Damn you east coasters (and Europeans)..!  The race is live at 4:30am here in Los Angeles, so it'll be the DVR for me... and a total social media blackout.

In addition to 2 IndyCar races tomorrow, Tour De France, and so much other stuff.

Glad NASCAR had an off week!

There are far more important thing to talk about here, F1 fans.

Why, in three months time, are we still supporting Vladimir Putin and his cronies with an F1 race after MH17? Why has this travesty not been canceled now we know that the rebels Putin armed shot down a passenger jet packed with innocent civilians, and with Russian military assistance to boot?

It's time to boycott the Russian Grand Prix:

Remember you said that. There is noting worse than people coming in to threads about a current event and then complaining about spoilers. I'm sure you're not that guy, but there are lots like that.

So, Rosberg earns the pole, Lewis crashes out in Q1. But that's impossible, Vegas says Hamilton will win and the Fark cognoscenti tells me that Hamilton is better!

Also, repave the woods, bring back the old Hockenheimring, and hang Bernie and Hermann Tilke.

Oh, I know. I'm just pouty because if I want to see the race live I will have to overdose on Red Bull (or "Toro Rosso" for my Italian friends), and then call the paramedics it take me to the emergency room for a rapid heartbeat.

Just rare when I can participate live and not be a vampire.

Bernie has no moral compass. I already hated him and now I can just pile more on my justification.

I just read that Hamilton has had a new gearbox fitted & now starts 20th.
He's gonna need one heck of a drive to get any sniff of points today.

With how fast those Mercedes are I don't think it will be tough for him to get into the top 5. That being said I would love to see Williams win the race but not likely. I wouldn't bet against Nico barring any malfunctions.

Does F1 rely much on previously-laid-down rubber to improve grip with the cars like some other series, and if so will the rain after qualifying screw with teams' setups (more than the change in temperature that they've already been talking about)?

2014-07-20 07:55:17 AM

I think the rain will mainly have an influence on what tyres are chosen.

You don't want to pick up the marbles until the end of the race, when you want to grab every ounce possible to make sure you meet minimum weight. During the race everyone tries to avoid "dirty" spots unless they're right on the line through a turn.

I do think F1 lost a significant strategy element when they took away fueling from pit stops and moved to managing fuel consumption by switches alone.  We no longer have short pitting and all pit stops are 2-3 second tire changes only. I understand the safety element involved but most racing series manage to handle fueling safely.

"The German Grand Prix organisers had a bright idea to try to stimulate slow ticket sales ahead of this race. They offered fans 10 euros off a ticket for every goal Germany scored in their World Cup semi-final against Brazil. When German fans don't come to Hockenheim (notorious for how deafening the stadium section can be), to watch a German driver in a German car dominate the race, there's a _huge_ problem.

Nope, not too shabby. But it's mitigated by a dominant car. Rosberg could have done the same thing in his car, but because he didn't boob it up in qualifying he didn't have to.

Yep. Cheapest tickets were about 165 euro ($222) going up to around 500 euro ($680).
Add to that the fact that it was hot on the heels of a world cup win (where a lot of German sports fans went to Brazil & the remaidner stayed behind & drunk 3x their body weight in beer & it's no surprise there were empty stands.

Do we have a thread coming down the pipe?

There is according to yesterday's thread, but it isn't posting until 11am.

For some reason, the guide has the 4:30am broadcast as a repeat, so it is only going to record the replay.  Sounds like there was some fun at the start I'll want to watch.

Watching live now, because who cares about spoilers when the winner is known after qualifying.

On mine it wasn't set as a repeat, but I had to set up the recording anyway because it was on a different channel.

*crickets*

Those stands really were empty.

Plus its a boring season even by F1 standards. Barring mistakes or breakage only two cars can win.

True but when the Mercs have problems, then the resulting race becomes fantastic stuff.

Interesting that Nico referred to the "soccer" world championship - I thought the US was the only country that did that.

You obviously missed the first half of the season.  This season has been awesome, Mercedes flexing some muscle with their new, innovative engine as well as a good chassis, two top drivers battling and great racing on the tracks from all the teams.  Reflecting back to the last four years where it was Red Bull year in and year out, I like this season a lot.

Also, the Williams and Sahara teams doing well.  For those people that didn't go to the race, I'd say you lost out.  I know that the track pretty well sucks since it was shortened, but it still looked like it would be a good time.  Especially if you could get seats in the top of the main grandstands.

No I really didnt. I may have a different idea of what is interesting than you do but I watched the races. This is not even in the top 50 seasons of Formula One as far as good interesting races goes..

I have enjoyed F1 immensely this year. The Red Bull show got boring and the Mercedes show will too if it lasts more than this year. Ferrari and Renault will not let that happen though.

Hamilton looks like a bigger douchebag than Justin Bieber.

Not a bigger douchebag than bieber, but about as bad as Kaepernick

is it the flat brim hat that's throwing you guys off?
is it the "hip hop" vibe?
too brown?

Not his personality mind you, but his looks. Those huge diamond earstuds, and the douchebeard.

guess i should have kept scrolling for the explanation of the hate

is f1 the only sport where the athletes don't groom themselves & dress fancy / splash their cash?

has to wear shades so your hate & his rings don't blind him

Adolf Oliver Nipples: The announcers refuse to acknowledge that Bernie's outrageous track fees and attendant high ticket prices explain the empty stands. They simply don't know why people don;t want to come to the race!

except the did comment on the empty stands and the high prices
but rage on

JayCab: Massa gets flipped over... that's twice in a row he's been taken out at the start. Terrible luck.

fark Massa.

He's all over the media preaching about how Magnussen should learn not to try to overtake up to the first corner.
