As a guy who remembers having only three networks, this is not a good thing. CNN haters aside, the emergence of CNN was a huge step in the direction of good journalism. Their current misguided effort to compete with FOX's "tell them what they want to hear" approach has diluted a once great brand.

Les Moonves? When I was teaching English in Taiwan 1995-1997, my lifelines to America were
1) CNN Asia which was of course world news oriented more than just Americacentric (we started hearing the news about Princess Diana as a newsflash like 10am because it was 3am Europe time when it happened)
2) Art Bell steaming on live radio via RealAudio
3) A Taiwan cable channel called the CBS hour that had some CBS programming, including David Letterman, on two week delay. It was a two week delay to get Mandarin subtitles that my students said were excellent and that they could understand the jokes. David Letterman frequently explained that Les Moonves was difficult to work with.

It isn't just bad news for CBS, it's bad news for everyone, because it means that others are now trying to make the Murdoch deal happen.  It looks now like it's a foregone conclusion.

Makes sense. Them and ABC are the only networks that don't have a real 24/7 'news' channel.

If it means Jeff Zucker is out of a job, it can't be all bad.

It just means he'll find some other network to crash and burn.

Can it be FOX "NEWS"?

Not content with giving Julie Chen 2 shows on CBS, obviously he wants to give her an entire network.
He may even rebrand it as the "Chen News Network".

After seeing how he completely and utterly destroyed NBC and salted the earth so that no ratings will ever grow there again, why would anyone ask him to run their news channel absent a Brewster's Millions scenario.
