I have family in Ithaca and NYC. I go to Ithaca. I do not go to NYC.

Good grief.  Has the author of this article actually been to any of these cities?!  There are many shiatholes on the list.  Poughkeepsie is #2 in violent crime!  'might as well put Newburgh on the list!

Cuomo's been trying to push upstate tourism for years.

Hey now, Newburgh has one nice block with a view of the river. It isn't all gangs, squalor and riverside guido bars.

Albany and Troy truly sucks. Going there in winter is like going to the darkest part of some dystopian Soviet wasteland - nothing but gray - gray concrete, gray skies, gray people and gray snow.

I just saw that bumper sticker in Taos about a week ago. Hadn't seen one in ages.

The last time I was in Albany (vs. driving through on the highway) was an early April day which was exactly as you described: concrete and gray and snow and gray. At least the snow plow looked good.

I can't believe why Albany is proud of this concrete eyesore:

Damn, is the entire lower right corner of that photo made up of burned out apartment buildings?

So, a college town with ~30,000 residents beat a major metropolitan city with ~8.5 million residents in a list based on "factors such as nightlife per capita, live music venues, and percentage of young residents aged 18-34"?  Shocking.

Nope, it's just Albany being Albany.

And if "Ironweed" is any indication, Albany has been Albany for ages.

I will second all earlier remarks about Troy, also. What a soul-crushing shiathole. RPI's a fantastic engineering/science school but it's not for people who've also cultivated other interests (aside from hockey), and unless you've got wheels you are pretty well cut off from civilization.

Cornell is not exciting.
