I probably wouldn't have much faith in an airline that won't alter their flight path to avoid areas of active conflict.

The altitude they were at was supposedly out of the conflict zone because it was thought that only governments had the kinds of resources necessary to bring down aircraft that high, and the separatists weren't in that category. Looks like that thinking is going to have to be revised.

To be fair, this particular active conflict is between two armies which are neither using nor need to use their air assets. Malaysia Air didn't expect them to be using AA weapons at all, much less using AA weapons at targets traveling at commercial cruising speed and altitude.


/helicopters don't count as air assets, per Civ4, Civ5 and the US military
//even if they did, they generally don't operate above 30,000 feet
