Man, I'd run up to her and play one round of "I've got your nose" and just run off.

Her parents would never be able to convince her otherwise for a long, long time.

2014-07-16 12:24:45 PM
Did they know of her condition early on in the pregnancy, and chose to continue with it? Or did they find out much later?

There's a pretty good chance they didn't find out till it was too late to get an abortion. Our obstetrician didn't do a 3D ultrasound of our children's faces until 28-30 weeks (out of 40). And if they had cheap insurance, they may not have had many good quality ultrasounds.

Does anybody else suddenly become more aware of their nose and have to work to restore automatic breathing when they see the picture of the girl?

Also, the story seems incomplete - do people without noses generally have on-balance very unpleasant lives?

I kept complaining my family was mumbling and that I couldn't hear what they were saying so my parents took me to get my hearing checked. Turns out my hearing is fine and all my family need to stop mumbling and speak the hell up.

I hope her eyes are okay, since she won't be able to wear glasses.

She could just wear a pair of monocles...

In addition to living with a deformity, Tessa also has sight problems.

When she was 11 weeks old, she had surgery to restore some vision to her left eye, but she emerged from the procedure completely blind in that eye, according to the family's fundraising page. She is able to see well out of her right eye.

Dammit. Okay, one monocle.

Heh - "got your depth perception!"

She's so cute I didn't even notice her nose until I read the caption. Best wishes to her and her family.

I'd be surprised if she did notice the nose.

Can't help having Welsh parents I guess. Still, you're lucky as these things go.

The surgeon's statement wasn't as bad as the parents said:

Prognosis of such children is poor in terms of mental and physical development as well as cosmetic and functional outcomes. Antenatal diagnosis at an appropriate gestational age can provide the option of termination of pregnancy to the parents, especially if associated with other anomalies and trisomy.

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2788472/

But it's understandable why a distraught parent would read it inaccurately.

That said, with so few cases reported, how the heck is a doc making such a sweeping statement about a poor prognosis?

/Trisomy can lead to miscarriage or down syndrome
//There probably aren't too many folks skilled at making prosthetic noses. Suspension is a problem.
