I would sawy i grow ingredients, but I have moldy oranges, lemons and kumquats growing in the backyard. It's been raining so much that they are all splitting open.

I would love to be able to grow my own herbs, but that is impossible when your apartment is on the interior line of a 6 story building that is completely surrounded by high rises. But, when I go down to New Jersey, my friends have a massive garden that I pick from freely. Every single thing I ever pick gets used.

Growing up we used to always have swiss chard, green beans, tomatoes, and zucchini. Tried carrots and they were pathetic.

Haven't had anything like that living in apartments in heavily urban areas. Do love the fresh markets like Union Square, though.

Oh, also, we had a u-pick strawberry place not far from where I grew up. Never ever made it home with even 1/2 of what I picked.

Live on the 25th floor among a forest of other highrise condos, so unable to cultivate my own garden.  There is a permanent market about a half mile from my home and farmers bring fresh produce to stalls three times a week around the financial district downtown (also near my home), so...yeah.  Lots of fresh food.

Any sugar snap peas I pick up from the market do not make it home for cooking.  They're just too delicious a snack.

Up until a month ago, we had a permanent farmers market walking distance from here.  The owner retired.  :(

We have orange and grapefruit trees.  Those usually get squeezed for juice.

There aren't any "U pick" places around here, but there are plenty of roadside stands with cheap produce.  I try to buy from them as often as possible.

We have a farmshare, so twice a week we get their smallest box. There's only two of us

I'm in Florida - if you don't take advantage of the fresh produce available pretty much everywhere...you're an idiot.  But the oddity is...if you go to a grocery store...you get hammered on the prices.  But if you go to a farmers market/roadside stand, you get stupid awesome prices, and certainly seems like better quality. Hell...you drive far enough into central florida...there are a few abandoned/foreclosed groves...with no one tending them....great if you like citrus and stuff...at an unbeatable discount.  So I've heard.

(Coconut palms are hanging over our patio -- very excited to get bonked on the head with fresh produce very soon!)

The growing season in Canada is......not ideal. People here try to grow tomatoes every year, only to be crushed when all they get are stunted, green abominations.

Still, some things can be grown. Mostly herbs. We grow our own chives and basil.

I grow basil in my kitchen, and buy everything else from a grocery store or the farmers market when I feel like walking down there on Sunday.

Oh yeah, and we walk to the neighborhood farmer's market every Sunday and buy a metric ton of veggies and fruits, all of which get used throughout the week.

We do have several nice U-Pick places in my area, but unfortunately you need a vehicle to access them as they are all in rural areas where city buses don't go. So I rely on the Lane County Farmer's Market for buying tomatoes that taste like what tomatoes are supposed to taste like instead of the tasteless ones they sell in grocery stores.

They're also a good source for finding varieties of melons & apples that aren't sold in supermarkets, but are grown locally.

We live in an apartment, but we have a balcony / porch thing with some planter boxes... not a whole lot, but we've got yellow squash, cherry tomatoes, some colored bell pepper, jalapenos, habaneros, basil and mint this year.

The squash seem to be doing.... okay... in the box, but I'd probably wait until we've got place with a yard before trying that again.

There are a lot of PYO farms in the DFW area, but many of them require a bit of a drive to reach. I've grown beans, hot chiles and grape tomatoes in the patio with limited success. My rosemary plant is still alive somehow.

Tomatoes are a given, I've got a bunch of squash (that I hope won't get squash vine borrers, again), eggplant (only one looks good and big), celeriac, bush beans and vining beans (but those are for decoration), mint, basil, cilantro (it's bolted already) and tarragon (also bolted).  And jalapenos.

We do use local u-picks; last summer I picked rhubarb wrong (yes, you can do that),  we got 12 pounds of strawberries (and used every gott-damn pound!  WOOT!), and we did apples and beets (don't do apples at the end of the season... it's a tough pick and don't settle for the truly teensy ones).

We passed on a U-pick for cling-stone peaches last year; they're terrible to deal with and it was raining the one day that it was open to the public.  Feh.

Since spring was weird, u-picks were all over the map for the early summer stuff, so we skipped it and just opted for farmers markets.

Same deal here in California. I hadn't gone to a farmer's market here until this last Sunday. My previous experience with farmer's markets was in NYC, where everything was crazy expensive. Here it's being sold for at least half the price of groceries, and  better quality. I picked up quite a few heirloom tomatoes for $2.50/lb.

