fusillade762: What is it with TFers and cats? I mean, I love cats and am glad to be in the company of others that do, but how does a TF-only thread generate so many comments? And don't you worry about the "liters" not bothering because they feel like anything they post will be drowned out?

How did a site started with a squirrel end up with cats?

I dunno man, I think a cat thread began appearing regularly about 7 or 8 years ago, and due to its regularity and long-runningness it became very popular and attracted many followers.  It grew and evolved, like many things on the internet, and over a long period of time has become what you see here.  Probably in another few years it will look quite different again.  And not only did a single founding squirrel end up with a lot of cats -- it ended up with a huge site that has thousands of other articles about countless other topics too!

It's hard not to feel intimidated by the large number of posts sometimes, liter or not.  I know I do occasionally.  Some liters like to just jump in on their first read, many others follow for months or years before posting.  Everyone's different.  I've been posting here for a donkey's age, but I still like seeing new people, everyone's got something interesting to share and even if it's just a quick hello I'm still happy you popped by.  Sometimes a little hello gets lost when there's a lot of other stuff going on and that can be frustrating but keep trying.  Replying to / commenting on other people's specific posts and/or asking a question will often get you some good responses.  Come by enough times and you'll probably find yourself right at home with lots of nice people.

I hope this reply made sense.  Come join in, you love cats, so we'd love to have you.  That's all there is to it.  Cheers, eh.

No tissues nescessary...and, back in the saddle again!

I feel the dawn approaching,
I breathe in the fresh day.

So crisp and clean.
Hints of sunshine
And bird song.

I stretch,
Filling every
Empty space.

I hear,
A sigh.

Flutter of eyelids.
At the brink of wakefulness.

My time to pad upward.
Quiet of paw.

Stepping without weight,
Until at last,

I am nose to nose
With my chosen one.

For a moment,
We are in Harmony.

Breath to breath,
Life to life.

The sun streams in,
Warming our souls.

Just got a call from the hospital. Overall Nathan is OK. His jaw is stable and there are no fractures or broken teeth. There is a spot where tartar was broken off and the gum underneath is very tender. Another possibility is he overextended or sprained his his jaw trying while trying to fit Wolf's entire head in his mouth. In any case he's in pain and will be on kitty morphine for a few days

We had him there two years ago for a dental checkup, but at that time they said the tartar wasn't bad enough for a cleaning. The emergency doc gave us a referral to their dental unit for a checkup and/or cleaning.

I already have the temporary door to the man cave in place and Nathan, Biscuit (Nathan's champion and favorite snuggle buddy) and I will spend a quiet night locked up. I also removed the 'watering hole' next to the bed where all the disputes seem to start. Need to find another spot for it in neutral territory.

I am so proud of Biscuit! The way my wife describes it there was no doubt whatsoever that he was protecting Nathan. He wedged himself between the two and squared off with Wolf. When they play Biscuit always get the crap beat out of him by Wolf, but that didn't stop him from protecting his buddy.

Gotta go pick up Nathan. BBL

this is Mokey... i rescued her and her brother, Batman at the end of May. I was driving home from work one morning and they were seriously in the middle of a busy highway... they weren't old enough to walk, and their eyes weren't open. I brought them home, and my cat, Godwin, became their foster dad. More pics to follow!!

Hai guise! I'm taking Uncle Cabbage's example and am sitting in the local library (not sure when I will have internet at my new abode). I just skimmed the thread quickly, so - condolences on the losses, paws crossed for all ailing animals and peoples.....

yobbery:  Biscuit is a nimrod. Yes, I pissed on my cat. I got him nose to tail.

Serves the little shiat right for never coming out to meet me. JMHO.  :o)

professional_vampire: For those who are interested in the Caturday t-shirt from last week - heeere's how to order!   Link

For some reason, the library is blocking that site. Please email me the info (for future reference, I can't afford to buy right now)

I still have to post the pics I took last week at yobbery's house, and give you all an update, but I have to go back to job hunting right now. HOWEVER, I hope to be over at MR & MRS CDK's house tomorrow where I can use their internet and catch up with you all. If not, I'll come back to the library -  I've missed you guys.

Caturday.  All critters welcome..  Well, then..warning..  =)     Spider ahead..will give you ample white-space to avoid it and post, if you no wanna look..

So..I posted a pic of this little lady here, within the past couple days..thought it was this thread, but no see it..  No matter..

This pretty has occupied a corner of the top landing of my stairs fer several weeks, now..and has been doing an admirable job of pest control..  Well, here's the pic..

That egg sack was *not* there when I went to bed, yesterday morn..  To me, it means that soon I will have my Hallway Insect Defense Force back..  No more than one mosquito, ant, housefly up in my room a week..if that..  I love it..!  For many of you, tho', the idea of a hall and stairs lined with visible and hidden spiders is prolly horrifying..  Lucky you no live here..  ;)

Hey way I'm gonna be able to respond to all the comments I would like to, so I will proceed with an update and some pics.

I'm gradually getting settled in, and am trying to (gratefully) adjust to the slower lifestyle here in the mid-west. I will more than likely not have internet at home until I get a job, so unfortunately my attendance on Caturday (and checking email) will continue to be sporadic - but I will check in when possible.

I wanna thank everyone for the love and support that you given me during this time. Special thanks to CDK and Mrs CDK for all they have done - I would not be here right now if not for them.

