They're museum exhibit spree robbers?  Who does that?

timujin: They're museum exhibit spree robbers?  Who does that?

My guess is people doing it for the thrill/fun thinking it's a harmless crime.

They probably figured a plastic dinosaur small enough to fit in a purse is worth all of $20.  The $10,000 figure seems crazy for a replica.

That did seem slightly inflated, but I guess it's not exactly what you'd buy in the toy store, it's likely a hand made, one of a kind model.

As opposed to a real live Edmontosaurus?

Well, as opposed to a fossilized one.

Yeah, I imagine those don't make pretty displays, though.

Who steals a plastic replica of an animal that roamed the earth 6,000 years ago?

I hope they repent and pray to the Jesus Christ, our almighty savior, for forgiveness and salvation.

Since it's a NC museum, I assume they left the figure of Jesus riding the Edmontosaurus behind.

medius: $10k of resin?

Hand sculpted, hand painted, one-of-a-kind, I'm going to guess. The sculptor sculpts the thing in wax first and then casts the final in resin. It's not a "replica" in the sense of "cast resin replica of that original Edmontosaurus that other museum has" but "replica of the dinosaur that hasn't roamed the Earth in some time."

Dumbasses probably don't know they committed a felony.

Now printing: purse sized replica 3d printed plastic resin dinosaurs, only $9,000! You want dinosaurs in your purse? No problem. Is that a baby Hadrosaur in your handbag or are you just happy to see me? Be the life of the party! Amaze your Paliontologically inclined peers! Stun people of all ages when you show them the chunk of plastic that you paid someone a large pile of money for!

You send me a check for $9,000 that clears the bank and I will print you any dinosaur that will fit into a standard sized generic store bought handbag dimension of around 5" x 5" x 5" +/- 7" that you care to name. Or make one up! Hell, for that price I'll even make a somewhat serious attempt at cleaning it up nice and painting it authentic dinosaur colors.

Seriously though, someone send me a check for $9,000 to print make you a custom dinosaur sculpture. Please?

Even if it is privately funded, they should still get rectal cancer and die.

Classic. I noted one shoe store didn't have any security on the racks of backpacks on one wall near the secondary doorway. The cashier pointed out they were zip tied to the six-hanger. Unsecured six-hangers. So the thief would have to bring snips, or steal the whole hanger. Considering that doorway was 30 feet from the mall exit. Well, I gave them the problem, I haven't checked back to see if they found a solution. I know a little nondescript scumbag who might like the insight, go do a bit of shoplifting for resale.

Good thing it wasn't a 3d printed replica, it would have cost double that.

2wolves: Security cameras in museums?

What will they think of next?

I've been in museums with and without cameras in the exhibit areas. Interviewed to be the collections manager at one museum that (1) had no cameras and (2) had ongoing theft and vandalism issues, but (3) was not interested in setting up cameras at the locations of vandalism and theft. I am almost glad they selected the other candidate. If cheap props disappear, the director and the board won't care. If something they see as important disappears, they take notice.

We live in Raleigh and practically live at the Science museum.  y son and I are the science nerds in our house, but my wife went to college with a guy who makes replicas of prehistoric animals.  He made the ones in the Hastings Museum Cretaceous Sea Exhibit.
