He's been calling a ceasefire for at least two months.

Only, his idea of a ceasefire is when the Ukrainian military doesn't shoot at the rebels, while the rebels re-arm with armaments and "volunteers" from Russia and continue shooting at the Ukrainian military. That's what happened when the last ceasefire was announced by Ukraine's Poroshenko. Separatists violated that "ceasefire" 120 times.

Looks like someone just figured out they are losing and wants to preserve the status quo.

Fun Fact:  the strict translation of "ceasefire" in Russian is "stop hitting yourself."

That's nuts.  Obozo would just blow this opportunity.

I'll let esteemed Fox News Security Expert KT McFarland sum up the situation:

The fact is Obama seemed headed for an attack on Syria that no one wanted and few thought would succeed.  Most thought it would only end in disaster, either with the U.S. drawn into an attack/retaliation cycle of escalation that could go on for years and spread into a regional war, or result in the overthrow of President Assad by an Al Qaeda affiliated rebels.
While the Russians may have toyed with the idea of letting American get bogged down in yet another losing Middle East war, they didn't want to risk a war that might pull them in, or lose control of the Assad government to radical Sunni jihadists.
So Putin stepped in and threw Obama a lifeline.
 [...]
The Washington press corps will no doubt believe him, as usual, and lavish their usual praise.

But the world knows that Vladimir Putin is the one who really deserves that Nobel Peace Prize.

Obama needs to be kissing Putin's firm, well-toned butt.  This Global Chessmaster is the only one we can trust.  Not the liar in chief.

I'll let Rush Limbaugh, well-respected analyst of world affairs and Dominican boy enthusiast lay it all out:

"Vladimir Putin ought to be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize, Putin ought to be addressing the American people tonight on TV, not Obama."
"Putin, again, has beaten Obama. There's no two ways about that, Putin comes out the big winner."

It was just surreal around that time seeing Republicans praising the President of Russia -- of  Russia!-- over the President of the United States.

but even at the time, a serious analysis of the situation should have shown anyone that Putin had made a serious mistake, and whatever short-term gain he got by taking Crimea is far outweighed by the long-term mess he has gotten Russia into.

"While his stance as a defender of traditional values has drawn the mockery of Western media and cultural elites, Putin is not wrong in saying that he can speak for much of mankind."  -Pat Buchanan

GRABOVO, Ukraine - Incongruously, given that the plane fell from more than 30,000 feet, many of the bodies strewn about in the smoldering wreckage of Malaysia Airlines Flight 17 were largely intact. A woman in a black sweater lay on her back, blood streaming from her face, her left arm raised as if signaling someone. Another victim, naked except for a black bra, lay on the field, her gray hair mixing with the green grass, one leg broken and her body torn.

"There was a howling noise and everything started to rattle. Then objects started falling out of the sky," the 65-year-old pensioner said in front of her grey-brick home.
"And then I heard a roar and she landed in the kitchen, the roof was broken," she said, showing the gaping hole made by the body when it came through the ceiling of the kitchen in an extension to the house.
The dead woman's naked body was still lying inside the house, next to a bed.

I really enjoy listening to Putin go on about how Ukraine shouldn't use force against separatists within their borders. Remember, that one time, when he supported popular referendums in Chechnya, and when they voted for independence, he let them go peacefully into independence? Oh, right, no, he used force against separatists within his borders. HUGE amounts of force. Ah, hypocrisy.

Kittypie070: stonelotus: kind of makes you wonder why so many naked people were on that plane.

Aerodynamic forces and depressurization airflow.

Honestly, don't be dumb.

It's one reason they tell you not to wear slip-on shoes when you fly, even though it makes going through security easier. Most plane crashes are actually survivable by most passengers, but often times either due to depressurization or the force of an impact, people's shoes fly off. If you survive a crash, you're going to probably have to climb over some sharp metal and possibly fire, and that's not much fun if you're barefoot.

THE MORE YOU KNOW~*

"We've got to protect against overreaction. Vengeance isn't the name of the game." -- Ronald Reagan

He was being criticized at the time for not doing enough and for looking weak. And that was regarding a flight that originated from US soil, unlike the crash in Ukraine. A sober reminder of a time when Republicans weren't all pants-on-head retarded @ssholes like every one of them is now.

stonelotus: Rapmaster2000: "While his stance as a defender of traditional values has drawn the mockery of Western media and cultural elites, Putin is not wrong in saying that he can speak for much of mankind."  -Pat Buchanan

Great work, Pat.  I get it that you hate Obozo, but praising what was clearly a bad man was always going to end badly for you.

kind of makes you wonder why so many naked people were on that plane.

