Why is that even a cop's job in the first place?

The whole 'inspect and document the tattoos' thing seems legit.  Just treated them as if they were under arrest.

It's been about 15 yrs ago, but my brother was volunteering to teach photography to teen drop-outs in the New Orleans area.  (They called the place the "Drop In" center and tried to reach out to troubled and homeless youth in N.O., which had more than its share at the time.)  My brother was a Vietnam Vet (Marine Corps) and a liberal.

He had developed a very good level of trust and rapport with a number of the teens and one day a couple of the girls came to him and told him that they were being raped, pimped out and forced to work in a strip club.  My brother knew that in order to work at a strip club, they had to have a police issued license on them at all times and that it was damned near impossible to secure a phony license. Basically the only way you could get one was to go through the Police Dept process, with photo ID, birth certificate, finger prints, etc or someone inside the police dept helping with the scam.  When questioned, the girls said the licenses were "legit" in that they were issued by the N.O. Police Dept, but the information was phony.  When he investigated it a bit further, he found out the girls "pimps" were actually 3 ranking N.O. police officers who had a whole crew of strippers and hookers working for them. (Some of them as young as 15.)

He wrote an article about it (under a pseudonym) , which got published in the City's "alternative" newspaper.  It caught the attention of the community and the mainstream press actually picked up on it for a while.  The crazy thing was the attention was more about who wrote the article (speculation abounded, that it was a former/current cop/politician) rather than the content.

If you don't think these cops had their hands out for freebies or pay-offs from the dancers, the club owners, the patrons, etc. you are beyond naive.  If the club was only paying off with free drinks and lap dances, they were lucky.

Good on him.  I hope (though I know it's probably unlikely) that the cops involved got slammed for that stuff.

/grew up in my father's strip club, yes really
//he was a good man, very protective of the girls in a positive, paternal way

I just realized this post is a violation of the rule about mentioning farkers in threads they haven't posted in and could conceivably be a violation of the rule about posting personal information about others, although he revealed that himself. No, I don't have a link. It was a long time ago.

Sorry.

What's new is that the dancers have actually filed suit.

The cops have a real hardon to bust that club, it's the same one that was busted about ten years back by the FBI. The owners(out of Vegas) were bribing three of our city councilmen to prevent/repeal a "no touching the dancers" ordinance.

I hope the dancers win their case, no way the cops needed to send ten cops to do a job one pervy pig could have done all by his sweaty lonesome.

If these cops were photographing the girls " under color of law " and the girls win their case in court,  the cops could then be prosecuted for their crimes.
The officers would have to be fired and would be required to register as " sex offenders ".
Sounds like a suitable punishment for taking advantage of your position of power.

Aggression toward the social underclass is a very important component of right wing authoritarianism.

They believe they have found a legally acceptable way to express that aggression, so they do it.

It's like a lot of stuff cops do when they get stupid.  The attitude is "What are they going to do? Sue us?"  Every so often someone does, and the stuff is indeed stupid.

When I was living in Hoboken, the local cops worked out the following scheme.  Officers get paid more to serve on squad with special training, so they started a SWAT team.  The county already has a SWAT team that covers this jurisdiction, but whatever.  To get on the SWAT team, you had to kick back part of your pay bump to the lieutenant, and apparently part of that went into a slush fund that the chief may or may not have had access to.

If it had been left at that, no one would have been the wiser.

But as it turns out, the lieutenant was something of an arrogant prick and made a bunch of racial remarks to a couple of Hispanic guys on the force.  What were they going to do?  Sue him?  They did and it busted the whole thing wide open.

If you want to check out any of this, google "Hoboken Cops Hooters."  Yes, Hooters.  Apparently these idiots went down to New Orleans to "help out" after Hurricane Katrina.  But no one asked for their help, so the local PD told them to go home.  Instead they hung out at Hooters, passed out their assault weapons to the waitresses, and took a bunch of pictures.  One of the less idiotic photos is in this NYT article:

http://www.nytimes.com/2007/11/17/nyregion/17cops.html?_r=0

Why are they paying cops to do this? There are lots of us that would do it for free.

Gyrfalcon: Not only are strippers hot, they're amazing people to talk to.

I feel bad for strippers (and prostitutes); for most it's not glamorous or horrifying, but it's a dead-end job where your boss and customers all see you as a piece of meat to be squeezed and taken advantage of. The only thing more dehumanizing is probably working at McDonald's unless you have an extreme aversion to taking your clothes off, in which case you reek of desperation. I'm in a pretty dead-end job and hoping to change careers, I know how that feels. I've had lonely strippers just come over for conversation. I've had entertaining ones ready to paint the town red and talk about their travels. I've had druggies hit me up, and I haven't even been to many clubs. They're blue collar workers, and a lot of them would be glad if you paid your moneys and went home so they could be with their actual friends and family, instead of the ones paying them to be friends.

It's a shiatty job in a world full of shiatty jobs, the female equivalent to working graveyard in a small town factory that's slowly poisoning you.

Maybe I'm just a bit too jaded to really get excited over that stuff anymore.
