Or perhaps put the vest on a mannequin, a watermelon, a turkey, or really anything other than himself.

Plus, don't bullet proof vests lose their effectiveness after they've taken a bullet?

Depends on the round, trauma plate composition if it has one, and the location of following shots... but for the most part, yes. A good vest can soak a hell of a lot of .22 shots, but the wearer would feel like he was caught in a rockslide shortly after trying.

Whenever I see one of these stories this is always teh question I have.  Are people really that stupid that they think they have to test a bulletproof on a human body?

The next question I have is, was it a commercial vest or some homemade hack job they were testing?

Before anyone asks:

1. Homicide is not murder (the definition is the "killing of a human being by another human being")
2. You cannot consent to be killed (so if the buddy's defense is "he said it was okay" he is in for a biiiig surprise), or in most cases, waive liability for accidental death
3. The shooter is likely on the hook for voluntary manslaughter at the very least. (Unlawful killing of another with malice [in this case, acting with wanton or reckless disregard for human life])

You know how we always say "Stupidity should be painful"? Yeah, this is what it ought to be like.

TFA only mentions three, but logic dictates there must have been a fourth person present:  The shooter, the shootee, the camera operator, and somebody to hold the beer.

So the failure was in step 1.

C'mon everyone, back to the drawing board.

In all seriousness, I don't see why they arrested the guy who shot him. It's not exactly murder when someone helps you set up a video camera and asks you to shoot them. Shouldn't even be manslaughter. Littering maybe, but he didn't just leave the body, he drove him to the hospital. Jail won't do anything to prevent this from happening again.

Three men gathered in a Baltimore row home basement in the early morning hours of July 16 and thought it'd be a cool idea to "film a stunt in which they planned to test a bulletproof vest," according to The Baltimore Sun. Just before 4 a.m. on Wednesday, 28-year-old Darnell Mitchell donned the bulletproof vest. Mitchell's friend, 30-year-old Mark Ramiro, aimed his .22 caliber handgun at Mitchell while a third friend videotaped the stunt, which ended up going horribly wrong.

As Mitchell waited for the impact, he looked into the video camera and egged his friendly shooter on by saying "deuce deuce in the chest." Ramiro fired the gun. He struck Mitchell, but totally missed the bulletproof vest his friend was wearing. Ramiro's bullet struck Mitchell above the vest.

The home video ended with Ramiro dropping his gun and both friends rushing to assist their unsuspecting victim. The two friends drove Mitchell to the nearby University of Maryland Medical Center's Shock Trauma unit. But Mitchell died within minutes of arriving at the hospital, according to police.

It's not a crime. At least, not a murder crime. The police instead charged him with first AND second degree murder. WTF. One death, one charge, only this wasn't an intentional death so it shouldn't be murder at all. Manslaughter, MAYBE, but again it's not like they're gonna do it again.

At the same time, this is exactly what I assume Baltimore is like in every basement.

First and second degree murder?  Really?   All involved are idiots, of course (including the police), but it's not murder.  I find it hard to take the criminal justice system in this country seriously anymore.

It's not a justice system. They tie her ass up outside with a blindfold on so she can't see what they're doing in there.

It's a legal system. Just a bunch of lawyers growing up into law makers and passing laws to help their kids do the same.

First degree murder is insane and scary, and second degree murder isn't much better. So they'll get him to plead down to manslaughter, toss him in a for profit prison, and make a hefty profit this year by the savings on a jury trial. Justice doesn't play into anything here.

This reminds me. I remember as a kid when "shatterproof" (i.e. plastic) jars became the norm for things like peanut butter, and the advertising and packaging would boast that the product was now in a shatterproof container.

As kids, my cousin and I thought it would be cool to test. So, we got a nice, big, full jar of peanut butter and dropped it on the floor. True to the advertising, the jar didn't shatter. Nevermind that it still split open, and peanut butter still splattered over nearly every surface in the kitchen.
