(NBC News)   Is crowdfunding making us more generous, or is it just a way for us to throw a couple dollars at something so we feel good about ourselves?   (nbcnews.com) divider line 74

Anyone else think it's weird that Fark has no breaking news about a plane getting shot out of the sky over the Ukraine?

Who cares? I donate generously to the local food banks and hell yes it makes me feel better about myself. So?

It's a fine way for businesses to get all of the benefit of public investment but not have to adhere to any regulatory agency like the SEC.

gofundme is an annoying hangout for internet grifters. shiat keeps showing up in my facebook feed, people sharing other people's requests for money to get gender reassignment surgery, etc- when did it become acceptable for people to just openly beg for money?

Its a way to help see stuff we want to happen, happen. Nothing wrong with that.

I like the fact that I can pick out the ones that have very concrete proposals. Of course, there's still a lot of "give us your money and we'll do something with it", but I can quickly filter those out. If it's something I can believe, it's more likely to get a donation.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with giving to charity because it makes you feel good.

It's a way to get money out of idiots that want to be part of some stupid 'viral' crap. Like the idiots that gave that guy $50K for farking potato salad. Or the people in the farkus tab who claim to be "artists" but really just don't want to get jobs.

I have a dear friend who suffers from idiopathic scrotaroma. I want to start a research project to find a cure for this horrible disease. Would two or three million of you please go to StartSomeGood and donate a few dollars to this worthy cause? Your kindness will never be forgotten. Thank you in advance.

All charity giving is about feeling better about yourself, isn't it? Online crowdfunding just makes it easier and more convenient to do.

Or is that the point of the article?

This is the important, pressing question of our time.

So long as it separates people from their money.

So where do I go to raise $75,000 to purchase and restore the 15 acre scrap pile next to my home? The county has foreclosed on it for back taxes, and just about nobody besides me is ready and willing to take on the job of restoring the property to its former beauty.

crowdsourcing is dumb.  i want a share if i'm funding something.  and lacking that i want it to be tax-deductable.

I spent $150 to get a  hoodie from Don Cheadle. And to also help fund a movie about some trumpet guy. I want to see the movie made, but it was mostly for the $8 wholesale hoodie.

When you get charged, the charge says "Amazon.com Services" and has a lot of numbers before and after that part. If you don't remember that you did a kickstarter, you wouldn't be able to tell what the charge was for just from looking at it.

It's a couple bucks more than they would have given away otherwise, so it's still a positive increase to net generosity, even if they are doing it for ego masturbation.

Adverse possession time?

I think the internet and online paying has helped lower the barriers that some people face, making it easy and seamless to give on a compulsion or whim.

It also helps that lots of crowdfunding stuff offers the promise of rewards or some kind of benefit for your donation, so there's also a more concrete promise of getting something for yourself.

/never crowdfunded anything because I'm poor, but been tempted by the RiffTrax ones

Haven't been there quite long enough, but that was an examined option.
