All it will tell is that the pilot's last words were "OH SHI..."

I'm sure it's all perfectly above-board.
There won't be any reason to be suspicious when the all the voices on the cockpit voice-recorder have Muscovite accents. I'm sure that is quite among Malaysian airline pilots.

Well, Russia has more sophisticated data analysis available to them than Ukraine, so they're probably more qualified to analyze the black box.

The rebels have no air power so the argument that the Ukraine govt shot down this plane has no merit in reality but the conflict started by Putin saying he needed to step in and protect Russian citizens living in the Ukraine that were being threatened with "ethnic violence" when the only ones being threatened were the politicians who were draining the country dry.

It's deju vu all over again. The Russians did this before, with KAL 007. They shot down the Korean Air plane, took the black box.

After a long time, one of the dead passenger's family members went to Moscow and got the black box from some Russian-named Prime Minister -- Gromecko (don't speak Klingon, sorry).

The Russians can't read Boeing. It's the first 777 to crash. If the pilots were speaking Malay, the Russian's might need a friendly translators.

Of course, the plane carrying the black box, may be shot down by trigger happy, vodak inspired Russians.

2014-07-18 10:03:20 AM
This is all just a big cover up by Boeing who knows there is a problem with the chemtrail tanks on the 777 which causes them to overheat and explode.

Yep. They claimed credit when they thought it was a Ukrainian military aircraft and went into denial mode attempting to delete all evidence of claiming credit when they learned it was an airliner.

True, but they are just as apt to lie about the findings.

/cause of crash: pilot error caused by an exploding fuel tank when they flew into the side of a weather balloon.
/our news channels will call bullshiat, but Russians don't get our news channels.

This will end well...

2014-07-18 10:05:13 AM
I heard on the way to work this morning that the rebels and Russia will have broken international law if this turns out to be true, as the black box is only allowed to be handled by the established government of the nation in which the plane crashed. And that the reason for said law is to help prevent a coverup.

Any Farkyers able to weigh in on that?

I doubt the black box will help much, unless its a great mystery why they were flying over that particular spot.

ATC should have radar tracks of what came from where, yes?  It's more a matter of who gave the order to fire - separatists, Russians, or separatists working with Russian minders.

Russians love conspiracy theories though, so no matter what the evidence points to, nobody there will believe it.

What's the black box gonna tell us in this situation? It's not like there's some grand mystery as to why the plane went down. It's not entirely clear who did it, but the black box wouldn't tell us that.

It's not like the pilots going to say "Oh hey there's a missile coming right for us, and it was fired from the Ukranian/Russian side of the border!"

2014-07-18 10:10:02 AM
Also, sounds like Russia/rebels only got one of the black boxes. The other one sounds like it might have been secured by westerners.

Black boxes aren't just cockpit recordings. They have a loop of telemetry and sensor data on the storage as well. Pretty much every gauge, sensor, and transmission that the plane has is on that data.

Quoting the Convention on International Civil Aviation:

Article 26 Investigation of accidents
In the event of an accident to an aircraft of a contracting State occurring in the territory of another contracting State, and involving death or serious injury, or indicating serious technical defect in the aircraft or air navigation facilities, the State in which the accident occurs will institute an inquiry into the circumstances of the accident, in accordance, so far as its laws permit, with the procedure which may be recommended by the International Civil Aviation Organization. The State in which the aircraft is registered shall be given the opportunity to appoint observers to be present at the inquiry and the State holding the inquiry shall communicate the report and findings in the matter to that State.

This says Ukraine has a duty to try to find out what happened. Because the treaty is designed to allocate responsibility among cooperating countries, it doesn't come right out and say "taking black boxes is illegal and any country that does so has to sit in the back row at the next UN General Assembly meeting."

I've heard there are conflicting reports about the black box(es) being removed too. Apparently at one point the rebels said they had retrieved "10 of 12 recording devices" to which everyone else said "Um, there are, at most, two". I think one of two (or both) things might be going on: 1) the rebels don't have a farking clue what the "black box" is (AFAIK it's not black, for starters) and can't read the English "Flight Recorder" painted on the side, and/or 2) they did recover them and whichever Russian official they contacted said, "Put them back, you farksticks, there won't be anything on there that can implicate you, but taking them makes you look more guilty". (I'm picturing something like a scene from Burn After Reading).

Malaysia has reported that they got no "mayday" call (for whatever that's worth, given Malaysia's track record on this kind of thing).

Considering that both sides have confirmed it was a commercial airline flight that was shot down, I doubt that trying to hide the true identity of the aircraft is the reason.

However, the collision-avoidance system data and GPS data will be on there, and might give a clue what direction the missile came from. I have little doubt THAT is why the Russians were so keen to get their hands on the recorder, to erase any evidence pointing to a missile launch from Russian territory or from the rebel-held military base in Donetsk

My money is on it being the rebels, as they are the only faction here that doesn't have to worry about the consequences of blowing up the wrong target.

The plane's black box will tell us the airspeed, altitude, heading and location of the plane.  Those factors determine what types of missiles could be used to shoot the plane down as well as the possible positions from which the missile could be fired.

I meant to add to above post: one of the conflicting stories is that some rebels are saying they haven't found the black boxes at all, as they hastily kicked some ash and debris onto an orange box labelled "Flight Recorder DO NOT OPEN".