Makes me wonder if the woman has a bed in her kitchen, or if she dragged the victim into another room so she could finish the borscht.

I've known this for a while, but here's one article making the same recommendation:

http://www.travelersguide360.com/index.php/how-to-survive-an-airplan e- crash-3-17241/

"One unfortunate by-product of today's stepped up airport security measures is that more and more passengers are choosing to wear easily removable, slip-on shoes, sandals, flip flops and other flimsy, open toed shoes on flights, perhaps exchanging safety for convenience. In event of a crash, your shoes may be the most important item of clothing that you are wearing. Wear sturdy shoes with leather soles. Even sneakers that are made with synthetic fabrics may not fare well when you are fleeing from a burning aircraft as synthetics tend to melt and adhere to the wearer's skin. High heeled shoes should also not be worn while flying. Should you find yourself on a stricken jet coming in for a hard landing in Albuquerque, you'll wish you'd opted for the hiking boots instead of the stilettos."

Well, more practicable than practical, as it wouldn't do you any good, ever.

The past decade has been the best in the country's aviation history with 153 fatalities. That's two deaths for every 100 million passengers on commercial flights, according to an Associated Press analysis of government accident data.

No, the reality is that today's Republican can see about as far ahead as a lab rat. Putin could have easily left things the way they were with Crimea -- nobody was going to do shiat about that, and he could have walked away with an easy victory for the Motherland. Instead, he went all Bush circa 2003 and let his ego and bravado get the best of him. He's now in a situation where his proxy army in eastern Ukraine has shot down an airliner using (probably) Russian equipment, the rebel leader in charge of that area has no resigned, and the Russian economy, which was already slowing anyway, is now at risk of entering a recession, and that's not even taking into account the impending fallout from murdering 298 civilians, most of them European. Putin is riding a wave of nationalism right now, but we'll see how long that lasts when their economy goes to shiat and their trade relationships with Europe are permanently damaged.

You are, I confess, correct. The apples are that it's demonstrable that many people who die in auto accidents (not a year in the past 60 with fewer than 30,000 in the US) perish from head injuries that could have been non-fatal with the protection of a helmet. The oranges are either the lack of anyone who died in a plane crash (less than 0.05% the number in auto crashes) because they were barefoot, or because they didn't pray before boarding. I forget which.

He got that popular by feeding them a fantasy that the rebels are defending the Russian people against neo-Nazis and neo-fascists in Kyiv.

Will not be changed. Russians, in mass, don't particularly want that "Novorossia" bull, because everyone understands that Russia will have to pay for it, and nobody wants to pay. Russians, in mass, want Ukraine "punished" and be shown "who's boss" - and you can't say Ukraine isn't farking punished. Beyond any reasonable measure.

Putin isn't winning anything for Russia, but he isn't losing anything for himself.

RexTalionis: Right wing ultranationalists are already calling Putin a coward for failing to send a military intervention into Ukraine to secure Eastern Ukraine.

They may call him anything, but their support is assured absolutely and unconditionally.

Pardon the rudeness Grahor, it's nothing personal but I gotta be up front.

I was wondering when you'd show up anyway.

In any case, I've pretty much got corks the size of starships stuck in my ears and I'm just not gonna believe anything.

Short version: Kitty says LALALALAAAAAA.

Other than the politics, I bet you'd be a fine person to crack a beer with.

Four fronts if you count the vampires.

Nah, those are all in Mexico.....

The problem is that a night of drinking of Grahor would just end up with him drunkingly mumbling how large and flavorful Putin's cock is.  For hours on end.

Still don't understand why Russia wants to cut itself off from the rest of the modern world instead of join us, and take over territory instead. Of course, the USSR splits less than a few decades ago, but you'd think some high ranking people would want to integrate with the rest of the world, especially for trading purposes.

Yeah, I know I have no idea what I'm talking about. Still, I wonder how things would go if a generation was mainly in charge before they became old and jaded due to seeing the world for decades.

RexTalionis: He's been calling a ceasefire for at least two months.

Yeah, everyone except the Ukrainian government has been calling for a ceasefire for ages.

Can't blame the Ukrainian government though. If there's a ceasefire, it might be indefinete. And then, congrats, eastern Ukraine is now an independent state (though probably not recognised by anyone).