Meanwhile, while I was having dinner at their house last night (damn, those people can cook - you practically had to roll me outta there) I got to meet Butter, Dusty, Caesar and even the one and only Cooper the cat.

/ Racer never came out to see me

Finally....a peaceful night at Casa de Yobbery. No kitty spats or golden showers to report.

Nathan is up and about this morning. He's being his cuddly self but he seems really sore. Still has some drooling and he's smacking his lips. He did eat a little last evening and I saw him at the bowl this morning. My wife went to work this morning so I don't know the status of his kitty morphine. She should be home shortly.

Ms MacGyver: On another note - anyone know how to keep a cat from chewing up cables?  Phone cords, earphone cords, MP3 player cords, etc.

Bitter Apple works for us. PetSmart or PetCo carry it....I can't remember which. You need to re-apply every once in a while but it does work.

'K, hoomin and kitteh feeding complete! Quick "first cat I remember" story.

When I was in first grade, a cat showed up at our house completely uninvited. It was a neighborhood cat that had been around for a while and it would choose a house with nice hoomins in it to hang out at for a while, then move on to the next house. It had many names and it was a bit of a neighborhood tradition to name the cat when it started terrorizing everyone who walked into your yard. Everyone knew about the cat, everyone fed the cat and no one cared when the cat moved on to the next house because that's what the cat had always done. It was The Way of the Cat. Within a week of choosing our yard as its latest bit of territory, it had torn a hole in our screen door and was coming and going as it pleased. This wouldn't have been too bad, except it was a semi-feral cat. Couldn't touch it, couldn't get too terribly close to it at all, but I shared my food with it (did you know cats will eat PB&J?) and it was always pretty close to wherever I was. That cat and I were buddies! We were such buddies that a few days after she tore the hole in the screen, she had three kittens under my bed. YAY!

Trying to tell a first grader NOT to touch the kittens under her bed - especially one that's already been bitten by a squirrel up at the park because she loves the cute fuzzy animals so much - is a lot like talking to a wall. My mom risked life and limb to move the kittens, but Alley (what we named the cat) would always move them right back under my bed. I would crawl under the bed and sleep there with the kittens. They were my Best Friends Ever!

Sadly, not all friendships last forever. My mom took me and my kittens up to the grocery store and had me pick them new homes. This was obviously before she had learned about "responsible adoption procedures". Now, telling a first grade girl that if you don't get rid of the kittens, they will grow up and have even more kittens and pretty soon we'll be sleeping under piles of kittens is NOT the best way to get rid of kittens. What that little kid is going to hear is "the most awesome thing you can imagine is going to happen and we have to stop it, right now". I stood in front of the store and I cried, and I sobbed and I wailed. I eventually kicked a lady who wanted one of thek kittens and got locked in the car until my mom had given away my kittens. I was so upset, I did not speak to my mother for a long time.

After Alley's babies were gone, she moved up the street and all my friends were GONE. After a long time of not saying anything to my mom except "i hate you" and "i hope someone makes your friends go away" I begged for a kitten of my own and was told "no" because it would grow up and have more kittens and I'd be really bad instead of giving them away. I could not have kittens, I'd have to find new friends. I was angry, lonely and absolutely heartbroken. I did make new friends, though.

While I don't remember this part, my mom said a few months later she went to put some of my clothes away in my room after doing laundry and noticed a ladybug and an earwig crawling out of my drawer. She opened my dresser drawer and saw three little boxes, no lids, and bugs of all kinds EVERYWHERE. She screamed, and I came running in and yelled at her to "leave my friends alone!". I wasn't allowed outside for an eternity after that. Guess you should have let me keep the kittens, RIGHT MOM?

I never have had much use for other humans, not even as a child. Obviously. ;-p

Here, have a cat
/now you know why she eventually comes around about the feral cats here
//the alternative thing I decided to help could be so much worse

An open letter to the residents of the Pacific Northwest: Apparently I'm some kind of low-level weather deity or something, because just as I moved from CA to OR there was a cooling trend at the place I departed and a heatwave in the place that I arrived. Still working on using this power for good (or consciously at all). Sorry, my bad.

So on the upside, we're settled in here, and the best description for the south-of-Portland area is "nice." I'm not being rude or condescending, it really is nice. The weather is nice, the scenery is nice, the people are nice, the food is nice... It's just so mellow and pretty. And the cats are quite happy, too, that they've got both of us and a new place to explore. I'll have pics later when I read through the thread; just dropping in before the hubby and I go take care of errands and find something nice to eat. Need noms something fierce.

Deathbymeteor: Good morning Caturday,

Busy week here. Had to take a new certification test to prove I still know what I know, so that was a couple hundred dollars I could use for other things. Like the PC repairs I'm going to have to do soon, since the fan is dying, which means replacement parts to be ordered...

Have you tried lubricating the fan?  Had an old, second-hand PC that had a cooling fan completely die on me.  Was in another bout between jobs, so I couldn't afford a new one (yes, I was that broke).

Tried looking up how to jerry-rig a new fan duct from a regular desk fan and found you could use 3-in-1 sewing machine oil.  Disassembled the 'puter, removed the fan, peeled the label half off the fan and found a lube point for the motor bearing.  One or two drops later, and the fan was OK and I was back in business!

