Skrulls. I want to see Hank Pym invent a female android that thinks she's his wife but changes in a flash into any one of a myriad of costumed super-women when a hero is needed. I want the Devil Rider to be a good man who willingly gives up entry to heaven in order to merge his soul with the Spirit of Vengeance, a demon who was once an angel, so that he can fight off the invasion of an ancient demonic race that had been sealed away for thousands of years but is now returning thanks to the worship of them by the shape-shifting Skrulls who have been replacing humans for years. I want to see the Marvel mutants living in a school where the most inappropriate things happen, yet fighting to prevent a future they have not only foreseen but actually visited in which a devastated Earth is an ultra-violent, post-apocalyptic battlefield between mutants and humans. I want to see the touching story of Wolverine, who goes to Japan and falls in love with Mariko Abashiri, who is bound by family honor and the gears of fate to one day lead a clan of criminals who are reviled by both the law and the Yakuza, for him to sire a daughter with Lady Mariko, named Tsubasa Howlett, who will one day be kidnapped and grow up brainwashed into being a Yakuza assassin with the same mutant abilities as he, whom he will rescue from that life but not entirely from that lifestyle. I want to see the Avengers with a lineup that includes Susano Oh and an under-dressed masked female martial artist who may or may not be Natasha Romanova.

Also, Bat-Mazinger (obviously not a Marvel-Nagai mashup), where the Waynes are visiting Japan with their son Bruce and are shot and killed in a crime-ridden alleyway in Tokyo, and the boy is then adopted by kindly scientist Juzo Kabuto, who raises him along with his orphaned grandsons Koji and Shiro and is then himself killed years later by a hired gun of the Yakuza but manages, with his dying breath, to reveal to the boys the location of the giant cave in which his automated robotics lab has built a remarkable weapon against evil, so that Bruce grows up to become the pilot of a giant, bat-themed super-robot of vengeance along with his younger foster-brothers who eventually pilot vehicles and bat- and bird-themed robots of their own (along with the daughter of a local police lieutenant). Villains also pilot giant robots, mostly vastly inferior to our heroes', with the exception of Joker-Z and Harley-Q, robots which were prototypes stolen, modified and piloted by the assassin who killed Juzo and his moll, an insane former psychiatrist.

And... And...

And I want to sleep now. It's very late and I'm obviously very, very tired.

Like I said in other posts if you want to satisfy the PC clowns it's no big deal, just make new characters. But for fark sakes quit changing the basics about classic characters because it's just hamfisted. Lets give Black bolt tourettes and make the Human torch gay and put Reed Richards in a wheel chair, that's the ticket.

I won't go so far as to curse it like that, but it has certainly grown from a niche fandom to dominating, if
not supplanting, all other forms of visual art, probably due to a combination of simplicity of style and the
fact that an awful lot of Americans have grown up on 80s and 90s era Japanese visual media and they
really don't know anything else?

But, really:  is the stereotypical over-inflated SailorBouncyBouncy any less absurd than Rob Lilefield's
chest and belt pouch fetish?  Or Alex Ross' Norman Rockwell-on-Acid stylizations?

"Anime" is a style of presentation for animation, not a full-fledged medium.  The difference between, say
ANIMANIACS and SAILOR MOON is one of visual style, not one of technical execution.

(And yes, I know there are many genres of anime, but regardless of genre they all share a common
style of visual presentation heavily informed by Japanese cultural assumptions).

Anime covers animation originating in Japan.  So while it may not be the entirety of the medium in itself, it is the entirety of that medium as output from the country.  There are many different styles of animation within anime.  While there are some common styles (especially in the really popular titles), people that say "I hate anime" are generally over-generalizing the style based on popular shows like DragonBall and Sailor Moon.
