In the libertarian fantasy world, the courts are where all disputes are handled. So this would make sense to them.

That's when the courts don't go their way.

What standing would the US have to bring such a lawsuit? The Malaysians and the Dutch, yes. But not the US. Even the one US Citizen was also Dutch.

I found out yesterday that my editor was part of the team that provided legal counsel for the victims of the Korean flight that the USSR shot down in 83. But they sued the airline for damages, not the Ruskies.

Sen. Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) is calling for a wrongful death lawsuit against Russian assets on Friday after a commercial airline crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border.

I can see families and the airline doing so, but suing rebels and raggedy ass militias isn't exactly a winning proposition...

The US interest in the matter? Other than assisting any Americans who might join the suit, there is no purvieling US interest, so why get involved?

BETTER IDEA: Load up all our B-52s with American lawyers. Bomb Russia with them until they're knee-deep in lawyers. WIN-WIN.

Meh, that's your issue with the whole thing?

Personally, I want to know what's sop complicated about launching a rocket. I'd also like to know how many got lost when the Soviet Union broke up, how many ended up in the Ukraine, stuff like that. I mean, they have the Russians actually cheering about this on the radio, but my point is that just because it's one of these missiles, I'm not going to just assume that it could only be Russia, since they lost so much shiat when the Iron Curtain fell.

"It appears the BUK missile system is so complicated that it would need backup from a nation-state like Russia," Kirk said.

But yeah, what is so farking complicated? Does the thing cook breakfast for you first? Or is it just that old?

Air pollution is my favorite anti-libertarian issue.  In Ayn Rand Land, there would be no pollution controls on factories or vehicles or tractors or whatever.  So, if you get sick from all the crap in the air, you are apparently supposed to sue every single car owner within 50 miles for the .00000000000000000000001% of the problem their particular polluting vehicle caused.  This is, of course, completely absurd on it's face.

Stupid idea.
Suppose, for a moment, it goes through.
How many lawsuits is the US now open to?  We supply damn near the whole world with weapons.

Hitting an object moving at speed in a three dimensional space with another object moving at speed in a three dimensional space from 20 miles away is very very complicated even with computers

How would that even work? Who would you sue in Russia? The entire governemnt...the company that created the SAM system? People have also thrown out suing Malaysian airlines...how? What did they do wrong? I could only see them being in the wrong if they were explicitly told to avoid Ukraine and did not but that does not seem to be the case.

Dunno what you mean by "good luck with that", since the United States did get sued, and did pay...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655#Aftermath
In February 1996, the United States agreed to pay Iran US$131.8 million in settlement to discontinue a case brought by Iran in 1989 against the U.S. in the International Court of Justice relating to this incident, together with other earlier claims before the Iran-United States Claims Tribunal. US$61.8 million of the claim was in compensation for the 248 Iranians killed in the shoot-down: $300,000 per wage-earning victim and $150,000 per non-wage-earner. In total, 290 civilians on board were killed, 38 being non-Iranians and 66 being children.

Oh your smrt : )

Um maybe the fact there is by the end of the war not gonna be any lining person to sue could make the situation different and I doubt you would like the US to take responsibility for every act committed with ordnance made in this country or is that your argument?

I hope that image is spreading around. I want grandmas forwarding it to people before they come to the realization that it means exactly the opposite of what they think it does.
