Commence discussion of whether this non-Nazi but former German soldier is or is not a hero-- let the generalizations and callous comments about the WW2 era begin!

I hit a paywall, anyone care to paste the story?

Darn. He was a class act. He actually met my late father through an elderly German pilot at dad's assisted living place. We'll have to pay our respects tomorrow.

Funny how he had no problem with being drafted into the Nazi Army, but once he and his buddies had lost, he suddenly realized that it was possible to flee to another country after all.

But of course, he didn't know that the Nazis were bad, he though all the Jews from his village had suddenly gone on vacation, yadda yadda.

Not exactly related, but the assisted living place my father was in had ex-nazis, holocaust survivors, WWII vets, multiple religions, etc. I never saw any animosity between residents. The ex-nazi pilot and one of the holocaust survivors had chess games after dinner a couple of times a week.

Wait, the Germans were conscripting people in freshly overtaken areas? Poor performance in the later stages of the war makes more sense now.

If his mother was a US citizen, he might have actually had a claim to US citizenship by birth. I've slacked on the topic since Birthers clammed up when it looked like their savior might be a short Cuban Canadian citizen with dubious US citizenship claims.

A bit of a Nobby Nobs move to switch uniforms, but almost honest. If he hadn't been conscripted he might have been Hungarian army. I'm surprised previous service didn't exempt him from the US draft.

Know who else fought under three flags? Lauri Törni. AKA Larry Thorn. Wore the uniform of Finland, Nazi Germany, and the U.S. Army Special Forces in Vietnam. But let's forget about the one in middle. Kiitos!

Damn. I only have 10 articles left this month with the Milwaukee Wisconsin Journal Sentinel. Or is that the Milwaukee Journal Wisconsin Sentinel? I don't know. My life has lost all meaning.

Funeral trifecta complete? There's one mentioned in this obituary. I'm guessing that's a weird first for FARK.

Ehhh... conscript soldier - no room to biatch here really.  People conquer your country like a freight train, show up with guys with guns and tell kids they're in the army now?  No sane way I know of to get out of that, like it or not.  Stick your head up and yell about it and you just get it shot off, quite literally - no one trusts conquered country scrips for shiat for quite a while, other than as low-value "go do this crap work" goombahs with uniforms.

I'd call it a wash, file it under "Well WTF would YOU have done to handle that better, realistically?   Yeah..."   Guy seems to have lived a pretty good life after that, good for him.

/your opinions may vary, shrug

Same argument applies to the whole but you knew about the camps argument.

Of course they knew ther was a camp. Maybe not the extent of the killings, but so what. What were they supposed to do? The Nazis sent political dissidents to the same camps.

Ah yiss, not many things more fun than to be drunk off your ass and bashing around on a dance floor doing the polka and occasionally catching sight of the one old couple showing the youngsters how to really polka! Roll out the barrel indeed.
