I don't think LA Weekly's iconoclast will get as many bites as the "rolling coal" folks.

2014-07-16 02:20:13 PM
[Zappa] biatched about society, put down rock 'n' roll, affected a strident, elitist intellect, and generally made an ass of himself.

Project much, Jonny-boy?

/List fails without Neil Young

When the article had this pretentiousness in the opening paragraphs: "There is no acceptable role in the marketplace for radicals like Charlie Feathers, Poly Styrene, Lux Interior or Roky Erickson, but there's always room for the homogeneous, money-hungry, play-it-safe phonies on this list..." you can't be surprised by what followed.

That said, some on that list are vastly overrated.

Doubtful anyone that says obscure punk front man Poly Styrene never got his due from the masses is probably bored beyond words by rap.

clearly a moonlighting pitchfork writer.

When reading this digital drivel, I pictured the writer as looking like this:

www.menshealth.com.ua

I was a bit off,apparently:

www.glendalenewspress.com

But a perusal of his Facebook page confirms that he's a by-the-numbers LA scenester, with all the
intellectual heft that implies (as in:  none at all).

A rationalization he likely developed based on the attendance at his performances.

I can't help but wonder if there is anyone at all that takes his faux angry hipster trolling seriously?

Well, he did get #1 right.  Zappa was terrible.  And yes, 75% of that list are folks who are severely overrated.

He got a few right---Crosby, Zappa, Springsteen, Lennon. I have a few minor quibbles with some of the others but won't lose sleep on them or post endless replies in this thread.

Dylan is a great songwriter but not remarkable as a musician.

Bruce had about 8 years of greatness, but almost nobody has more than that.

You can ignore Zappa's speaking. When he shut up and played his guitar he was good.

2014-07-16 06:03:05 PM
Smug hipster is smug.

I hate Zappa's "music" like the plague but he influenced more people on a Tuesday in 1979 (pick one) than this guy will in his whole life.

phlegmmo: List fails without Jim Morrison.

Holy hell THIS. I loved The Doors when I was a kid, but didn't quite realize the sort of simpering, stomping, drag-assed f*cknugget Jim Morrison was until I got older. These days pretty much any Doors song aside from "Riders" and "L.A. Woman" make me want to jam lawn darts into my eardrums. And those two songs are excepted because I really like the music, not whatever skid mark Morrison may have left on them.

2014-07-16 06:13:27 PM
No Ted Nugent?

Well, granted that bunch of rock stars didn't solve as many of society's problems as say, U2 or Madonna or the Smiths or the Pixies.  But at least they mostly acknowledged them and said a little bit about them.  I mean, it's pretty unfair to measure those guys up against "the King of *pop*" , but then they never thought of making 12-foot statues of themselves, either.  At least with Zappa, it was somebody else that did it.

2014-07-16 06:17:52 PM
Springsteen's working-man schtick wears a little thin when he can spend hundreds of thousands of dollars on show horses for his daughter. The guy has been a millionaire for decades. It's his money, and he earned it and he can spend it any way he wants. But his acting like he still knows what it's like to be jobless and broke just makes him look silly.

2014-07-16 06:21:36 PM
I don't have the skills, but if someone can photoshop the Opti-Grab on his glasses, I would give them the internet gratitude they deserve. Also that guy is a tool.

2014-07-16 06:22:27 PM
I'd nominate Todd Rundgren.. He may have some innovative ideas, but as a person he's an arrogant, misogynist douchebag. He had a couple of hits, but he's better off behind the console doing
producer work.

Neal Schoen knows one thing, how to get the right people together. Otherwise he's an ass. He starts and quits things (Including marriages) on a whim and leaves his band mates hanging out
to dry. He is very similar to Neal Young, both are  flighty douchebags that can't stick with anything.

2014-07-16 06:22:44 PM

FTFA: David Crosby's appalling legacy of faux-folk rock epitomizes the worst of hippie-era dreck.

DeBussy, Da Pussy.
Schubert, Spewburt.

Jiro Dreams Of McRibs: could someone point out anti-war songs popularized during Bush-Cheney?

I think there was only one popular one. That one by Pink. There were others, I think Bad Religion pretty much dedicated an entire album to the whole thing. And Twinemen, Dana Colley's band after Morphine, had a really good one.

2014-07-16 06:28:33 PM
The trolling, strong it is with this article. That or LA Weekly are idiots, or most likely both.

Here's my list in no particular order or concern whether they were good musicians or not: Ian Curtis, Fred Durst, Morrissey, Ted Nugent, Blackie Lawless (and his former guitar player that's going off on how blacks supposedly destroyed heavy metal), Varg, Phil Anselmo, The Gallagher Bros. (though they are hilarious as hell about it), GG Allin, Danzig, Dave Mustaine, that idiot singer from As I Lay Dying, Bono, Courtney Love, Chad Kroeger, all of King 810, all of Upon A Burning Body for their asshole missing person publicity stunt and denying it, that guy from Skrewdriver (google it and you'll see many reasons why), John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Jim Morrison, the keyboardist/main guy from Nightwish, Angela Gassow, Andreas Kisser (Sepultura), Geoff Tate, and waaaaaaaaay too many others to list.

Seriously its a list of most of the best songwriters of the twentieth century and David Crosby. This author should have the boots put to him "medium style"
