In the house I bought 15 years ago, I convinced my wife to cut the lawn by buying her a nice John Deere lawn tractor.

/haven't cut the lawn yet. She just loves to drive the thing around

My (African) wife has been very enthusiastic about painting my house, inside and out.

Not so enthusiastic about actually learning  how to do it before doing it.  So with virtually no prep, the paint comes off as soon as the kids touch it... sigh.  I guess when it comes time to sell, I'll just get some professionals to come in, strip whatever paint they can, and put a proper coat back on... :(

Something's amiss. Everyone looked happy, healthy and well-fed, unlike those public service ads.

Those houses are farking sweet.

This seems less like a chore and more like a communal art project that you can take pride in. I'm not sure the women are getting shafted here. :)

Jokes aside, is this news? Burkina Faso is well known for their art. Don't they host Africa's largest crafts market?

Like most continents, Africa has a variety of nation-states and wide disparities in wealth and resources. Some Africans languish in desperate poverty; some are prosperous and happy. And so on.

In the remote part of westchester and fairfield counties you'll find interior walls being painted to look like stone.

No one cares about Africa. Not bono, not cher, not anyone. Africa is merely a dumping ground for the trash of the world, one where we all laugh & point. The little brown bastards are starving right by the Elephants, and no one cares, nor should they. The vultures await the opportunities. Eat up. The world says Africa is a gold mine. A diamond mine. A true mine. All the while, everyone dies. How in the hell can you NOT like that?

Though I am Colombian, but born and raised in the US, my 100% Colombian wife asked me to teach her how to paint.  So she now understands drop cloths, primer, and finishing work.

She learned in Colombia when she was going to pay to get her mothers house painted and I stepped in and educated the entire family on how to do it, and it was hella fun and we got the whole place done in a three day weekend.

Probably has a lot to do with what colors and designs go well with certain earthen material.

Not really. Africa is not like most continents. It's comparatively far more poor than the others and the chasm between the poor and rich is particularly profound. In short, it's full of more shiatholes than even the shiattiest of places. And all the pretty paint in the world, real or metaphorical, won't fix that.

"So I went to the United States in an exchange program.  You wouldn't believe what a shiathole it is.  Nobody hunts except with guns.  Nobody is fit enough to chase an antelope.  And even worse, there is no antelope.  You can't build a house where you want to, and they force you to spend many hours of your day in small cages on computers.  Then they give you money and take some of it away.  Then you go home to a place surrounded by garbage, smoke, and poison.  They have no open fields.  They have no open skies.  It's a country full of people living close to each other, but they don't know each other, and they fear each other."

and worst of all, very few of them die of cholera or civil unrest, so they all have to endure their suffering for decades longer than we do.  and here's the worst part.  over there, it's the MEN who get their genitals mutilated.

Not true, but since the majority of our population lives in cities I can see how that would be an assumption. In all seriousness, drive across the US at least once in your life. It's really quite amazing. If we could somehow disperse the city populations outward (yeah yeah, sprawl), we'd still have at least somewhat open spaces, especially out west. People need more of that, whether they realize it or not.

I would say AND. Alaska can't possibly encompass all the different environments you'll get in the lower 48. I desperately want to go there, don't get me wrong, but I drove across ND/MT a few years back and it was gorgeous. I was lucky, it was a year that had seen spring flooding, so the prairies were full of green waving grassy hills, and goddamn pelicans were flying high above the area I was driving through. Sun, sky, clouds, even though it was hot (which I hate) it was beautiful. Montana was even better, but I don't know if I can do it justice with words.
