Before everyone comes in with "Libs! Libs! Libs!", I agree, this is bullshiat. Smokers are usually assholes and the world would be a better place without them but this is bullshiat. Then again, it's a college not the government and they can do what they want.

The world would be even better off without busybodies and nanny staters, but here we are.

/Don't smoke cigarettes.

Well that's exactly what I just expressed. But it's not really a nanny "state" if it's a college campus.

I quit after smoking for years- I don't miss it anymore.

They really should just keep increasing the taxes on them.

seems idiotic, if a person is smoking outside or vaping an ecig outside  what does it matter to anyone else.

Officials at Ohio University are considering mandatory classes for students who get caught smoking on campus as part of a draconian ban on smoking for the upcoming 2015-2016 academic year.

That's awesome.  Imagine how cool and rebellious it's going to be to smoke on campus.  Flick a butt at the crusty, old dean and you'll be a campus hero.

Hmm.  FTA:

1. College makes rule.  No smoking allowed on campus.
2. Repeat violators of rule are sent to Office of Community Standards.
3. Smokers are in uproar.

It seems to me that a property owner is allowed to make rules about what visitors to the property are allowed to do.  If you cannot abide by the rules, you are free not to go to that property.

The school isn't forcing an opinion on anyone.  They are forcing a prohibition on a specific behavior on their campus.

If you want to smoke, do it off campus.

That didn't work so well for bar owners in California

Oh no.  A non-fine punishment for violating a rule.

How tragic.

I vote for electro-brain shock and constant heroin injections until the tobacco cravings subside.

joeshill: 1. College makes rule. No smoking allowed on campus.

The problem is that they accept federal funds, so there are all kinds of restrictions about what kind of rules they can make.

Honestly, colleges are so heavily funded by the state and federal governments that they should basically be considered extensions of the government.  Would you be OK with your town requiring re-education camps for anyone caught smoking in the local park?

2014-07-16 04:45:22 PM
Has it really come to this?
Why don't people just, I don't know, not smoke where they're not supposed to?
It really IS possible to go a few hours or more without lighting up.

I'm a smoker and I think this is stupid, but

users of demon nicotine

Editorial sarcasm like that in your article is not helping.

The campus is over 1800 acres.  You're telling me that they couldn't find a single spot on all that land to let people light up.  And the ban on e-cigs is really farking stupid.  It goes way over the line.

I don't smoke or even go to college but as a taxpayer I have to pay for this idiotic war on people smoking a plant just like the other idiotic war on people smoking a plant, that's why it isn't the same as just some business owner saying smoking isn't allowed.