Oh yes! I am glad to hear that there has been some improvement. I was thinking, re your daughter..maybe she could help out at the local shelter for a time? It would give her the doggie time she needs, as well as giving her a sense of control. ( as in this is something I can effect).. Just a thought..

It's so funny that you say that - that's exactly what we did!  She has to go through a class to get "certified" to be able to "work" there (as a volunteer).  Once that's complete, she get to have her face full of kitty and goggies all the time!

Diocletian's Last Cabbage: Happy Moansday everbuddy!

I was standing on my back deck yesterday afternoon, smoking my cigar and sipping on my bumtini (a stired martini with no vodka, gin or martin) when I suddenly realized:  I FORGOT THE INVENTION EXCHANGE!

And so, without further adoo...

OK kids, how many times have you asked yourself, "why can't I get this damn charcoal to light?  Why, oh why, didn't I get the Matchlight brand instead of this damn el-Cheapo brand from the Dollah Store?"

I was asking myself this same question the other weekend, trying to get some no-name brand charcoal to light.  I must've dumped 1/5th of a can of lighter fluid on the coals.  And in spite of paper, grease-soaked paper towels, cardboard, and LOTS of re-lights, I STILL couldn't get the damn fire started!  I ended up giving up and pan frying my steak.  DISASTER!

So my invention this week is based on the need to get charcoal to light so you can grill some meat without the need for lots of lighter fluid, matches, or tinder.

My fellow Caturdayans, I give you:

The Solar-Powered Charcoal Grill.

It works like this;  A solar panel (or an optional AC plug) charges up some high-capacity batteries.  The batteries are discharged through heating elements that are built into a platform that fits into any hibachi, small grill, or standard state park charcoal grill.  The charcoal is poured onto the elements, and the heater is switched on.

The current won't last long of course, but it will last long enough to get the fire going on the bottom briquettes that are in contact with the heating elements.  These get the rest of the pile on fire.  10 or 15 minutes later and you have meat searing on the upper grill!  Bone ape-a-tit!

Waddya think, sirs?

Poor D'Artagnan got disappointed last night...

The last three days only way I knew he hadn't gone walkabout was when I came home from work in the morning the food I'd put out for him was gone.
Riktor and Wimsey aren't really wild about his chicken-with-olive-oil (canned gushyfud is fine with them), so I knew they weren't eating it....and Raven was with me at work.

I was asleep last night...takes me 24 hours to cycle from 'night shift' to 'day shift', and I does it by sleeping. D'Artagnan showed up about 2A..."Meow (I'm home, where's my dinner?)"
I looked at the clock..."Sorry'll have to make do with kibble tonight. Mom's tired. You'll get chicken tomorrow."
A couple more 'meows'...but he took it like a gentleman...mostly...and deigned to give me a cuddle.
They'll all get their preferred foods later today...and hopefully D'Artagnan will show up early enough to be seen eating it.

Is this what having a teenager is like?

Hai guise! Just cruisin' along over here, trudging  is in there and I !GASP! actually checked mah emails, which counts as a "break" right now.  Still working on 'em, but I am going down the list.  THANK YOU guys for everything. If I miss you, I apologize - I don't mean to not return mails. I'm just tired and overwhelmed.

I gotta give you a Lady Earl of Grey update - she still exists between two rooms, but she has added occasionally sitting in the hall and staring at me while I'm in the kitchen. Gogh Beastie still likes to try and sniff her tail (of course) but now instead of screaming like she's being murdered, she just growls. Progress! She growls a lot. She's also taken to sitting on my windowsill and growling at the outside world. I'm so jealous. I can't fit on the windowsill to growl at the outside world. I have to do that from my chair. :-(

Here, have a chinchilla! They're so cute, even when they're mad. grrrr! hehehe!

What izzit with cats and feet...just can't keep one far enough away from the other.

Got to, I mean work Friday night, and the drill is Raven gets her dinner immediately (OK, within 10 minutes at least) after we get there. I'm taking the food and her dish over to counter to combine properly, meanwhile talking to a co-worker.

Raven's skated a bit too close to the edge and gotten her little black paw stepped on. Of course I immediately scooped her up, cuddled her and apologized for stepping on her foot

Wimsey has taken Skimbleshanks as his mentor; "♫ ♪ He's a cat who wouldn't be ignored! ♪ ♫"
Wimsey will NOT be ignored, especially not in his own house. This has gotten him quite a few stepped-on toes as well...
and I will take any oath you like his paw was NOT there when I started to put my foot down.
He will sit RIGHT in front of me, look up and "MAOW!" in his polite little voice. I have to manually scoot him along until he sees that I understand what he wants me to attend to...THEN and only then will he move on his own.

Try to ignore and just step over or around him, and he will run across your path, stepping on your feet, or parallel to it, brushing your legs (only with some English on the 'brush'). At 14 lbs of mostly muscle, he's a substantial fellow and can affect your balance if he's going fast enough.
As a final resort, he'll nip. Not hard enough to break the skin, but a good pinch. "Ignore THAT, will you?"

I've had to warn folks whom he's deigned to greet "He's rubbed against your legs and meowed at you twice. You'd better acknowledge him now, or he'll nip you."

That boy has a very strong sense of himself.

