The family of evangelical Christians that owns the Hobby Lobby chain of crafts supply stores is planning a sprawling, $800 million "Bible museum" in the nation's capital

"There are lessons from the past that we can learn from, the dangers of ignorance of this book. We need to know it. If we don't know it, our future is going to be very scary."

Yes, yes, please tell us all about all the lessons you learned from the Bible. Especially the ones about how the greediest and richest people will be first in line for heaven.

I am curious if this will be an actual Biblical museum that has discussions and exhibits regarding the history of the Bible, which books were included or excluded and why, how things may have been lost in translation, etc. Or whether it will be a way to charge money to be proselytized at like Ken Ham's creation museum.

I have to agree, the bible does belong in a museum.

$800 million for Bible museum? Ha. We Catholics call that "the Vatican" and it's got better art work.

I'm going to make a Fallout 3 mod of this place and have it be a house of horrors.

Will they cover the part regarding if your virgin daughter is raped, she has to marry the rapist and you receive 50 shekels?

2014-07-17 12:22:29 PM
I'm still trying to get my head around the $800 million figure. That museum better have some awesome rides.

That doesn't really count since it's not in America. Who wants to go all the way to France just to see some old paintings?

Maybe $800mill is the markup after they receive everything from the Chinese factories.

2014-07-17 12:47:49 PM
I wonder if it covers how the Bible has changed over the years?

2014-07-17 12:50:56 PM
The Green family pled before the Court that providing such coverage to women would violate the family's freedom to practice the Christian faith as protected under the First Amendment.

How come they keep getting this part wrong.  They weren't claiming a violation of the First Amendment.  They were claiming protection under the Schumer-Pelosi Religious Freedom Restoration Act, signed by Bill Clinton.

I hope the museum includes a huge needle for rich Christians to walk their camels through.

I hear they're going to remodel the outside in the shape of a giant calf painted gold.

Assuming $775 million of that will to be create a non-profit advisory board made up entirely of the family.

For $800 million, they'd better include limo service to and from this place.

Okay, folks, stop right there.

Before you build your monstrosity.. read it yourself.. since you don't seem to have done that.

As a fun bonus, not only does the Vatican take the position that Young Earth Creationism and Intelligent Design are crap, the same people who back Hobby Lobby also think that Catholics are false idolitors that are the direct spawn of Satan.

I really do have a hard time reconciling the fact that there are these people out there who are, at one moment, in a board room running a successful, modern business within the demands of 21st century thinking and then, the next moment, are in a bible study telling kids they should be learning how to live and act based on what a couple of Roman goat herders transcribed from neolithic shamanism to explain why the sky lights up in the morning.

Maybe that's the point. Trip up the kids early with enough bullshiat to keep them from ever being smart enough to become the competition...

Another reason to not use the Federal Center Metro station.

2014-07-17 01:26:43 PM
Good. This is one of the most benign ways these people could blow $800 million bucks in the name of their religion.

2014-07-17 01:27:50 PM
Anyone want to form a bible destroying superpac? Not just bibles, any abrahamic holy book. We get funding, collect them, and publicly burn them and email the youtube videos to fox news. We can also use funding to buy derelict churches and burn them too.

Who in America doesn't want to see a giant pile of bibles, mormony books, torahs, korans and limbaugh books go up in flames?

Mr. Coffee Nerves: Assuming $775 million of that will to be create a non-profit advisory board made up entirely of the family.

I assumed $775M will be going to start a lobbying (ha) firm that will try to shift the idea from "here's our museum" to "bible museum in DC means America loves bible". It's how religion gains power. It co-opts and associates with unrelated things, then claims ownership. And that's when the  cleansing begins.

2014-07-17 01:30:05 PM
Maybe the museum can explain about their closely held religious beliefs.  You know, the ones that means their female employee's don't get those certain kinds of contraception.  The same kinds that they invested in for their 401K.  Different from the Viagra/boner bills that are okay to be in their insurance.  Also, why contraception is bad, but buying goods from China, the land of government forced abortions, seems to be a good business practice for stoic Christians.

2014-07-17 01:30:46 PM
drives me crazy that these people are incapable of acknowledging that there are Americans that don't subscribe to their religious beliefs or that religion has absolutely no bearing on or in reality.

show me proof that ghosts exist & i might reconsider, although you would also have to prove even further that those ghosts we omniscient and omnipotent.

The $800 million is for a needle with an eye large enough to drive a Hoveround through.

Blues_X: Nabb1: I'm still trying to get my head around the $800 million figure. That museum better have some awesome rides.

I caught a different article on it that broke down that number a bit. Purchase price for the abandoned building itself was $50 mil. Something like $200 million is going to gut and rennovate it. The cost of the collection itself was about $30 million over the past 5 years, but has been valued currently at "hundreds of millions." And the $800 million figure also includes a (probably inflated) value of the underlying real estate once the project is finished.

Still an obscene amount of money for a vanity project, but there you go.

Our $800m D.C. Bible museum will

thankfully go down like a freaking lead balloon

THANK YOU JESUS

I'm not into that whole "book burning" thing, but let us all know how that works out for you. Poorly, I hope.

"This nation is in danger because of its ignorance of what God has taught," he said in a 2013 speech. "There are lessons from the past that we can learn from, the dangers of ignorance of this book. We need to know it. If we don't know it, our future is going to be very scary."

This is a repeat.

These people think The Bible - still the most popular book in the world, available in every bookstore and every damn language there is (including the silly ones), stashed in hotel dressers JUST IN CASE, which every political leader claims as the most important book they've read (including - believe her nor not - Hillary Clinton), and is the basis for every non-Randian move the GOP makes - isn't well-known enough among Americans?

If that's the case, it's because your ilk have so polluted its message that no one wants to read it anymore. Hell, just watch Fox News for a day and you'll hear the salient points - no socialisms, hate the gays, tax cuts, rich folks are just better, women should shut up and make sandwiches/babies...oh, and shellfish are OK because Jesus says we don't have to read Part 1 anymore. And libs are dumb.

// how about they build it on the future site where Noah's Ark is being rebuilt?
// that lan'd no longer in development, from what I hear...

Be aware that if you look back when done with the homosexual agenda exhibit you will blasted with salt.

Maybe just go to church? No public school is ever going to have a field day at this place, and the only people that will go that aren't already in to genocide fanfic will be Satanists looking to take funny pictures. Not so sure what we're being saved from.
