Sony PR:
-PlayStation 4 was #1 in sales for the sixth consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles.
-PlayStation 4 was #1 for next generation software sales, with PS4 leading two of the top three titles.
-PlayStation was #1 in combined home console hardware sales (PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 3) for the month.
-The biggest next generation software titles, including Watch_Dogs, UFC and FIFA 14, were #1 on PlayStation 4, further demonstrating that PS4 is the platform of choice for blockbuster games.

MS IMO really needs to go hard beefing up their studios and investing in new IP's.  I don't think milking the Halo/Forza/Gears thing is going to work as well as it did in the past.  Sunset Overdrive is a good start, but the more the better.

The problem with cash cows is they tend to get milked long after they're dead.  See Final Fantasy for more on this.

Live by chasing COD, die by chasing COD.  COD players aren't going anywhere, and the "COD killer" will not be seen before it does the deed, it'll happen organically.  Just look at what happened to Titanfall, or all the PS3 "COD killers" last  gen; all forgotten.

Honestly, having played the Destiny Alpha I think it has a good chance of being it.  It's also nothing like COD nor is it trying to be a COD killer.  It's just damn good fun.

i've heard some mixed reviews on it, though generally on the good side of 'mixed'. not like the mixed reviews of elder scrolls online which should have been strangled at birth

knowing nothing about it i've heard people describe it as borderlands: the mmo, but i was never really a fan of borderlands so

It's really borderlands + halo + mass effect + guild wars 1.  The alpha was really quite fun, looking forward to spending some time with the beta as well.

It's really hard to describe other than they pulled off merging several different genres into a beautiful looking and seamless game that feels very much like Halo's true evolution.

Gunplay feel is very Halo-ish, while the open nature, coop strike missions, hubs and loot are very Borderlandish.  That said, it's not as incremental loot crazy, which always put me off in borderlands.  You're not getting gun drops every 3rd shot that really make you question your loadouts over micro %'s and in the end were worthless.  The leveling has some aRPG elements to it, and I guess you can call the hub areas and seamless COOP / world events MMO-ish.  Loading is cleverly hidden with space or on foot travel, with space travel using cosmetic loadouts that basically just pimp you're spaceship avatar over the other players you see traveling with you.  It's a nice way to hide a loading screen when jumping into MP.

All in all, play it with a couple of good friends and you'll be a true believer.  Solo might be a harder sell, but theres systems in there to make finding randoms when needed very easy.  In game world/fireteam/party/friends system is the best on a console yet IMO

Now that you can get it without the Kinect, I may start considering buying one. That crap may be good for the younger crowd, but as an older adult gamer, I have no interest in standing in front of my TV jumping around like an idiot, nor do I want to be talking to may game as I play.

WTF is a 'manshoots'?

Is this 'I'm too cool' hipster posturing 'I'm going to call a FPS something no one else does to be edgy' bullshiat? Considering it's from Tardythetroll here, I'll assume so?

I googled it, and the only places I see it used are Rock, Paper, Shotgun, and other tiresome websites who think they're entirely too 'brilliant' for us all.  It smells of Reddit and 4chan.

drjekel_mrhyde: Subby should check PS4 sale in Japan

Given the story is about US sales, I don't see why.

And yes, ps4 is selling very low in japan right now, about 7-8k a week.  There seems to be an utter lack of japanese games, and well, the console market in general seems to be tanking over there.  Sales in Europe and the americas is fine though, selling pretty high.

huh, i always just kind of assumed the playstation would be kind of a big deal over there

i wonder if that's because they're shifting markets or if it's more an issue with a short library with mostly cross-generation games that'll rectify itself in time

Overall console sales have been pretty much on a downturn there the last few years, even on major release weeks.  Mobile is moving 2-3 times as many units, and seemingly, far more units of games.

Things might change once major japanese games come out, but so far, it's not a pretty sight.

To be fair, the FPS genre has gotten pretty stale the last few years.  Many of the military fps games have a very 'same old same old' feel to them.  Of all the mainstream genres, I think it's the most in need of some fresh ideas and concepts.

AdamK: Antimatter: Jim from Saint Paul: AdamK: Jaden Smith First of His Name: Are there any good games out for either system by now?

depends on whether you download games or only buy physical... if you only buy physical and ignore small downloadable games you might get easily bored

Read: No great PS4/XboxOne AAA exclusive titles yet, no.

Most every game they pimp they made a 360/PS3 version that doesn't work functionally different (it just looks better on the new systems).

That'll change over time. New Assains Creed and Batman: Akrham Knight come to mind as new console exclusives I am personally excited for.

It's the problem of cross-gen development.  Devs tend to like doing that the first year or so as the userbases build.  There are a lot of xb1/ps4/pc only games in the pipeline though, some come out this fall.

it's a cycle that happens with every console launch: 1-2 months you get a slew of forgettable average titles with a couple gems, 3-4 months you get a couple of interesting titles if not mindblowing, months 5-10 it's an anguishing drought where you ask why you ever bought the thing, months 11-24 you get a tidal wave of system sellers, and then you get another drought, followed by a late tidal wave before you start hearing about the next round of consoles

That's why my general rule of thumb is to get the new consoles the holiday season after launch. For the PS4, I'm going for the Uncharted 4 bundle if that hits holiday this year. You also get a lot of discounted first round games then, so you can get a lot of content cheap.

Japan no longer matters in the grand scheme of thing sales-wise. The North American and European markets have grown too big and with China coming up, Japan is just a small island of old, racists xenophobes and perverts.  I'm sure the dating sims will still sell there, because it is Japan.

i don't even really have a problem with manshoots - wolfenstein didn't really do anything new, it just did it with a real love for the genre and some pretty clever design decisions. it was a world of difference in feel from like bioshock, cod, or dishonored, when the relevant elements of each were pretty similar. and i loved modern warfare 1, even though the later games in the series (and offshoots) weren't that much different. it's more an issue of disliking the incredibly factory stamped production sucking the engagement out the genre.

UGH I'd buried that little bit of mental abuse and now it's bubbling back again. I doubt it's any easier on the console.

Yes, I punched the box. Now something is trying to get in and I have to slide under it somehow.  I'm sure that is easy to do on a console using a controller but the keys mapping on the PC is farked. It's a timed sequence so if you don't get under, then it stops the level, reloads then forces you to do it over again.

I hate canned movies with press 'A' sequences that try to pass as game play.

if it's the part where there's the monster robot dog trying to get in and you need to get to the machine gun to dogshoots, you dive in the water in the back of the plane. you don't run over land or slide under the dog, you just swim and follow the underwater lights that happen to lead you right to the gun you want and then blow them away

there are a few places later in the game where it kind of makes you do a slide, which i think is done by sprinting and then hitting crouch, but there wasn't one of those in the early plane bit
