"Now, Therefore, I, Terry E Branstad, as Governor of the State of Iowa, do hereby invite all Iowans who choose to join in the thoughtful prayer and humble repentance according to II Chronicles 7:14 in favor of our state and nation to come together on July 14, 2014."

Has Terry Branstad never heard of the Establishment Clause? You know, the very first farking part of the First Amendment?

Douchey, attention-whorey move to be sure, but since he hasn't commanded anyone to do it or threatened to arrest anyone who doesn't, he's paying sufficient lip-service to separation of church and state.

That said, can you imagine the outcry if he issued a call to prayer in the name of the All-Merciful Allah?

Iowa doesn't even touch Kansas. The derpbola has gone aerosol.

2 Chronicles has to do with events that happened in the reign of ancient Hebrew kings like David and Solomon.

They dont have any relevance to Iowa in 2014.

Prayer is insulting to God.  He is an omnipotent deity, so mouthing your fondest hopes and dreams out loud to a crowd is just repeating what He already knows.

Is short, public prayer is for attention whores that studiously avoid their Matthew 6:6.

I'm sure Governor Branstad has repented for making sure his drunk son only got a slap on the wrist for killing two people in 1991.  Praise Jeebus

Sometimes I wish the "separation clause" meant we could draw and quarter these panderers and loons.

Just sometimes.

Diogenes: Sometimes I wish the "separation clause" meant we could draw and quarter these panderers and loons.

Just sometimes.

If he needs daily redemption, you have to wonder just what the hell kind of sinning he's doing on a daily basis.  I have a hard time breaking more than a few commandments a day.  But then I am getting old.

Are we to go on the real rules, or the rules as people like him see them?  I'm never clear on that.

NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President of the United States of America, by virtue of the authority vested in me by the Constitution and the laws of the United States, do hereby proclaim May 1, 2014, as a National Day of Prayer. I invite the citizens of our Nation to give thanks, in accordance with their own faiths and consciences, for our many freedoms and blessings, and I join all people of faith in asking for God's continued guidance, mercy, and protection as we seek a more just world.

I suppose this proclamation could be argued to be more inclusive, but honestly, I wish they all would give it a rest...

Yeah, that just says "Congress shall make no laws." He's not a member of Congress, so praise God and pass the ammunition, right?
He may not have heard of the 14th Amendment and incorporation, however...
But I suggest that Matthew 6:5 may be a better prayer for him to use.

A governor's proclamations may not be legally binding, but one like Branstad's sends a clear message: atheists - and even non-Christians - are not favored by his administration.

That's how I felt when Branstad signed that Muslim Recognition proclamation and hosted Muslim Day at the capitol.  It made me feel so unfavored and excluded.

Considering there doesn't seem to be anything merciful about Allah, you're right, it would be a bit ridiculous.

We Iowans would be better off if we'd just kept Robert D. Ray on as Governor, cloning him as necessary to keep things going.

/not that Gov. Ray would have had anything to do with such a scheme
//Ray and Branstad have 1 thing in common: both are Republicans

Braindead is just downright pandering now. I never liked the douchenozzle or his killer kid or his porn stache but at least 1980s Terry would never have wallowed in the pig trough that is religious fundamentalism.

bad terry. go pray for the ambulance drivers to drive faster next time so those old folks won't die while your kid got to ride a helicopter.

bad bad terry

The main reason why scum like Branstad and Steve King keep getting elected is because the Iowa Democratic Party is a short bus full of lamers and fails, who refuse to promote their candidates in order to at least get those names out there.

I mean, I live in Iowa and even I don't know just who in the farkkity-fark the Democratic challenger is running against Branstad. The IDP is really the GOP's best friend in this state!

Not a fan of Branstache, but he's just pandering here. Not violating any laws. Plenty of other things to dislike about the guy.

I know, but it isn't surprising. Branstad, Ernst, and King are all getting millions from the Kochs, Palin, and other national organizations. How much out-of-state money do you think is flowing to Iowa Democrats?

Technically the establishment clause only applies to the US congress.

I'm pretty sure it was unanimously incorporated against the states in Everson v. Board of Education back in 1947. That said, as clkeagle noted, he phrased it artfully like a choice, so I can't really argue he violated the letter of the law even if I think he took a smelly shiat on the spirit of the law.

Exactly. He isn't shredding the Constitution like our secret-muslin-atheist-empty-suited-tyrannical-kitten-punching presiden t... He's carefully folding it into a paper airplane and throwing it in a very specific direction.
