Does anyone else have problems with wimp.com?  The play function can never keep up with the stream for me.  I don't have problems with any other video sites (even those).  Is it me or my system, or does wimp.com load slow?

Wimp really sucks for a limited bandwidth connection because they only serve highest definition. The YouTube source (when it exists) should always be given instead.

Hand Feeding & Playing With A Friendly Platypus by Cute Creatures Great And Small - 1,986,672 views

This beautiful platypus loved playing in the water and loved a tickle! She was so friendly and ate food right out of my hand! There is only one place you can do this in the world and that's at Healesville Sanctuary.

There may be little difference between "loving a tickle" and indicating sexual receptivity.

Platypodes (technically has to do with whether or not a word we now use has a Latin etymology and was a noun or verb, but common and consistent usage is the important part).

So they have a "tickle spot" like dogs do, it looks like... I had a dog whose 'tickle spot' was basically the same place her foot scratched. I moved her foot about 1/4" and she went on auto pilot for like 30 seconds...

Yeah, but is this 'official'? I keep seeing things where the explanation is that too many morons called something the wrong thing(Or spelled it wrong), so now it's "OK' to use the "wrong" spelling or meaning. The one that comes to mind right now is 'decimate'. Rather than the dictionary take the headline stance that decimate means 'reduce by 10%', rather than the incorrect usage of 'wipe out', they just allow both now. I'm starting to get cynical when it comes to proving something with the dictionary. It's like Wikipedia with less possible editors, it seems.

Mikey1969: Yeah, but is this 'official'

From the Oxford English Dictionary (can't link, need registration): Inflections: Plural platypuses, platypi, (rare) platypusses, (rare) platypodes... The plural form platypi is formed by analogy with Latin nouns of the second declension ending in -us . The plural form platypodes is after Hellenistic Greek πλατύποδες

Usage:

1832 Philos. Trans. (Royal Soc.) 122 533 Several young Platypi were obtained.

So if it's due to misuse, it's been misused pretty much since its introduction into the language.

Fine with me, it's just a recent thing that's starting to annoy the fark out of me. As a result, I'm automatically suspicious.

I do not know if any organization maintains English to say any usage is official or unofficial. There are improper usages which do not convey the correct meaning, but playtpi, platypuses, and platypodes all convey the same meaning, as does platypus when used in an obvious context.

That's why I put official in the single quotes. I know we don't have an 'Engrish Rules' body, was just wondering if it was something that people had just started accepting. Another farker actually found the dates of usage for the different pluralizations, but I only let him win his point because he had a cool screen name. ;-)

No, just a genuine pet peeve. Incorrect pseudo-Latin plurals.

And of course, it should be included in dictionaries because people use it as a plural of "platypus". Dictionaries describe how language is used; they don't dictate how it should be used. A good dictionary may list "platypi" as deprecated, due to shady etymology.

Personally, I favour not pretending that we're speaking a foreign language anyway; we're not communicating in Latin, why should we try and follow Latin grammar for plurals, instead of using English plurals? Particularly with words that don't even have a Latin etymology?

/Good enough for Jesus, etc.
//And, yes, I recognise the irony of using a Latin abbrev. at the end of my last sentence.

It's ALL cloacal.

Monotreme literally means "one hole" - poop, piss, sex, egg laying. A male platypus has a 4 headed penis inside the cloaca which is only used for sex, not urination. This separates fun from elimination but everything still takes in the the waste treatment plant. Also it has no scrotum since the testes are inside the body.

This just in. Languages evolve.  Did you know that "hussy" used to mean housewife?  Or that "backlog" used to mean the biggest log near the back in a fire?  Buxom used to mean humble or obedient.  Inmate used to just mean housemate.  Balderdash used to mean a mix of liquors.  Shall I go on?

Also, at least God didn't fark up like when he made the poodle.
