This should dispel the myth that Detroit is nothing but rampant lawnlessness.

Oh, I'm sure Detroit will find some way to stop them eventually, subby.  Once the City parks department has started mowing, all that work becomes UNION work - and Cthulhu help them then.  Or someone will sue them for something, or claim an injury from a flying rock... Unfortunately, it's just a matter of time.

So, just like the old gangs then?

These guys do a lot to keep the old Tiger Stadium ground looking awesome too. There are a lot of folks that want to help the city and there are a lot of folks in the city that are starting to join in.

Are you saying that someone was "mowing her lawn" when she was too far gone to save?

Usually what happens is the city sends the cops out to stop the volunteers, supposedly because the city could be held liable if they were aware of the activity. They did that to a guy planting flower gardens in D.C. and then ripped out every single flower he had planted.

I'm on the positive side of this. If every person does one small thing to make the world a better place then the world will become a better place one small thing at a time.

Until the gangs shoot them and steal their lawnmowers... but yeah, it's a nice thought when you're not trying to beautify Hell itself.

By day, Tom Nardone is an Internet entrepreneur, running a Troy-based online retailer of "things that are embarrassing to buy in person" called PriveCo.

One of his sites offers The Perfect Shaver for Shaving Your Balls.

Apparently, there's a market for that.

More like unions didn't get paid to plant them in DuPont Circle.

Right. The cops in Detroit don't respond to 911 calls involving armed home invasion, but they run out to prevent renegade lawn mowers.

RAK,
By Zidders Roofurry (me)

If your day seems kind of sucky,
And your life seems too off track
Just help someone feel lucky
And perform for them a RAK.

It's not that hard to do,
It's a way I've found to find bliss.
Let love's light shine on through
Via a Random Act of Kindness.

Even after draining the life out of the city, the government still gives all to the union.

Good.  There's a problem, or even the symptom of a problem, and instead of whining about it they make an effort.  Not like the biatch who came out to ask why they weren't picking up the trash...

\maybe it'll jump start a bit of initiative by the residents to not let their homes fall any lower

This is the dumbest effin post I've read today. 'Usually.' Usually?! You say that like it's a common occurrence in Detroit for the police to show up and tell these guys to stop being decent human beings. People like you regurgitate anecdotes as statistical fact and make the internet a worse place as a result.

Because one guy in DC (who may or may not have been a jackhole himself) got taken to task for planting stuff (where he may or may not have been allowed to do so) all cities, everywhere, stop their citizens from doing anything. Good job, buddy.

2014-07-16 04:23:15 PM
These so-called volunteers are taking jobs away from honest, hard working union members. Plus they're devaluing the work that those city employees do.

Imagine - they're working for free. How un-American is that?

I contacted all these groups of people who I thought would want to ride around a velodrome - mountain bike groups, road bike groups, remote control car clubs, motorcycle groups, meth dealers...

I went around neighborhoods spray painting curbs for as an intern in Flint. I was tagging properties owned by the land bank. Most people come out, ask what you're doing, you tell them what the goals are, and if it's to better the neighborhood, they (gasp) tend to think that's cool and leave you be. But they do ask to improve their properties next, so the quote in the article about mowing neighboring yards is right on. The fact that they're all going in groups, cleaning up and GTFO is key, and admirable.

There are two types of people in this world: Those that put their shopping carts in the corral, and those that think that there are "people" to do that for you then leave it in the handicap space.

She's a true Detroiter, and towards the bottom, Detroit Mowing gang isn't even from Detroit.  Which is how Detroit residents like it, other people bailing them out.

FTA "They want us to do something else, like "Can you mow my yard next?" or "Why haven't you been picking up the trash?"

THAT is Detroit in a nutshell and a big reason why it has become the way it is now. It never even occurs to those people to grab a rake or even an old plastic Wal-Mart bag and spend 10 minutes filling it with trash themselves. Everything is someone else's job. Everything needs some program paid by everyone else to do it for them. It's never about fixing up their own neighborhoods, picking up the trash just in the vicinity of their house, maybe spend an hour once a week to do some mowing themselves. All things in life must come at someone else's expense and done by others for them. They see a guy like this, who should be an inspiration to them to act themselves, and all they think is "how can I put my share of the work on his shoulders too". That's the Detroit way.

I'd bet anything that the guy who started this, and most of the members, isn't actually from Detroit. You don't find people with that "I'll do it myself because it's right" attitude in that city anymore.

Not that I disagree with you, but I believe when she said "pick up the trash" she was referring to the garbage trucks coming to collect from cans.