The first cat I remember was a beat up black tomcat. Of course he was named Blackie - why do you ask? We were living in Oklahoma at the time (Dad was stationed at Tinker AFB). Blackie liked to bathe with my sister Ruth. He loved wet hair and would lay in wait on top of the door until someone would walk through. Then he'd pounce on their head and chew their hair. This was in the early fifties, so he was an indoor/outdoor cat. He terrorized the dogs of the neighborhood. They would cross the street rather than walk in front of the house we were living in. He didn't make the trip when we moved to Michigan. He got passed on to another service person, though.

We were never without a cat for long. Mom was a real softie and took in many, many cats. She was like that until the day she died. I think there was a sign strays understood. So many showed up. One would move into the house and another would take up residence in the garage. Dad made up a nest area they could snuggle into. She kept it up after Dad died and now my sister has inherited the house and the responsibility to take care of the strays.

In other news - I'm cat-sitting for my upstairs neighbor this weekend, her cat Jojo is such a sweetie, but very skinny - anyone have any ideas about cat ailments or long-term conditions which might leave the animal scrawny to the point of skin and bones (despite definitely being fed enough) but otherwise totally normal and healthy? She went missing about 9mos ago for a week, but got a vet check-up afterwards so there's nothing wrong with her, but she looks alarmingly thin.

Prolly already been addressed..but "worms" is the first thing that jumps to mind..and the easiest to address..  Ask a Vet the best OTC treatment to use..*go* to the Vet (the owner, not you) and get the cat a checkup..a broad-spectrum de-wormer is only about $15..the cheapest line-item on Orange's recent visit..  =P

Next things to think of are far more serious and hate to why Vet visit is preferable..but, Feline Leukemia and renal failure also fit the bill..

danceswithcrows: First cat (family): In 1981, one of my father's colleagues got a job offer in England. He had a tabby cat. Multiple-month quarantine and large fees for that meant he couldn't take the cat to England. He asked if we could adopt the cat. We said yes, and Paganini the 15-pound classic tabby (looked like the inimitable Maru, but less telegenic.) So we kept him until 1993, when kidney failure, thyroid problems, and old age got him. He didn't like to sit on people's laps. He'd sit right next to you, but not on your lap. He was also absolute death to the mouse, vole, and chipmunk population near our house.

First cat (mine): In August 2005, I went out for a cigarette, and heard meowing from underneath a bush near the apartment complex door. I traced the meowing to a tiny black cat who really wanted to be petted and had no collar. I wondered if I could deal with a cat, and then thought I couldn't live with myself if I ignored the cat. So I picked her up and schlepped her up 3 flights of stairs to my apartment. (I was lucky she was a Burmese; she was super-pissed and Burmese don't generally attack people.) I poured out a bowl of water and shredded some ham for her. She seemed to appreciate that. Then I drove to the nearby Meijer, bought a litter box, some cat litter, and some cat food.

I posted "Found Cat" signs at the nearby apartment buildings. A guy showed up a day later, looked at the cat, and said, "I've been feeding this cat, but it's not mine. I think someone abandoned it." So I adopted her. The first week I had her, she hid in the closet, only coming out to eat and drink and use the litterbox. Then she started meowing raucously at every opportunity and occupying my lap every chance she got.

Almost looks like a Havana Brown....

Remember how I had six Guinea fowl? then one disappeared and and I had only five? and then one showed up again after a week and I had six? Now I have seven guinea fowl!!!!
Bird 2 is Lazarus, the one that went missing for a week, now I don't think it is my bird at all but part of a flock of fugitive birds from a nearby farm. The only way I can tell it from my flock is the fact that its tail is missing. I think they have been harassed by dogs and left their farm to come to mine.
The story of bird 4:
My neighbor with the dog rescue called me over on Wednesday and ask me to look at a bird she had. She was mowing and saw Lucy the great Pyrenees mix running with a chicken like bird in her mouth. She ran over to chase the other dogs away, there are 20 in her yard right now, and put the bird in a crate in the garage.
it was bleeding a little but she couldn't asses too much as the bird was frantic.
I came over with my carrier and when we tried to move the bird into my crate one of the lab mixes jumped up and bit at the bird. It bit my neighbor in the thumb hard enough to draw blood.
We took her to my place and I turned it loose with my birds. They came over to see the new one and she just walked into the flock and merged with them.
The next day I noticed a few things, Fiona was really sniffing the ground and carrier, the other birds were not letting her hang out with them, and this morning they were chasing her in the pen.
I managed to catch her and lock her in the little biddy cage inside the main guinea pen. I could see she had more than just a few feathers pulled so I sprayed the injury with more of the blue kote and isolated her in the little cage. If the dog and other birds can smell blood on her they will chase her from the flock to keep the coyotes and predators away. Cruel but normal behavior from these less than domestic birds.
When I put he in the small cage she she was very hot to the touch, I know birds have a higher body temp than we do but she may have fever too. The other birds came flying in to investigate her distress calls and later hung around the cage to offer their support. I hope if she heals up that they will take her back into the flock.
/Lucy's guarding instincts must have kicked in when the other dogs attacked the bird
//she is an alpha female and I think she saved it's life.
///neighbor offered to let me have Lucy but I don't think she will stay on my farm since her old pack is right across the road.

CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED: CAT-LIKE TYPING DETECTED: And, since I said it, I should start..

..and, it appears I didn't start..  =p

Thanks to those who did..  Love the stories..

Now..  Let's hear from the rest of you..  *grin*

I'm a little late to the table, so apologies if the topics have moved on...My first cat was Josie. She was a grey tabby. I don't even remember getting her, because i was still a wee one when that happened. I think she was a kitten that a couple who lived upstairs from us came into from their own kitteh. But she was fully part of my earliest childhood memories.

She was a sweetie. I remember clearly one day in the late fall my father was doing something with the car and had the hood up. It had been up for a while as he had been tinkering or something. At some point Josie decided it was toasty in there. Well you might guess the rest. The fan belt hit her and off she ran (hobbled). I was devastated and so was my mom (i don't recall how my father reacted, but I'm sure he felt some degree of crappiness. Not the warmest of men, my father. I doubt my brother even noticed; he was rarely home as he played every sport at all possible times).

We feared and assumed she had crawled away somewhere and passed. But several weeks later, here comes this little haggard-looking furry thing hobbling down the driveway. It was snowing pretty hard. Josie came back!!! We took her to the vet; part of her right ear was forever lopped off and her eye was a little messed up but neither was life-threatening. They were able to get her right hind leg back into place (it had been scrunched up on the side -- kind of hard to describe it). But a week later she jumped down off the radiator and it popped back up again. My understanding is that the vets said to mess with it more at that point would be a bad idea. So she spent the rest of her days on three legs. And she could MOVE  ;)  Never slowed her down.

She had a wonderful crackly-purr and was sweet and lovable the rest of her days. She lived for quite a long time after those traumatic events. She was always queen of the castle, even when a young whipper-snapper kitteh was brought into the family. Loved Josie.

/sorry for TL;DR reminiscing ;)

I will sadly not ever catch up this Caturday, I has been too busy with the non-stop cat drama we have around here. However dramatic the drama is that I face, I take consolation in the fact that I am an incredibly determined sort (aka "stubborn biatch") and I totally got this, even if it kills everyone around me except the cats. The cats I'm just going to piss off really bad.

Anyway, since I am giving up on catching up with mah Caturday fambly, I will assume that everyone needs, deserves or just plain wants a hug. ♥ (((Here ya go!))) ♥ I can't give much these days, not even to myself, but I'll never run out of hugs and hope, both of which I will be honored to share! The best part of that is, if you give hugs and hope, you ALWAYS get some back. ☺

It looks like Cat-Like Typing Detected *waves* asked for cat stories from our youth from what I see above my post. I need to find a food and then I'll share my "when I was a child" cat story. It involves a feral cat and her kittens. Apparently that was not just a childhood event, it was some sort of life path foreshadowing. Dammit. lol!

To the kitchen, awaaaaay!

Is that what's called a dilute calico or are all calicos just headed for that coloration? I remember the calico and her kittens we adopted in my youth were separate solid colors.
/asking because goldfish...;-)

Genetics are fascinating.  In the case of tortishell and calico, the pair of alleles that control whether a cat will be red (O - Orange), black (o - not orange) or tortishell (Oo) is located on the X chromosome.  Each individual skin cell randomly "turns off" one (or more) X chromosome(s).  Sometimes you get large patches of orange and black, sometimes the two are mixed and almost uniformly distributed.  It is possible for females to have a single X or three or more.  And although rare, it is possible for a male to have two X chromosomes.

I've always heard that a calico is a tortishell with the white spotting gene.  The black area can be black or chocolate brown.  Both red and black can be diluted to cream and blue/lilac, or only on points as in Siamese, or have a tabby pattern overlaid, etc.

KK..caught up on everything 'til midnight-past.. (easy to remember stop spot..)   Will go back and finish after posting.. is usual, loooong post that will cover yesterday and t'day, up 'til present..

As I think I mentioned, Son and his fiancee, her toddler and son's roomate all came down fer a short-notice visit and we went out and spent most o'the day in Corning, NY..  First at a restaurant I used to work at (owner and family were outt'a town, demmitt..I wanted him t'meet my son..) and had a great seen below..  =)

Should be fairly obvious who's who in the  pic..

After that, we went to the Corning Museum of Glass..Fiancee and toddler got in free (she is 19..  All teens and under get in free) and I got in half-price..  It appears they expanded their Zip Code list from only three codes, and mine is now included as "Local Resident - Half-Price"..  Kewlies..  =)

We spent a couple+ hours there..the son's roommate won a raffle at the glass-blowing demonstration and got a beautiful, large bowl-on-pedestal piece (think candy bowl with a center stand)..his ticket ended 561..mine ended 560..soooooo close..  =P

Took a couple hunnerd pics..will only bore you with one..  This be me with my had resting on the 200-inch glass blank that was the form for the giant reflector in the Mount Palomar telescope..and the *only* thing I remember from my first ever trip to the Museum when I was 7..  Is what jumpstarted my lifelong interest in Astronomy..was *awesome* to be able to actually touch it..  =D  40 years ago, it was set behind a rail and 15 feet distant..  (sorry fer fuzziness..  Son's RM took it..)

We headed home after..  HM had started a fire in the firepit to get rid of some scrap-wood on the property and, as it was a coolish day, we all sat around and chatted a bit..  They had planned to stay 'til 9-ish..but son wasn't feeling well (sadly, he got my teeth and is in as bad shape as I was..and earlier in his life, to boot..) and the baby was getting they headed back out around..I wanna say 5, mebbe..?

