Can't he just start pretending he's got some class again?
Most of us would probably promise to go along with it just to shut him up.

Shouldn't Tiger be used to cameras by this point in his career?

Normally I'd laugh along with the joke, but I saw a story earlier today about how the Open actively engages fans to use their phones/tablets and its apps, while USGA tournaments (here in the states) ban cell phones at their events. Maybe there is something to it, maybe not. After all workers don't hold up 'QUIET' signs when golfers line up for no reason.

Its a tough course and Tigers only 3 shots off the lead, hes still got a chance.

I'm watching the live coverage, and just overheard a steward reminding the crowd that there is absolutely no recording of any kind allowed, whether stills, audio, or video; that the police will remove anybody who appears to be using their camera as a phone; and that phones must be set to silent. Also, I can see a worker holding up a QUIET sign even as a I type.

The only explanation I can think of is that your article is referring to things like scoreboard/highlights apps that don't distract the players, because they are every bit as strict about other uses of phones as the USGA is.

Tiger should be listening to the voice inside his head, not listening to the crowd. Dude's mind is messed up.

czetie: that the police will remove anybody who appears to be using their camera as a phone

Of course the police would remove such a person.  That is wizardry.  Who knows how they are also affecting the outcome of the tournament.

He's not the only golfer commenting on this issue. It's common sense that spectators should not do things to disrupt play but some people are just self centered.

Well, sure, everyone knows it is because cameras steal your soul. Tiger is just the only one talking about it.

Joking aside, the "no recording" thing is more about protecting media rights. And yes, that is also completely stupid. The silliest part is that there is absolutely no reason for the camera on your phone to simulate the clicking sound of a mechanical shutter. (On "prosumer" digital cameras there's still mechanical sounds from the shutter, the mirror, and potentially the whirr of the lens zoom/iris focus. Even new mirrorless cameras have the other two noises).

Who is the person who gets up in the morning and says to themselves, "I have tickets for the golf today, I think I'll shoot "It's in the hole!" every time somebody hits a ball. I bet that's never been done before"?

pkellmey: Well, sure, everyone knows it is because cameras steal your soul. Tiger is just the only one talking about it.

I'm pretty sure Tiger has nothing to worry about, having sold his soul to Satan in return for sex and golf many years ago.

This.

You always hear the analysts talking about his swing changes over the years and his physical fitness so he can get back to form. He just needs a good coke-fueled romp with some porn stars or a random Perkins waitress again. If he does that he might lap Jack's record.

And if golf was played with steady noise, the sound of a camera going off wouldn't matter.  But it isn't, so those comparisons are worthless.

So glad he is back. My summer job is to go to all his events and scream "YOU THE MAN, TIGER!" on half his shots and "GET IN THE HOLE" on the other half. I TiVo every event so I can go back and hear myself later. Whenever friends come over to my apartment, I put it on and they are always really impressed.

o/

OK, not every hole, but there's a certain bent appeal in going to a PGA event, having about 3 beers, standing by the tee on a par-5, and letting out a loud and thunderous "GET IN THE HOLE!" when some no-name has pulled his 3 wood to play it safe.

Tennis is just bizarre. The spectators have to be deathly quiet during play, but on-court it's 3 or 5 sets of the players making all kinds of very primal sounds. Really?

And can someone explain why it was such a tragedy for the women to get less prize money when they're playing less tennis? Did I miss where they went to best of 5 like the men?

I agree with this especially when I'm paying for a round. I think in this instance Tiger was just doing his usual blame someone else thing, however.

With Dustin Johnson and Sergio at least equally likely to have an 80 in them over the weekend, this tournament is McIlroy's unless the weather goes completely sideways and the Claret Jug lands in Schwartzel or Oosthuizen's lap.

Unlikely? How about no way in hell that happens. Tiger will never win another major. His back is farked, his head is farked & every time he passes someone in the gallery, they give him that knowing look and "The Song" starts playing. It's beautiful, really.

He's done!

Certainly Rory controls his own destiny. I have a feeling about sergio though. And I sort of want him to get one. That was previously unthinkable to me but I think he's finally been beaten down enough that it would not bother me.

My pick. I'm a total sucker for his game, though.
