This is why everyone should go vegan! You can eat healthy things like leaves, berries, and mushrooms that you can find in your own backyard!

Ciguatera? That's why you don't eat most reef fish. We speared a big 15 lb fish of some unknown variety while night diving in the BVI, we were a bit worried about it but suffered no problems. My biggest concern while spear-fishing is the 6 foot barracuda that appear over my shoulder every time I fired my spear gun asking, "Did you get it, did you get it?"

You'd think a Marlin would know which other fish it should be eating.

"The Marine Biologist from the Florida Aquarium says that there is about a 1 in 50 chance of contracting Ciguatera Poisoning around the Gulf but it is best to avoid eating large fish that feed on coral algae."

Well, no shiat.

The pic of the kid might be the teen, but the chick?  If 40 yrs of age is the new teen, then yeah, she's a teen.

Not sure it was a couple so much as two male teenage friends.

A 1 in 50 chance isn't exactly a longshot! I don't like those odds.

While ciguatera poisoning is pretty awful, it is not, as the OMFG! writer claims, deadly. That the physician in the Bahamas did not make an immediate presumptive diagnosis based on the symptoms and that the kids had recently eaten a reef fish indicates that he is a moron. Ciguatera is quite common there.

So thats what a manatee teenager looks like, no flippers yet.

I'll bet it was the tartar sauce. Or the cook didn't wash their hands. I just find it unlikely to come from the one part of the meal that was actually cooked.

Ciguatera toxin bioaccumulates in the muscle tissue of fish that feed on the dinoflagellates that produce it. It is not destroyed by cooking. That the kids were having both gastrointestinal distress and neurological symptoms is pathognomonic for the illness.

Marlin and Austin dove along a coral reef and harpooned two large fish. A Porgy Mutton Snapper, which they ate the next day.

Mutton Snapper is either a great Fark handle or the ultimate metal band name.

well i don't think it means he is a moron, but it does underpin the need to press for second opinions.

"In one study [http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2579736/#b10-md-06-00456" jQuery17102746288902007345="324" rid="b10-md-06-00456">10], a classic case of CFP was presented to 36 physicians in South Florida, where CFP is endemic. While 68% of the physicians correctly diagnosed a classic case of CFP, only about 47% of the physicians knew that CFP was a reportable disease (i.e. required by law to be reported to the health department); only 17% of the physicians recommended mannitol therapy (see below)."

I didn't RTFA, but I did read the captions and that was enough to learn the first one was the kid's mother and second one was the kid's sister.  If this weren't Florida I'd be concerned about subby's use of 'couple', but it is, so, yeah.

2014-07-17 10:00:22 AM
I think Subby is implying the boys are gay?

I think?

2014-07-17 10:02:21 AM
Oh, I just caught the caption, where it said photo was Austin and his mother.

But then TFA says:  Austin's mother along with her boyfriend were supposed to be on a fun trip to the Bahamas last week.

I'm having a bit of a time following who's whom.

2014-07-17 10:02:32 AM
So they racked up 30k in medical bills and people are raising money to help them.

This tells me they either did not have medical insurance, in which case how can they afford to go to the Bahamas? Isn't there a better use of their money?

Or,  their insurance was not accepted in the Bahamas.

patient: Doc, it hurts when I eat this.
doctor: Well, stop eating that.

Austin's family hopes that he will be home next week. Between Austin's and his mother's medical bills it is around $30,000.
There will be a benefit for Austin on August 2nd

One kid was named Marlin?  The story comes from Manatee?

If it weren't for the seriousness of the story, I would have thought this was a joke.

Anyway...  As much as I know about fish, and that is actually quite a lot.  I've never heard of a fish like a Snapper being poisonous.  They say it's from algae in the coral.  Ok.  But Snappers are carnivors.  I can't imagine how a fish that eats fish that eats algae could become poisonous.  You'd think the fish that ate the algae would have motabalised the toxin already.   And it might not have escaped your notice that Red Snapper is one of the most popular fish sold commercially.  And they spend all day eating fish that eat algae.

Not that I'm calling shenanigans.  I guess it's more like, "wow, these guys have some pretty f'n bad luck."

They didn't realize the Bahamas were like a whole different country. US law doesn't even apply there. No really, it's true.

Mein Fuhrer I Can Walk: I think Subby is implying the boys are gay?

I think the subby was click baiting by saying the words "cute couple", implying that it was a boy and a girl, they were together, and they were cute.
However, the double meaning comes into play here.  In this case it means "two people who happen to be slightly less ugly than normal",  and nothing more.

I would think unexpected and unwanted hallucinations would be OMFG to the person that has them and they would probably describe it as such to anybody they are describing the experience to.

Also how do you know that the kid told the doctor that he had eaten fish before he got ill? From what the parents and the kid said, he was very sick and hallucinating when they brought him in, so he may not have been able to communicate to the doctor that he had eaten fish. Once the hallucinations subsided he was probably better able to communicate what he had done in the previous days.

...maybe the doctor didn't have time for all that foolishness. Could be he was thinking that when some ros-clot tourist kid eating the rock fish gets sick, let them suffer for being such an ignorant fool.

More likely, the mom who told the reporter "they didn't have a game plan" was so upset that she went a little too much drama queen. Have you ever lived in another country and seen how idiot American tourists can be?

I doubt the doctor was the moron.