I came back up t'my room..after a bit longer at the fire with HM..and caught up here..then, apparently, went t'sleep not too long after 10pm..  Is a bit fuzzy as, by this point, I'd been awake 52+ hours..  =P  I'd managed t'get everything ready fer t'day..and set my alarms..set one fer pm instead o'am..luckily, the one was enuff..woke up a little after 10am..'bout twelve hours sleep..

Got everything t'gether..   It seemed Orange had spent all nite with me and, at this point, was still asleep on the bed..  I prepped the cat-carrier and got him up and in afore he knew anything was goin' on..  =D

Got to the Vet's dead-on app't time..  Orange's first ever Vet visit..and only second car ride in his life..first being back when we moved with him as a kitten..

We were the only ones there..filled out the new-patient paperwork and were fairly quickly in a room..  Nice place, but small..NTTAWRT..only two examination rooms..great and friendly staff..  I was not displeased..  =)

Assistant came in and did the basics..then Vet came in and did the full exam..

Here's the rundown:

- no fever
- no swelling
- no breaks or fractures
- no visible wounds or outer injury
- no external parasites

The Vet had several ideas in mind, coming in, that could cause the hindquarters problems Orange has been having..but he has symptoms of *none* of them..

She took him from the table to floor to see him walk..and he wasn't really that co-operative..  Walked crouched, cautiously, slowly..  If he was limping at this point, the nature of his walking totally did not show it..

The Vet presented me with a laundry-list of things she wanted to do..some needed regardless of the reason I came in..had the Assistant run an estimate and bring it to me..   Too much for me to pay today.. Assistant   asked me what I was willing/able to afford right then and I said $100..  She took the estimate back to the Vet and let her piece together the most important parts to fit that budget..

Here's what we ended up with..

- Cost of visit..a given..
- First ever Rabies Vaccination
- Broad-spectrum de-wormer
- Sub-cutaneous saline/fluid treatment (apparently he seemed somewhat dehydrated, tho' I do see him drink..)

Assistant and Intern came in and handled all that..  (..they had with them a really nifty Hannibal Lechter-style Kitty Face case he got bitey, obviously..but was not needed..)

Vet still wants to do:

- Bloodwork fer Feline Leukemia
- Same fer FIV (Kitty Aids)
- two other things I no remember

The work done t'day came to $108..over my $100 idea, but I said "Do it."

Remaining tests will be another $81..  I'm honestly surprised..this all seems *really* inexpensive to me..sooo wish I'd had more money so's I could have gotten it all done..  Prolly too much was spent, overall t'day, as it is..  Gunna be another financially crappy week..but needed be done..

Thru it all, Orange was a real trooper..  =D   He's not at all good with being picked up, even with me, and an absolute monster when anyone else tries it..  But, he suffered everything with near-gentlemanly behaviour..just one flying-fur attempt at the start..then just quietly put up with everything..temp taking, Rabies shot, worming pill, fluid injection (he *did* mewl a bit..but didn't fight)..allowed the Vet and Assistant and Intern to move and handle him..  I was both surprised and proud..

I left there with two directives..the first I should'a thought of, m'self..  One, get him on video when he's walking badly so they can see it..   Two, watch the fluid bubble under his skin..may move to joints..faster it goes away, the more it was needed..iff'n it takes time, he wasn't so dehydrated..  Well, when I remembered to check, it was gone.  From anywhere.  That was ~3 hours after he got it..and they told me it might take a day or two..  Pretty obvious it was needed..

Made several stops on the way back home..HM's son was with me and one of us was always in the car with Orange, wherever I stopped..  Don't need some random patron in the lot smashing in my car window, thinking they're saving a pet..when I'm only in each d@mn store fer a literal 5 min, picking up the 1 or two Items I specifically stopped fer..

Got home, let Orange out of the carrier in my room..and he has pretty much sleeping on my bed ever since..pops his head up every once in a while to make sure I'm here//he's home..but mostly sleeping and none the worse fer wear..

Caught up on *most* o'my stuff..and now back off to catch up on this thread..

Cheers fer the  sherpa sighting..and, now, to see what fun awaits me..!!   =D

Diocletian's Last Cabbage

Dude, your killing me! Love the captions!

*sigh* Nathan is at the emergency hospital now. After the spat with Wolf he kept licking his chops as if he had hair stuck in this mouth. The licking turned into extreme tenderness and drooling.

Our vet recommended we take him straight to the emergency room. The doc at the hospital thinks he may have a puncture wound in his mouth or a tooth issue. The doc doesn't think his Jaw is broken but needs to sedate him for a better look. Since we are literally within walking distance of the hospital (PVSEC) he told us to just hang out at home and they'll call us after they get a chance to take a peek. They're pretty busy now and it may take a bit of time. Other than his jaw/tooth/whatever he's perfectly healthy and I'm sure other cases are going to take precedence.

He weighs 16lbs! Freaked me out because he is not the least bit fat, but him and Wolf are both big muscular cats.

I'll update when I hear something.

please do!!

yobbery so glad the news is good. I wonder if you could have multiple water bowls, placed around the house? That might help too.

When my Siamese was alive we had a bowl in the bathroom, and one in the kitchen...the kind a dog could not move around. Because our other cat Punkin liked to play water bowl hockey!

I was sitting on the deck finishing off a knife project when I heard rustling behind me.  THIS WAS RIGHT BEHIND MY CHAIR.  Once I got past the near heart attack,  I realized it wasn't venomous and grabbed the camera.

