A temporary cease-fire in the conflict between Hamas and Israel expired Thursday, followed quickly by a rocket attack from Gaza and a reported Israeli military strike.

They just made it more temporary, that's all.

Two groups of assholes in power have incentive to continue endless hostilities. This whole situation will only end when the powers that be finally push too hard and regular people come together and choose peace despite the cries of their leaders to perpetuate war.

Have you seen the conditions the Palestinians are forced to live under?  Random checkpoints, often closed for no reason blocking every city off from other cities, it's disgusting.  I'd be pissed too.  I can't find it in me to root for either side, I wish the refs would just call the game.

And yet, they couldn't even go for 5 hours.

I didn't really expect Hamas to have centralized control over all of their crazies, but saying "hey, could you chill out for 5 hour, like, take a nap or something so we can get medical supplies that might save your life later?" I am a little surprised they couldn't wait 5 hours.

Because it's being imposed on them by an occupying force.  It's not difficult to see why they're pissed, nor is it difficult to see why Israel is pissed given the rocket attacks and the years of suicide bombings (though it's been awhile since one of those happened).

The Palestinians in Gaza are like an animal in a cage. Israel keeps it locked up, beats it, restricts movement, and denies it food and water. Sometimes this animal bites back, which Israel uses as proof that it is dangerous and thus deserving of another beating.

There can be no reconciliation between the two. Too many old wounds, and too many new wounds. Israel cannot bring itself to simply kill the prisoner and be done with it, hoping instead it will just die on its own. But it wont die. It's getting bigger, and the only way there will be peace is when one side has the power and fortitude to destroy the other, root and branch.

This whole situation is just tragic and awful. I just hope the US can limit its involvement as much as possible.

While there's *some* truth to this, an honest drawing would (a) have the Palestinian building locked up in concertina wire on a piece of ground much too small for its footprint and (b) the Israeli response would be represented by a hundred bombs delivered by artillery, airplanes, and naval bombardment.

I recognize the Palestinian provocation and the bias of some media reports, but let's not paint the Israelis as mild innocents here. Hamas would wither away if Israel stopped creating widows and orphans and started helping Palestine build a modern country.

There are a number of places in the Middle East where conditions are bad.  And of course the places that are in the middle of a war are by definition hell holes.

But the treatment of the Palestinians by the Israelis--even during "peace" times--is among the worst oppression of anyone on Earth.

A cease-fire is bad for business. Hamas is pressing for continued relevance, and Israel is delivering it to them one payload at a time.

At least 230 Palestinians have been killed and close to 1,700 have been injured since Israel began its anti-Hamas military operation July 7, according to Palestinian health officials.
One Israeli death has been reported.

And Northern Ireland has been such a model of European tolerance and lack of repression for so long.

/just saying, let's not paint this as "an Arab thing"
//like N.I., it's more of a "continued consequences of colonialism..." including having drawing "national" borders designed to retard the natural development of the region by keeping the natives fighting among themselves

A temporary cease-fire between Hamas and Israel expired Thursday, followed quickly by new rocket attacks from Gaza and a resumption of Israeli military airstrikes. Two Palestinians were injured in one of the Israeli airstrikes, which came after a five-hour lull requested by the United Nations for humanitarian reasons.

I get the point of that joke.  But that last box in the toon should show that the Israeli rocket blasted the crap out of whatever it hit.  All 3 of the rockets in all 3 of the Hamas attacks were shot out of the sky, and there was no damage.
As of the news last night, the score so far is like 120/1 dead.

Israel is clearly in the winning position.

Not for nothing, but Israel did self-impose a 6-hour cease-fire yesterday morning (Israel time) while waiting for Hamas to accept the Egyptian proposal. During which time, Hamas fired something like 47 rockets.

Egypt is getting pretty tired of Hamas' shiat as well (which is why they keep Rafah closed), so that deal might have been a bad one - but Israel said "we're taking 6 hours off for y'all to deliberate" and Hamas said "OK, have some rockets".

I read a great article yesterday - I disagreed with many of the assertions, but the one that resonated was "The morality is in Israel's favor rather than Hamas', but the power is as well." Israel has more of a responsibility - as a larger, better-established, more capable country - to restrain itself and act deliberately. This doesn't absolve Hamas, not at all; but it does throw into better relief why I can't fully support Israel.

// my OP was cynicism mixed with depression
// I also had an interesting thought about the generational shift in Israel, but I'll save that for another time