Pichu0102: Still don't understand why Russia wants to cut itself off from the rest of the modern world instead of join us

They've tried, after the fall of the USSR. The result was terrifying powerty, demolition of law and society, 10% to 15% of population loss in 10 years, small number of western businessmen willing to do business in Russia (and large number of local criminals) robbing the people blind, western advisers offering stupid and destructive, in the short and in the long run, advice, and the rest of the world saying "well, it's all your own fault. If you weren't so stupid and backward, you wouldn't be that deep in shiat. So don't look at me now. It's your own job to dig yourself out."

And it wasn't exactly wrong: it WAS their fault, since they had no idea how to live in the non-Soviet world and weren't capable to learn fast enough. But now they don't see any value in "joining you". They know that they are alone and forever will be, they have no desire in "joining" anyone, and they dig themselves out as they know how. Admittedly, they do it shiatty, but it's the only way they know.

Pichu0102: and take over territory instead.

Please understand, it's not about territory. It's about emotions. It's about being, as a country, a bully. In their mind you can be either a bully and take what you want and do what you want (point in case: USA) or bullied, and they are fed up with being bullied. So they are being a bully.

Specifics are unimportant. Territory, Novorossia, they don't give a damn. It's about power, about being a bully. They do whatever they want, look at clucking, powerless neighbors and the world and they feel empowered.

Pichu0102: Of course, the USSR splits less than a few decades ago, but you'd think some high ranking people would want to integrate with the rest of the world, especially for trading purposes.

Why would high ranking people want to "trade"? They have already everything they want! They are not interested in making more money, they want power. Power over lives and deaths. Power to do what they want. Have you seen "House of Cards"? The main character there says, with contempt, "he exchanged power for mere money". That's how Russians see it.

Ukrainian public is dead set against ceasefire and if Ukrainian government would try it, it may jolly well fall. Again.

Sigh. Man, fark this world. So because of underhanded businessmen, criminals, sociopaths obsessed with power and waving their metaphorical dick around, the grand majority of people around the world, not just Russians, who just want to live a peaceful, simple life are screwed over by the big few people more than willing to take advantage of the average person's goodwill, is that about right?

I wish we had finally figured out some kind of roadmap to a better world to live in in my generation, but I guess that's not happening, and we're leaving behind a shiatty example for the next generation. I know one day a generation will finally come along and fix what we, our past, and our future generations wrought, but until then, we're all at each other's throats over the stupidest shiat and useless pride.

This awfulness has done the one thing that he didn't want. It's given the west a seat at the table. The US Republicans have been screaming that Obama should be doing something in Ukraine. Well, the US has never dictated terms in that part of the world, even when Europe was garrisoned during the Cold War. You have no stakes in that game.

However, murdering 300 Europeans changes things. You do something like that and people will look for you. In fact, they won't stop.

Now, as we learned when the USSR shot down the Japanese airliner KAL007 and the US missile ship Vincennes shot down an Iranian airliner, when the big powers do something wrong, it counts for less. Well, Russia's a lot less powerful these days and so perhaps a fundamental point of criminal justice will not be lost: that he who knowingly furnishes the apparatus of a crime is considered an accessory to a crime.

So, who decided to order the placement of missile batteries in Eastern Ukraine? A private with a truck driver's licence is not the one who made that decision.

You also have to understand that the Russians as a people have been getting farked over hard since the Mongol invasions.  They have always been leery of outsiders and have turned paranoia into an art form.  While I certainly don't want to apologize for Russian adventurism in Eastern Europe, they see the expansion of NATO into Eastern Europe and the American missile shield as direct actionable threats to their existence.  It's hard to convince them otherwise, especially when you have neocons like McCain popping up every ten minutes threatening to nuke them.

Yep, pretty much. And it's not unique; if you'll check the history, similar things happened, in the past, every generation or two. :)

Well, humans are emotional beasts, with deep tribal roots and traditions. Our society and mores evolve, but slowly. I don't think it's gonna change any time soon. We just have to keep in mind that and move appropriately.

I think the fundamental point of criminal justice which will not be lost will be different: not everyone is equal before the law, so you better be a big mean mother...er, and then you'll be just peachy.

Meaningless terms, Dear..  Sorry..

"Explosive Decompression" and..well..*explosions* be better answers..

First re-distributes anything loose and movable..clothes fit this category..  Second flash burns anything flammable..again, like clothes..  The reports mention bodies being naked..but were those bodies burned..?  No mention, either or..