This girl ran off last Sunday, and didn't show up until Friday morning about 1:30.  She's different some how. She is a rescue cat who never really seemed to enjoy life.  Since her return she has had more to say, demanded more snugs and rubs, and is actually getting along with our other cat.  Right now they are hanging out in a window together!!  Never seen that before.  She even woke me up this morning demanding rubs.  No idea why the change, but I hope it lasts.

She's been fixed, right?  She couldn't be having kittens?

Oh yes. Don't need to be bithin no babies

Hai guize! I'm just checkin' in real quick like. I am not nearly close to being caught up here, cuz I has a BUSY! I didn't want anyone going into a panic and thinking the Hobo Cats had killed me to death and were currently gnawing on what was left of my corpse, so I thought I'd take a small break and say "Hai".

Earl is doing fine even though she exists almost solely between the guest bathroom across the hall from my Lair and the Super Secret Lair of Infinite Doom. She's feeling confident enough that she was just playing and hopping and running between the two rooms. She also sometimes likes sitting on the back of my chair while I'm working. She's mah Stupervizer. :-D Gogh Beastie likes terrorizing her by checking to make sure her gooshy fuds are not "better" than his gooshy fuds, so it takes a while to get them both fed. He also enjoys staring at her while she's hiding under the bed, staring at her from my desk while she's on top of the bed and sneaking up and staring at her while she stares out the window. So yeah - he's kinda a jerk sometimes, but it's more of a stalkerish jerky behavior than a "imma gonna kick yer butt" kinda jerkish behavior, so that's good.

Mamma Hisss! and The Children of Hisss! are still in my back yard being absolutely squeeeable. I keep getting different stories from different groups about resources, but I've determined in the past two days that I really am not going to get any favors from the county or even the SPCA. The rescues are overwhelmed and so I've pretty much resigned myself to not getting any help from them until Yule at the earliest. I'm on my own! I'm hitting Amazon's mTurk to make the money I need to get them all spayed/neutered, including the source of the problem (adult cats wandering the area). Current head count of Hobo Cats who visit my yard comes to eight, but that includes The Children of Hisss!, so I've got a bit of time for them. After I trap them and start socializing them, they no longer count as "feral" and the price goes up. *sigh*

I have a shout out on Freecycle for a trap of my very own since it could be weeks before I get a loaner (there's a waiting list! gah!) but if all else fails, a cat trap will be the very first expense for the brand new, very unwilling and rather cranky about having to do all this stuff rescue group known as Hobo Cats. My colony name is Children of Hisss! (I had to name and register the colony and then register as their colony caretaker to be eligible for discounted spay/neuters!), even though I hope all her children do get homes as soon as we get them semi-socialized and tutored up all proper and lady/gent like. Little bastards. They're having a blast with all the toys that Gogh Beastie and Lady Earl of Grey never play with/have kindly donated, btw. I just have to remember to bring the toys in eah night so the skunks don't haul them off. We already lost one catnip caterpillar on a ribbon that way. When the little Hissers make it into the cat room we've got set up, the real fun should begin! Well, for the kittens, anyway.

Man, my back yard is a great place to be a feral cat, ain't it?

Here, has a cat. I'm going to make a fud for myself and start working backwards to see if I can get caught up while I nom my brunch.

danceswithcrows: why someone would keep a cat outside here in Tempe where it's ~105°F in the afternoon is another question.

Some cats, for some incomprehensible reason, enjoy that kind of weather. Remember, their body temperature is higher than ours, and the species originated in Africa.

My cat really enjoyed 100 degree days back when she was an outdoor cat. She'd sleep in the shade on the deck all day. You could get her inside for about the 5 minutes it would take her to eat dinner, then she'd be back outside. In her old age, she had started to enjoy going outdoors less and less, and now she lives indoors full time in my apartment.

But if that cat's owners have a cat flap, it may just be that the cat enjoys the hot weather. Some do.

Good Morning everyone!! Looks like its going to be a pretty mild weather day here today. Time to open the windows and doors.

Wentworth had to go to the Vet last Wed. General check-up and Rabies Vac. Got him into the carrier just fine, put him in the car, and he started singing the song of his people. All. The. Way. to the Vet. Take him and the carrier out of the car, and he stops. When we get in the office and check in, he is still being very quiet. The receptionist asked me if I brought a fecal sample. Didn't know I was supposed to. Wentworth left them one before his check-up was done. LOL Anyway, Wentworth weighs 16.5#, lungs good, heart good, and good bowel sounds. HeeHee, this was before he left them his sample, in his crate. The vet still can't believe how big he is. Not weight wise, but size wise. Then she wonders why I am eager to put out $80 dollars for a bath, deshedding, nail clipping, and teeth cleaning. I'm not going to even attempt it. :) Get Wentworth back in the car, and his song begins again. All. The. Way. Home. and my Mom thinks we should just bring him with us when we go to Michigan. Not going to listen to him sing for 8+ hours. Not going to happen.

Here he is in his carrier at the Vets. I think he was trying to hide, but not doing a very good job. :)

Good morning fellow Caturdayians... I have a sad tale to tell today.

