The federal government is grappling with an influx of 57,000 migrant children from Central America. President Barack Obama has asked Congress for $3.7 billion to help combat the crisis.

So we are going to give each one of them $610,000 and say congratulations? Where is my $610,000?

This is what we will lose so that people won't think we are uncaring. We also spent 2 trillion on Iraq helping them with the regime change that wasn't our business. Assuming there are 20 million in Iraq, why didn't we just give them each half a million isntead of wasting our soldiers and ruining their country.

This will not end well. Actually, like Iraq, it will never end at all because we have sent the word to send all your children and we will childcare them with socialism from kinder to grave.

Throwing money at a problem, alone, doesn't fix it.  But spending money on a solution can help.  That being said the 3.7 billion is not just for the 57,000 kids that have currently come through but to accomodate what will probably be more in the near future and try and stabilize the countries that these children are from so they don't feel the need to flee.

It's not like they're handing the kind a wad of cash, but I think you know this.

The problem here isn't that we don't know what to do with these kids, or that we don't have a legal framework to handle these cases. We have both. What we don't have is the infrastructure and the personnel required to handle it. The money is for facilities to house the children, and personnel to reduce the pendency time for children's cases for asylum to be heard. That way not only will we be able to humanely house the children who are already here, but we will in the future never come across such a situation again, since we will have the people and the facilities to handle it.

Subby, I know you're just making the obvs cheap shot, but just because one of our 100 Senators isn't from a neighboring state doesn't mean that they shouldn't be concerned or informed about a national issue.

Just like any budget bill it is also packed with other non-related items (I saw there was money for forest fire protection and fire fighting in there)

Then the people that we hire to help resolve the issue will stay on forever raising federal spending. These children are not illegal immigrants, they are job creators. Refugees are a government jobs program.

/By childern, I mean adults who say they are children so they are not deported.
//By refugee I mean the 90+ percent who said they came over for the amnesty they heard they would get.

And I am sure the sight of those poor suffering children will move her to do something to help those children, just as it has every GOP member who has been there. That's why they are working so hard to get the funding for better housing and care for the kids. It's not like this is some political game where they use the suffering of children to bludgeon the opposition with no intention of helping the poor child refugees.

First of all, that's a different argument than kevin was making. Second of all, was that in Obama's request of $3.7Bn, or was it added by someone else later? Thirdly, given all the forest fires recently, while it's not the appropriate venue for adding that funding, it might not be a bad idea to fund that, too.

I thought she was a rep of the state of ALASKA, for the people of the great state of ALASKA, which we are law abiding citizens, who obey the laws, how are these illegals still in the states and not deported back where they came from, send them back and if she says send them here, we should send her home to her father, as we have enough people in ALASKA, who need our help first, as they are ALASKA CITENZENS first... let alone USA citizens... SECURE OUR BORDERS....

As long as they remember that the Gateway to South Padre Island has " very strict law enforcement. Drive sober and drive the speed limit." If that's what the local DA tells a room full of judges, you'd better believe that congressmen will get the same treatment even if it isn't Spring Break.

I bet he asked that no cameras or media be there; so he could truly concentrate on this complex issue.

The only reason to spend billions on permanent facilities and staffing them would be if you expect this situation to be ongoing. Think about that for a minute. How exactly does creating giant infrastructure to harbor/process offenders, discourage illegal entry or enforce existing immigration laws?

Looks like we're in for some more "unintended consequences".

The local Fox News idiots were droning on about why the Feds didn't send those darned kids to Oracle AZ when the sheriff had been so adamant about it. Rather than ask the sheriff why he's an idiot, they are blaming the Fed Government for not explaining themselves. Never mind the fact they never actually decided to go forward with an idea for doing this.

Senators from Alaska and Hawaii are flying to Texas to get a briefing they could just as easily get on the phones in their D.C. office.  Or from google.  Or from turning on the TV.

Can someone remind me - how did these guys get the 'fiscally responsible' image?

Smoke doesn't care about borders.   Nor does pork.  Not sure if wildland fire suppression is pork, but it was most likely a good place to tack it as it seems the Pacific Northwest is going up in flames and the Forest Service is predicting a shortfall in their budget for fire.

Why doesn't she go to the 'Murkin boarder with Canadiastan? There is a crisis developing over at Tok and Tetlin Jct. with illegals pouring across the boarder taking are jerbs!

Why IS IT that Canadians can freely enter the US without a visa, yet Mexicans cannot? Isn't there something in the Constitution about not discriminating on the basis of national origin?

I went to the border yesterday and didn't see 1 immigrant child from South America, much less the 57,000 Obama says are a problem. He ain't getting my vote for funds to combat a non-existent problem!

Nobody actually cares about wasting taxpayer money provided their personal taxes are low.

As for why she has to run for the border, the current right wing talking point is to bash Obama for not doing a photo op at the border, so every Republican now has to do a photo op at the border.

I totally agree we need to fund the fire fighting efforts and increase the money. The drought has not let up at all and there are areas that are going to get pummeled but Kevin's post that I replied to inferred it was too much money per kid in question so I was adding in that it also included money for other issues.
Thanks for going out into those fires, rough job and I am glad someone is willing to do it.

Almost no one studying wildfires these days agrees with you, and in fact most have come around to the viewpoint that NOT letting wildfires burns leads to ever larger, less controllable and more destructive fires.

There was a good article about the evolving wildfire thinking recently in Slate.

In theory that works. In practice not so much.  Much of the firefighting goes into protecting structures.  There's been a few fires recently that have been left to burn but they are in the minority.
