Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev in televised remarks said the sanctions are throwing Russia's relations with the West "back to the 1980s" and added that Russia "will have to pay more attention to military and security spending."

How did that work out for you in the 80's?

I for one support going back to having Russia as our main antagonist so we can have proper villains in our movies like we did in the 80s. Having North Koreans and Mid-East terrorist as the bad guys has sucked. Mid-east terrorist were better than Koreans (though never as good as Ruskies) but now we can´t even do that because it is considered un-PC and racist. But Ruskies are both white and evil... which means we can have them do all sorts of horrible things on screen and no one will complain.

This is hilarious.  They're threatening that Russia "will have to pay more attention to military and security spending."

Yeah, like you guys have the money to spend on your military at this point.

Pooty Tang picked a fight, acted like it was 1930 again and conquered the Crimea and is now shocked and angered and upset that the world is using 2014 economic warfare to punish them for it.

'This' is why a global economy discourages open warfare like what the Russians did.  An interconnected world can fark your economy up if you step over global lines, and in a hurry.

And now the Russians are leading the charge toward a global economy that isn't lead by the Americans.  Putting together a new anti-NATO league and even trying to create a rival bank to the World Bank and IMF.

This is more accurate than most would believe.  Granted, Russia slapped first with the claiming of Crimea, but that was all the excuse that the EU and the US needed to neuter Russia on a global scale, especially in Europe, both East and West.  And believe me, they're taking full advantage of Russia's aggression.  NATO's been desperate for a reason to remain relevant in 2014 and Russia, like an idiot, gave them that relevance on a silver platter.

Putin warned Washington that the sanctions will backfire against American companies working in Russia.

That's a feature, not a bug.  Washington wants to scare American companies out of Russia.  It wants to scare every company out of Russia.  Threatening American companies plays into Washington's hands.

I thought this guy was supposed to be some brilliant chessmaster running circles around the stupid Americans.

PS. Isn't there a chance that Ukraine shot it down though? Maybe they were trying to fire at the ruskie plane that shot at their plane and shiat just got out of hand.

Unlikely.  Ukraine has zero motivation for shooting down Russian property while they're getting so much good press for being the victim in all this, and you can be 'damned' sure that the Ukraine has standing orders to get authority before shooting 'anything' down.

Russian rebels, on the other hand....

That's one scenario nobody has suggested yet. The downing of the fighter was long before the jet crash, so it seems unlikely. But at this point, who knows what really happened. Here's the NY Times story:

But if the plan was flying at 30K feet... don't you need better hardware than shoulder fired surface to air? Do the rebels have that capability? they've denied having it... but isn't that easy to determine... the surface to air battery they'd need would be kinda of a bulky item. The suspects would seem to be the actual Russians and Ukrainians and not the rebels, right?

Now we're dipping into actual assumption and presumption.  Let's wait for more details before we start guessing as to what was used to actually down the thing.

Having Norks as the enemy in the remake of Red Dawn made the whole premise suck. How the hell are the Norks gonna transport and supply an army an ocean away? Even the Chinese can't do that yet.

If I remember correctly, the movie was originally supposed to have the Chinese as the invading army, but then they realized that such a movie would bomb if they tried to release it in China, so they digitally edited it to replace all references to China with references to North Korea.  Which made the movie less offensive to Chinese viewers, but made the whole premise even more absurd.

Frankly, even with the Soviets as the bad guys, the premise is ridiculous.  The Soviets may have had the technology to drop a bunch of nuclear bombs on the U.S. (albeit not without them getting nuked themselves soon after), but there's no way they could have transported and supplied an army capable of invading the U.S. mainland.

Putin just committed an act of war against every country that lost a citizen in that crash. The whole reason for enduring a decade of "security" at the airport is so some asshole doesn't try to drop your plane. IMHO.

Well... in the original, Mexico had fallen to a communist revolution and the Russian and Cuban forces used it as a base to attack the U.S. The whole thing was far-fetched but it had some sense to it. Basically it was a domino theory scenario.
