You rarely get a long but determinate suspension for being a bad driver. You get a long but determinate suspension because driving under suspension results in a longer suspension.

Michigan made tens of millions on paper by charging a new tax on license points. The legislature this year finally admitted that money was uncollectable. People who couldn't afford to pay tickets couldn't afford to pay the extra fee for driving with a license suspended for unpaid tickets. The fee only guaranteed they would never get their license back.

Where I live the only mandatory lifetime suspensions are

1. Motor vehicle homicide after a prior offense of motor vehicle homicide or DUI. (Homicide means being at fault in a fatal accident; it doesn't require reckless driving like in most states.)

2. Fifth offense DUI.

"A  Botany Bay highway patrol officer had twice seen Barker fail to use his indicator when he was turning and pulled him over. "

There's your problem right there, your average Botany Bay pensioner is a scoff law.

Guess we'll have to wait for Admiral Kirk to issue his new license.

I have an acquaintance that should get this for his continuous drunk driving though he only has one offence for that,  and a close relative that needs this for his bad eyes, diabetes that he doesn't manage correctly and his general stupidity.  Get bad drivers off the road.  Poor drivers are kinda ok.  Bad drivers need to GTFO.

I should also say neither of these guys will be alive in 2090.

"Pedestrian Council of Australia chairman Harold Scruby said police should be given the power to confiscate cars and numberplates from those driving while disqualified."

I'm pretty sure you can do this where I am.  They can also do it if you're 40+ kph over the speed limit and if you blow over 0.05.

The article doesn't mention the original reason for the suspension. What was it?

Was the old guy caught drunk driving? Parking tickets? Speeding? Failure to signal? COME ON TELL US!

I caught a habitual offender charge in SC for Driving Under Suspension 3rd. 5 year suspension (3 1/2 years into it) and I'm facing a year in prison (out on appeals)...

...so yeah, 2090 seems about right for your 28th DUS.

Just couldn't keep out of the driver's seat?  You're not the first I've heard of, and I'm sure I'll meet others, but sometimes you just got to learn to obey the law.

I am surprised this old guy isn't facing jail time.  That's what it took for one guy I knew to realize the law wasn't playing with him.  And losing a car every time he got caught, got expensive.  He wen't over 20 years without a license, but he got it all legal now.  His suspension started with a DWI vehicular homicide, his friend/passenger died when the guy I know crashed while drunk.

Wow, if they arrested everyone in So Cal that wasn't using the indicator while making turns, they'd have to build quite a few new prisons...

Just stake out a corner in Alhambra. You'd swear that cars don't even have blinkers.
