This poor kitten overindulged and died from too much food, protect your cats with facial-recognition!

"What does the Internet love more than anything else? Cats."

I read that something like 75% of all internet traffic is pornography. I suppose there's cat porn though, what with rule 34 etc.

WTF.

why... no really why.

I love my cat but this is as crazy as people who leave their net worth to their animals.

Bananas I tell you.

If this thing is the best we can do,...

Where do I surrender to the cats?

Might as well get it over with.

Can we get one fitted for the office fridge?

Sung has three cats, one of whom is named Momo. One day Sung found Momo paralyzed on floor, dehydrated and jaundice. A vet diagnosed her with pancreatitis, which caused her to stop eating normally. But with three cats in the house, Sung didn't realize Momo hadn't been eating.

Just go to any local pet store, they're actually induction centers. You'll be given your collar and cutesy slave name, something like "Mr. Sprinkles."

I read that as fecal recognition.  That could work, too.

But anyways, I think a facial recognition cat door would be more useful: http://hackaday.com/2010/05/14/cat-door-unlocks-via-facial-recognitio n /

Why is my cat overheating?  What's it doing that it generates so much thermal output?

Crowd-funders are certainly being separated from a lot of their money these days. I guess it's easier than selling Amway.

I have to supervise cat meal times. The fat one knows why, but she still makes halfhearted attempts to shove the slower eaters out of the way.

As for the cats-conquering-the-world thing, well... they have me pretty well trained, it's true.

I can see the wide use for this.

CSB:
I have one cat that was fat but I'm slimming down. She's kind of lazy and more focused on food. The other is active and the correct weight, but less dominant and he's not as focused on food. He prefers attention and praise as his reward most times.

This had me worried about limiting food, they share the food bowl and of course it's hard to keep one cat or dog away from another's food. We paid attention and feed them more wet food and less kibble, and that works because the fat cat likes kibble more but we were lucky to find an easy solution.
---

So, I can see the problem in slimming down one cat. It can be difficult when you work all day or odd hours and can't be there to monitor their eating.

I've got a couple of these:
www.catscenterstage.com

It works better for dogs because of the size of portions, but my cats like it just the same.  I've got 1 cat that will gorge on whatever is put in front of him, and I have 1 cat that regulates himself.  Needless to say, the porker will gladly finish up what ever the other one leaves behind.

Previous versions are labeled "Le Bistro" but current versions look like "lebistro" which is much funnier to say.  It's what you would expect Destro's lesbian sister to be named.   Lebestro.

My two permanent outdoor moocher cats have a great way to solve this. It's called a "swat in the face" with a paw. Self-regulatory, they are.

Free-feeding helps in these situations... Most cats are self-regulating when it comes to food, if it is always available. However, mine do get a bit concerned if they can see silver at the bottom of the bowl. It is important enough to wake me a 5am to let me know.

This does nothing to prevent a cat from overeating, it just allows you to monitor how much each cat is eating.
Now if the deluxe model could be set to cover over the food when the "wrong" cat is at the bowl it would be slightly more useful.
But even then, I know my cat would just reach in with his paw and pull the food out, bypassing the facial scan.

I think for monitoring a cat's health, it would be easier to track the food and water consumption at the back end of the process... having a cat box that detects which cat has entered the box and how much solid and liquid waste it leaves behind... any significant changes in inputs will show up as changes in output too.  Both methods fail to capture losses by barfing though.

Nope, sorry. Free feeding was how she went from 9 pounds to 15. She's no more self-regulating than my fat ass is.

She probably needs prozac or something.

This. Plus, I would also like if it would dispense food 10-15 kernels no less than 20 minutes after the previous 10-15 kernels have been eaten, for the one cat who can't be trusted not to binge-and-purge.

That just gave me the mental image of a cat scarfing down food, waiting a few minutes, then sticking a paw down his throat to cause him to throw up.

The vet tells me she has a kitty version of irritable bowel, but sometimes I suspect your scenario is closer to the truth.

I got one for my cats and it literally took them minutes to figure out how to reach up inside it and manually turn the mechanism that dispenses the food.

/Also has cats who can't free feed otherwise they turn into lardasses

I have strange feeling that one cat would just curl up on the scale and sleep there.
