Weird Al trifecta in play.

2014-07-18 12:00:44 PM
Its Weird Al week for sure.  Reminds me of the insanity he pulled when he hosted MuchMusic for a day during the year.

Never liked Yankovic.  Never saw any humor in any of his work.

Never liked Muta's posting. Never saw any point in any of the posts.

I'd love to see him parody Madonna's Give Me All Your Luvin' substituting 'iguana' for 'Madonna'

If we can just get Pharrel Williams to perform Tacky, I'd have closure.

/love Weird Al

Then I guess this a perfect thread for you to comment in. Thanks for the information.

\Hey look, it's "that guy"

Love Weird Al,  and his music videos are usually impressive.

But I was more impressed at the work the camera crew did to make sure that came off in one smooth take.

Sorry, but no. That was live, because he wasn't hitting the notes perfectly. A lot of that song is at the upper end of Al's vocal range, and you could hear some flats and cracks as he tried hitting it.

Thanks for playing though; Don Pardo, tell him what he's won...

Idk he climbs 2 flights of stairs while singing continuously and never sounded out of breath,

What's different about this album, compared to the others? I've never seen this level of promotion coming from him.

This quite an impressive run this time around.

Kazahmish: Where was Jim West?

Not necessary for the track.  Seldom is he used on tracks that don't have guitars, banjos, or other stringed instruments that Steve Jay can play.

Then again, I keep watching the official 'Tacky' music video and want to see a Jimmy Hart impersonator.

2014-07-18 03:41:25 PM
This is the first time I'm hearing it, and I'm very disappointed.  I through he was going to do "Crappy".

This is his final album under his contract.  After this one he will be free to do anything he wants.  I expect he is doing a big push to get his brand back in the spotlight as much as anything.

Now that he can start doing singles, his stuff can be much faster to market and relevant to songs while they are still getting play.  He is very happy to not be stuck with 30 year-old business practices anymore.

His mouth movements don't match the audio.  It wouldn't be hard for him to sing it once through their theater PA to record prior to the show and then they play it back for the long tracking shot.  Watch the next video where he sings the Conan theme - night/day difference between how genuine the performance looks and sounds compared to this video.

No, the mouth movements match up with the audio on the same level as Conan giving the intro. At least IMO. Also, there's noticeable level changes in the mic when it's much further away from his mouth at the appropriate times and 'spits' on the hard consonants when it's right next to his mouth. Synching up precise physical movements like that to a pre-recorded bit are much harder and more noticeable when they're off.

His label has apparently paid off all of Salon.com.  They've been pushing his album and every video for over a week.

Also note the change in ambient sound coming from his mic when he reaches the audience.

The only bad thing about Weird Al was that he gave Victoria Jackson a job on UHF, thus empowering her to become the wacko she is today.

I think Victoria Jackson's complete mental breakdown may be Al's fault.

I agree you could tell he wasn't hitting well at certain spots and you could hear breathing too. It was live.

Seems legit to me.

Lip sync, but audio could have been a legit take from rehearsal.

I guess we'll agree to disagree on this one - at 2:29 he high fives an audience member and I hear the next consonant sound before he even gets the mic back up to his mouth and there's no fade/doppler type effect on the sound.  I thought perhaps there was some lag in the encoding or something but at the end I see the drummer's sticking on the hi hats matches the audio perfectly so it shoots that theory to hell.

Before someone posts the 'Peter Griffin OMG who the hell cares' jpeg, I'll go listen to Word Crimes a few more times...

Its difficult, but an experienced cameraman with a steadycam would have practiced that move quite a bit.  Plus, they have at least one handler behind them.  Still impressive.

THIS...

It's still pretty impressive he can pull it off and not sound winded, but the camera operator and the grips were the truly impressive, especially taking the stairs backwards. I've done some mobile camera work, and even forward is a biatch, but that was smooth and perfect.

It does help that they have the 'no standing'zone already established also.

Idk, I can climb stairs and sing without losing my breath, but I can't sing as well as Al, nor I would be surprised if he's in better shape than I.

He had a solo gig in northern CA. Slack key guitar.

Nope, if he had lip synced it, the AutoTune would still be present. They used it in the recording to give him the electronic sound of today's music, but anyone with functioning ears could tell from the start that it was not the original recording.

Lots of practice, a steadicam, and good grip work. It's not the 'not eating it' part as much as the 'smooth flow' part. Even with my eye plastered to a viewfinder, I could walk around concentrating on what I saw with the other eye, but going up stairs wouldn't have been that smooth.

Funny,, Weird Al is Weird Al,  Always good for a quick laugh,

His band mates though are actually pretty talented. Too bad they use most of their talent to play covers.

Yeah, because there are more paying gigs for band members than singers.

/I know several 'musicians' who would love to play for Al, because they can't get paying gigs.
//And they don't like his music, at least his band enjoys his stuff.

He's in fantastic shape. Granted, this was twenty years ago but in concert, he'd sing Like a Surgeon with a leg (very near the knee) behind his own head, then lower himself to the ground one legged, backwards, still singing.

/  He also hopped onto the lap of the girl next to me to sing part of One More Minute. She said later that he'd had a bony ass.