We (my wife, mostly, I have no green thumb) are growing tomatoes, corn, cucumbers, romaine lettuce, mint, some herbs i can't remember off hand and catnip (popular with our cats and neighborhood felines).  It's nice having fresh cherry tomatoes with dinner.   Most of our produce though we buy at Publix.

Pots, dude. Pots. Put little containers under them to catch the runoff water, and you can grow herbs nonstop. Basil gets ridiculous pretty quick.

This is a fun thread since this is the first year we've had a real garden.  Heads up: gardening is EXPENSIVE.  We also went out last week to NE Kansas to pick blueberries and blackberries.  We made jam and syrup, and not enough so we have to go back again this weekend :)

String beans

2 different tomatoes

No need to grow, it's so much easier to buy on the cheap in season where I live. I just got blueberries for 99 cents a pint at the farmer's market.  Anyone have a good cobbler recipe?

Herbs: Basil, chives, cilantro, oregano, parsley, thyme, mint, and dill.

Veggies: peas, pole beans, chard, garlic, onion, kale, tomatoes, eggplant, potatoes, brussel sprouts.

We tried the "3 sisters" thing this year: corn, pole beans, and squash grown together so the beans grow up the corn stalks and the squash acts as a living mulch. But the bed is too small, and the squash is taking over everything.

Google the Steve Raichlen recipe for fruit cobbler on the grill. It's easy and incredibly good.

I'm growing a bumper crop of white pumpkins.  Sweeter than butternut squash. Will sell most at market and eat all I can.

Subby brings back memories.

I live in Colorado  now so not so good on the u pick stuff.

Growing up in the PNW we did huckleberries, strawberries in Spokane, (amazing strawberries), peaches, apples and corn.

Now at home I'm doing strawberries, tomatoes and herbs.  Some chiles as well.

NOthing like a fresh strawberry. The store crap is awful.  No matter how red or big they are, they taste like shiat.

Not much grown on our north-facing balcony (green beans, berries) but we've been going picking at one of the local schools every few days. Lots of black raspberries, and now that they're almost done the wineberries are opening and the blackberries are ripening. We also split a farmshare with one of my fiancee's friends, so we have plenty of veggies, almost too much.

I grow Dill.  Absolutely essential to have fresh dill for fish.  I also grow pepermint.... for my Blueberry ice-cream...  I have many other things I grow here at home, but these are the two that I find really make an impact.

Snohomish county (north of Seattle) is fantastic for locally grown crops and farmers markets. We can U-pick  almost any kind of berry (especially blueberries and strawberries). Farmers markets are currently full of asparagus, rhubarb, greens, and other tasty stuff. We belong to a CSA where we get weekly shares, and (after a few years work) we now use almost all of it before it goes bad. There is no comparison to grocery store produce.

we were in Legoland CA last week, and juuuuuuuuuuust outside and down the way of the entrance, there's a "U-Pick" strawberry patch.  We got about, ehhhh, 8-10lbs and they were fantastic.  extremely juicy.  the store bought, we learned, are way larger and more symmetrical/visually appealing, but the ones we had were way more intense in taste, although smaller and lumpier.  phenomenal.

we just moved so we haven't got our garden up and running, but my wife is good for cucumbers, various squash, tomatoes, and all kinds of crazy herbs.  i've never tried to grow anything but she' sreally good at it.  one year i think okra?

oh and we had wild chilis pop up one year.

Indeed, my sis lived up there. Amazing produce from that land/soil up there.

Out of curiosity, what is expensive about gardening?  Renting a tiller is less than $30.  Seeds are about a dollar per packet, and you'd get hundreds of *whatever* per packet.  Tomato seedlings are about $250 for a 3-pack.  I spend about $50 on the garden every Spring and get about a thousand dollars worth of produce that I preserve and eat year round.

I did raspberries, blueberries, peaches, strawberries, and blackberries already this year. Apples next!

As far as grow-your-own, I must have tomatoes on my patio or at a nearby farmer's market. www.rareseeds.com is my source for really interesting varieties.

I currently have three kinds of tomatoes, cucumbers, leaf lettuce, potatoes, dill, and basil growing in pots. Oh, and don't forget the catnip. Sadly, the cilantro succumbed to heat stroke a couple of weeks ago and I'll be surprised if the cukes don't follow (and I'm completely amazed the lettuce is still trying).

we grow tons of stuff, man; we start them inside in January and then move everything out after last frost.

Mega lettuces, radishes, corn, tomatoes, cucumber, squash, all sorts of herbs, beets, etc.

You bring the beer and you can harvest a bag of fresh veggies. :)

Squash will do that.  One year we had some squash that took over two 4'x8' beds, and the path in between.