As some of you may know, I work at a drop-in for street kids. Recently one of them got her first place, and moved in with her 6month old kitten Ashes. The apartment is supported housing, built for people with mental health issues, and permits people to have small pets. However, the windows open downwards, and are only about a foot off the floor. My young client has a place on the 9th floor, and sadly on Thursday morning, she fell out the window to a concrete balcony 5 floors below. We were all in shock, and mourning, because we assumed the cat had died. The young lady's boyfriend scaled the building attempting to retrieve the cat's body, but before he reached it the security guards came and talked to him, and they decided to help him access the area that the cat fell.

Well, we were all astonished when she turned up alive. For an hour it was a carnival atmosphere in the Centre, we were all so happy that she was ok. Ashes had a little bit of trouble moving her back leg, but she wasn't crying and she seemed to be ok.

A follow up xray and vet visit yesterday afternoon told a different story - her pelvis was shattered. Poor little thing didn't even cry, didn't complain, but she was all broken up inside. The surgery was $5k to start and for a street kid, even with the help of the SPCA advocate, it was out of reach.

So here's to Ashes, a trooper to the last...

It definitely helped although I really doubt that there'll be any cuddling with Cali this week. I left one of the feather things and intend to go over tomorrow armed with several other toys. Hopefully this will help keep her amused. I'm also going to look and see if I have any batteries for my laser toy. I could sit for hours and play with her with that thing.

Poor thing. She may not be used to being left alone.

They almost never leave her alone. I have a feeling she's is going to have a tough night. The good thing is that all I have to do is walk across the alley to get to their place so even though I have a pretty busy schedule right now, I can go there several times during the day. I wish I was better with my new camera, but I'll try to get some decent pictures.

My cat Fluffy Kitty made her way to the rainbow bridge this week, after battling vaccine associated sarcoma for a few months. She was 13, and was the such a sweet cat, I will miss her. We did the best we could for her, we had her original tumor surgically removed, and the vet referred us to an veterinary oncologist, but for a 13 year old cat my mother and I decided that putting her through that would be insane. She was doing quite well until the end, but she eventually was too weak to do much besides eat and use the litter box, and after taking her back to the vet on Wednesday, it was decided that it was her time to go. Goodbye Fluffy Kitty, I will see you again some day :-(

So very sorry for your loss. I am sure that Fluffy Kitteh looks down upon you and smiles, having had such a good hooman. She will be there to greet you, rest assured. Heaven, is that state in which we once again meet those in our lives who we loved, and who loved us as well.

The first charity run for the Roar On The Shore Weekend was for the Sisters of St Joseph Homeless Shelter.
A good cause and the nuns were invited to ride along with some of the riders. I think it's a shame they don't wear the black and white anymore , cuz I think it would have looked great riding with the bikers in their old habits.
They also had a blessing of the bikes before the parade that opened the weekend. That took place in a Casino parking lot, too bad the Bingo Hall didn't have a big enough parking lot.

Does anyone have any ideas on how to deal with a calico kitten who has a huge cattitude? I had always heard how unpredictable calico's and torties are, but having one of each that are very predictable cuddle bugs I had a hard time believing it. My vet is always amazed at how Lucy and Morticia are so friendly and easy to work with. The only strange and unpredictable one around here is Juno, but that's a whole different story.

I'm taking care of my neighbor's 7 month old calico kitten and this kitten is nuts. The first couple of times I went over there (when the owners were still home), the cat would plant herself on my lap, purr and want all sorts of attention. The last couple of times she has jumped in my lap and asked for attention, the first time she hissed at me so I stopped petting her and she jumped down. The next time she jumped on my lap and asked for attention, but I wanted to see how things went so I just left her alone, she turned around hissed, bit my arm and scratched me. I played with her for quite a while before to tire her out but that didn't help. I've used soft eyes with her and she does it right back, but then she'll hiss or bite or scratch, or all three. I'm not afraid of Cali, but it's going to be a long week for both of us if this keeps up. Also she tries to get out when I open the door and I really don't want to lose this kitten. Next time I go over I'm going to take a feather on a stick toy and see if I can totally wear her out. I'm going to open the door just wide enough to put the toy in to distract her which should keep her from trying to get out. Then I'll try to get her to play until she collapses, maybe then she'll sit on my lap and want some lovin' and not attack me. If anyone else has any other suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

What a sweet, friendly and totally predictable Tortie and Calico might look like.

Jasper and Blue behind the curtains they've ruined with fur.  They like that window because it gets all the sun during the day.  Note that tubby Blue didn't even bother waking up for the picture - he stays completely out from 10am to 4pm.

Biscuit is a nimrod.

Biscuit and Mia looooove to play in the tub. Most times when I go in the bathroom one or both will come flying along hoping we'll put the faucet on a slow drip. This morning was no different.

I woke up to the alarm as usual and dragged my groggy ass into the bathroom to have a piss. Biscuit came flying in as usual, passed behind me as I stood at the toilet, and sprung into the bathtub. When he jumped into the bathtub he also sent a scrub brush crashing into the tub. The noise and sight of this horrid inanimate object freaked him out and he went flying back out of the bathroom....only this time he passed in FRONT of me.

Yes, I pissed on my cat. I got him nose to tail.

I'm not proud. As I was trying to chase him down with a wet towel my Wife was asking me what was wrong....with no time to explain before he decided to jump on the couch or something all I could say quickly was "I pissed on Biscuit!". Once she heard the whole story a good time was had by all.

He's either really insulted or thinks I've given him the ultimate token of respect. I can't tell which.
