The good guys are tired, S.H.I.E.L.D. has been destroyed, and there's no one else for the planet to turn to when menace looms on the horizon. Everyone wants a break-and that's exactly how they're about to be broken. There's no abdicating heroism.
"What you said about abdication is apt, but I think it's also about recognizing limitations," Robert Downey Jr. says. "The downside of self-sacrifice is that if you make it back, you've been out there on the spit and you've been turned a couple times and you feel a little burned and traumatized."
For better or worse (trust us, it's worse), his Tony Stark has devised a plan that won't require him to put on the Iron Man suit anymore, and should allow Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, Hawkeye, and the Hulk to get some much needed R&R as well. His solution is Ultron, self-aware, self-teaching, artificial intelligence designed to help assess threats, and direct Stark's Iron Legion of drones to battle evildoers instead.
The only problem? Ultron (played by James Spader through performance-capture technology) lacks the human touch, and his superior intellect quickly determines that life on Earth would go a lot smoother if he just got rid of Public Enemy No. 1: Human beings. "Ultron sees the big picture and he goes, 'Okay, we need radical change, which will be violent and appalling, in order to make everything better'; he's not just going 'Muhaha, soon I'll rule!'" Whedon says, rubbing his hands together.
"He's on a mission," the filmmaker adds, and smiles thinly. "He wants to save us."

This is basically the plot that I had hoped that they would go with and predicted months ago.

1) It's Tony Stark's fault.

2) Ultron wants to save us from ourselves and he's going to do it whether we want him to or not.

I farking love this movie already.

also, you'll not the deliberate mention of 'threat assessment'..

Remember that Hydra program from Winter Soldier and what it did exactly?

I have high hopes for Superman v. Batman.  They're announcing all these people going to be in it....and everyone is so upset.
Listen, Cyborg will be in a 30 seconds.  Someone will say "Hey, look, there is Victor Stone!"  and SCENE.
Same with Wonder Woman.  She's not going to be a big part of this movie.  She's going to be Hawkeye in "Thor"
Everyone is SO bent out of shape.

My take is Lex Luthor is rebuilding Metropolis with Bruce Wayne, both think this new Superman is a bad dude.
Then Brainiac comes in and Superman saves the day with Batman and Lex Luthor is all "But ..... but......"

And oh, has anyone heard about this guy that shoots arrows in Seattle ?  Stay tuned for Justice League!

/Ultron is a Stark robot gone bad now?  Just like Iron Man 2?  And elements of Iron Man 3?  YAWN.

IM 2 was Hammer and Whiplash bastardizing Stark's suit, and IM 3 was Extremis.  Not exactly the same thing.  The auto-pilot suits were meant to be a lead-in for this though.

I don't know what that means.  I'm not a Marvel nerd so all I know is the movies.  And it seems a lot of the movies deal with "Stark tech"

Even the big baddie in Thor was a giant robot they THOUGHT was Starks.

I'm willing to bet that Tony gets the 'brilliant' idea to combine his own Jarvis program with the Hydra threat assessment program and the end result is the Ultron AI.

Or more likely, Zack Snyder looks at script concepts for Justice League, sees this story, and smiles as people will be comparing Thanos to Darkseid rather than the other way around because Marvel is waiting too damn long to pull the trigger on that.

mjbok: MichiganFTL: That photo and synopsis just put it on projection to make 1.2 billion. Trailer delivers? 2 billion

2 billion?  No chance in hell.

Oh, it might.

Iron Man made a bit under $600 million, the sequel made a bit over $600 million. Ho-hum. First Avengers movie made a bit over $1.5 billion, and then the third Iron Man movie made a bit over $1.2 billion, not quite double the second Iron Man movie. Also, first Captain America made a bit over $350 million, and the sequel nearly twice that just this year. The first Thor was just under $350 million, and the sequel from last year a bit under $650 million.

It looks the momentum is still building, and the movies are building on one another in popularity.

At the very least I would expect the new Avengers installment to break into the top 10 grossing movies adjusted for inflation:
