The latter portion of the article is perhaps the more telling portion of the show.

The most realistic version of events is that the rebels thought they were aiming a ground-to-air missile at a Ukrainian transport plane. The government is using such planes to drop supplies to servicemen surrounded in a rebel-held area not far from where Flight MH17 crashed.

Even if new information surfaces absolving the trigger-happy Strelkov and his men, there is no denying the fact that the conflict in eastern Ukraine is their doing. Strelkov's top cadre includes military re-enactment enthusiasts like himself who have fought in numerous local conflicts just because they like it. Strelkov's account is full of tales of the rebels' clashes with the inept, bumbling Ukrainian troops: the barely trained army, the National Guard made up of recent street-revolution activists, patriotic volunteers with little fighting experience. The area is full of angry, badly trained people and serious military hardware. The rebels recently seized the Buk ground-to-air missiles, capable of shooting down planes at high altitude, from a Ukrainian base, according to Russian state news agency Itar-Tass.

Both sides have more weapons than they know how to use. Ukraine never expected to fight a war at all, especially not with Russian nationalist fighters, apparently backed and armed by Russia. It was started by these fighters and by local insurgents unhappy about the Ukrainian nationalist government in Kiev. It is a battle of amateurs and semiprofessionals - an emotional, dirty, ad-hoc war and a major accident waiting to happen.

And it's something we might want to pay attention to. Because there are just enough militia nutters in this country who keep mouthing exactly the same sorts of rhetoric here.

This is how Russia supplies them.  Release a story in Russian media that the rebels seized whatever it is Russia just gave them so they can say "Nope, we didn't give it to them.  Didn't you see the story we ran saying they seized it from Ukraine?  Oh sure the Ukraine government says there wasn't a base there and that all 10 of these that they posses are present and accounted for, but those guys are liars."

Well, if you're going to murder civilians in a high-profile manner, there's nothing quite like shooting down a regularly-scheduled flight at high altitude full of physicians from the World Health Organization headed to an international AID conference.

Better yet, fire it from an area under your control, and use a weapon that the government does not have in your area. That's guaranteed to garner sympathy for your cause and for the country arming your insurgency.

/Will this accelerate the collapse of Russia's economy in any appreciable way?

I know there can be accidents, but those come from careless owners. And don't get me started about criminals using SAMs for their illegal ends. But my rights as a responsible SAM owner trump others' lives."

Intel agencies are surely spending the night poring over what they have, where things were yesterday and where they are now. Will be interesting if the crew of the Buk didn't leave the launcher behind when they headed back into Russia. Otherwise Spetnaz is gonna have to find some holes in which to bury inconvenient travelers.

As for Europe, this will remove any hesitation on further sanctions. The public pressure will see to that. Don't expect from the UN with Russia having a veto and warmer relations with China.

Meanwhile Kyiv has free reign to do what it wants and needs while Putin eats his tie ala Sakaashvili. More innocents will die, but the guilt will still be on the separatists. They dun goofed. With Russian help, natch. Putin wanted to poison the well and unleashed hell. The whirlwind he reaps will be of his own making.

"Pro-Russian Ukrainian Separatist" is a euphemism on par with "undocumented American".

What is more telling is the speed with which reports by the "separatists" about shooting a "transport plane" and earlier boasts about Russian mercenaries acquiring long range SAM equipment from Ukrainian base were deleted.

Of course, there are already the recordings of the actual shooters reporting to their superiors by radio, that went like:

"What about the transport plane?"
"This was a civilian jet"
"Did you identify it"
"Not yet, just saw the first debris, not been to the main crash site yet"
"What does it look like"
"Complete farkup, women and children all over the place, hundreds of them"
"Saw any weapons"
"No, just towels, clothes, shiat like that"
"Any documents?"
"Yeah, Indonesian student from whatever university"
"What business did these farks have flying over a war zone"

And so on.

TheJoe03: these rebels.

These are no ordinary rebels, Igor Girkin (aka Strelkov) is/was a GRU officer. GRU is, like, the Russian army intelligence. A lot, if not most of the "separatists" on the ground that are actually fighting the Ukraine army are reported to be volunteers, mercenaries or military from Russia.

Also, people I trust tell me that a trained crew is needed to shoot a rocket out of the SAM system involved, and a well-trained one to actually take down an aircraft.

And if you check out FlightAware, it's not unusual for flights to deviate a bit from their plan, as required by unforeseen weather, changes in schedule, etc.  This flight going further east over Ukraine wouldn't be particularly out of the ordinary.

Fark these people though, and fark them hard.  Apparently over 100 of the Dutch victims were AIDS researchers heading to a conference in Melbourne, Australia.  So over 100 people dedicated to saving lives were just killed by a farking Russian missile.  I really hope it doesn't end in war, but I hope Russia pulls its thumb out of whatever idiocy it is doing, rounds up these incompetent farkers, and educates them KGB style.

Half our cops are former Marines and the other half are active reserve. Say what you like about our militarized police, the one thing we never need to worry about is armed separatists running amok in America...unless, you know, the cops themselves were the armed separatists. Which is entirely possible.

Yeap pretty straight forward.  This isn't (well it wasn't) a full on war in the Ukraine so plains flying on international routes above 30k feet tended to just go about their business.  Cept some dumb farks got a hold of Buk launchers (where from is a bit irrelevant) and then used them without proper identification.  A war crime at best ...  a Buk launcher crew in an unmarked grave somewhere at worse.
