Who the hell is Valerie Macon?

That's what poets in North Carolina are asking this week after Gov. Pat McCrory Typically, the North Carolina Arts Council handles the selection of a new laureate. They solicit nominations, convene a selection committee to review the poets against the position's guidelines and recommend a finalist to the Governor, who announces the new laureate.

But McCrory   Ignoring the NCAC's process, he simply issued a Friday-afternoon  that Macon was in. The governor didn't even bother to thank outgoing laureate ,  who has done exemplary education and outreach work around the state since 2012.

Well, at least McCrory didn't slash Bathanti's tires.

http://www.indyweek.com/artery/archives/2014/07/16/opinion-mccrorys- me an-joke-a-poet-laureate-whos-barely-a-poet?utm_content=bufferce344&utm _medium=social&utm_source=facebook.com&utm_campaign=buffer

This is just a set up to defund the whole thing two years from now when it fails to do ...... well anything.

When do they change the name to Best Carolina?

It is the way they seem to be energizing the damn base down here.  They openly and publicly shat on and pee in the faces of anyone or anything that can be considered in anyway liberal and liberal means anything not at home with our version of the national socialist and der Fuhrer.

Yeah, I know I just Godwin'ed the hell out of this right out of the gate but damn I am hard pressed for a better example.  Seriously, I have seen way to many discussions now where people talk way to comfortably about how it would be a much better place if liberals were just made to go away.  The fact that the areas deemed to be the state's liberal mecca's also just happen to be the areas where we have a functioning economy -- be damned.

Yeah, I am pissed because I have watched my state that was ready to lead the nation in the 21st century economies, suddenly and with premeditation begin the journey back to backwardness.  Jesus wept.

According to NPR, the new poet laureate is a registered Republican.

But I'm sure that had NOTHING to do with the Governor's decision.

This is news because its another example of McCrory going out of his way to piss on anything he perceives as liberal. Either that or he doesn't understand that "laureate" means more than winning an honorable mention in an amateur poetry contest
.
What he really doesn't understand, though, is the extent to which he's damaging the NC business community. Everything he's done with the legislature, from making sure we're 49th in teacher pay to showing disrespect to academic, literary, and scientific achievements reinforces the outside perception of NC as a state of backward, illiterate racists. Not only does this image prevent new business from coming to NC, but, as in my case, its a major impediment to high tech sales as it gets harder and harder to convince customers there is anyone with skills left in the state.

I was just trying to tell people the other day that I may have to face the possibility that I may have to move for my career in the coming years.  I am a developer and the jobs will leave.  I worked in and around NYC at the beginning of my career and now back in the RTP in NC.  We have had a strong IT presence here for a good while... heck SaS is just across the street from my office but.... these jobs will begin to dry up.  Since I don't want to shovel shat for minimum wage, then I will be forced to move possibly before the end of my career.  That would have seemed incredible to me, even after the great recession.  Now it seems inevitable.

Governor McCrory is just showing he can get things done and make tough decisions, like the very first official one he made, giving raises to all the cronies who helped him on his election campaign.

It's not as bad as Vogon poetry, but it's not good.

Although if there were any Vogons, I'm sure McCrory would have given them the poet laureate spot (sadly).

I did enjoy this part:

"I don't think McCrory has a clue. But what's clear is he knows he doesn't have to have a clue, just be governor."

Sums up the Republican approach to governance very nicely.

That's what they say, but it just isn't true.
Roses are red, and apples are too.
But violets are violet. Violets aren't blue.
An orange is orange, but Greenland's not green.
A pinky's not pink, so what does it mean?
To call something blue when it's not, we defile it.
But aww, what the heck? It's hard to rhyme "violet."

Living here in NC and watching the State implode during the last few years of TEA GOP administration, I'm no fan of McCrory.  On this issue, though, I don't see a partisan agenda or McCrory "sticking it to the libs".  This sounds like one of any number of forms in a big pile in his lap while sitting on the can with Duke Energy on cell phone A in his left ear, and Tom Tillis on cell phone B in his right ear.  Sorry, folks-the arts and humanities hold an important place in public life, but choosing the "poet laureate" is right up there with "which rubbery BBQ dinner am I going to for brunch/lunch/dinner today?" and "which group of boy scouts/girl scouts/basketball team/football team/veteran's group/Shriners are they going to be marching through my office between 9:23 and 9:30 a.m.?"

I don't see anyone suggesting it's a partisan agenda. I do see a lot of people questioning the wisdom behind appointing an amateur to a position of high esteem within the literary community.

The nail in the coffin for me is the state legislature removing the ability of local municipalities to raise money.  Early this year they passed a bill making the maximum a city could charge a business for taxes $100 regardless of the size of the business, which is going to take millions out of local governments in the next fiscal year.

In Chapel Hill, we've dodged the severe cuts to education by maintaining a separate local tax that goes 100% to schools, enabling us to raise salaries, hire teachers aides, pay for arts and music, etc. The latest version of the budget contains a measure to make such local taxes illegal, which would cut 40% or so from our school budget.
