pretty much this.  Why would you spend all that energy rendering the city of New New York and not do the full opening sequence?

My drawing (two dimensional) is more "realistic" looking than your drawing.  It's so good, I'm going to ignore that it's still 2D and call it 3D

Neat.

The texture, shader and lighting work was really well done.

The modeling on the Nimbus and some of the buildings was insane.

Not bad. A feature length film in this style would do some serious fan justice for the series being over.

anyway, as good as i liked the reference, there are several things wrong with its use of Flatland Physics

for one, eyes are useless if not on the very edge of the face (so in "reality", the Flatlanders, ane even bender with his frame, would be blind.

There is no ground plane to walk on. Its not needed.

the professor and other characters should not be able to flip their heads around.

we really should be viewing the characters guts, not their clothes.

It is definitely the least accurate cartoon about a guy who was cryogenically-frozen for 1000 years, a one-eyed sewer mutant, and a sarcastic robot fueled by alcohol that I've ever seen.

The current 'final' episode was far more fan justice than we will ever need for the shoddy treatment of Futurama by the networks. I dare anyone to watch 'Meanwhile' and not cry. It needs to be part of the Voight-Kampff test along with 'Jurassic Bark'.

For FSM's sake, they even gave Zoidberg Emilia Clarke as a girlfriend in the second to last episode! How much more of a happy ending to the series can people want?

The cryogenics stuff i can completely buy into, no problem, and hey, you can burn alcohol in a car and make it run, but they butchered the source material on this reference!!!

What would you call it then? You do realize that Futurama was partially animated with computers*, so technically the original look is CGI too. Of course, both looks are also "3D" in that they present a three-dimensional perspective, albeit on a two-dimensional medium. Nevertheless, there is a definite distinction between the two looks, so you need a term for the new look. "Realistic" is too generic (i.e., you could argue that old-fashioned rotoscoped animation is "realistic").

/Even if humans were drawing the animation by hand, they were using computers to add special effects and at the very least to colorize the drawings. Animated TV shows ditched manual colorizing maybe two decades ago

The thought that came unbidden to my mind, is that wouldn't that be an absolutely amazing place to have the next Bioshock game, and wouldn't it be funny to see them have the Professor do a lol/jk on the ending of Bioshock Infinite with some silliness.

I'll agree, the last two episodes were fantastic. A happy ending for many of us would have been the continuation of the series. Futurama could have easily lasted twice as many seasons. If The Simpsons pulled it off, why not?
