...an "alarming" melt in surface permafrost - releasing huge amounts of gas like the popping of a champagne cork.

That's not good.

...known by the local indigenous population as the 'End of the World'.

That would be interesting to see up close and personal.
Who's up for a spelunking Fark party? That Koivumaki chick from the other thread isn't invited, for obvious reasons.

Another theory is that it is a sinkhole caused by collapsing rock

I doubt this is the case because when the camera pans around you can see that same rock strewn about haphazardly well beyond the outside area.
Besides, it wouldn't explain the type and elevation of the rock right around the perimeter of the hole which is clearly different than the surroundings and much higher.

This is a great example of why we really need to pay more respect to the Earth. After all, how would you like it if someone made a news story out of gas being released from the hole in your end?

And on the other rend, the first (and thankfully only) time I saw that abortion of a movie I pretty much went "Anakin is being chased by the entire Mayan underworld?  Well, that explains much..."

A massive hole of unknown depth has been discovered in a gas-rich but remote Russia peninsula, known by the local indigenous population as the 'End of the World'.

I feel fine.

Actually, those who support environmentalism the most also consume more electricity. I think that study was done in England, so it doesn't include electrical consumption by Teslas.

I'm not a huge fan of fracking, but can't stand the detractors that want to blame it for everything.

I'm a geologist by training and now am in the financial side of the industry helping to raise hundreds of millions of dollars for companies to develop mines ("rape the planet", in your words) to provide metals critical to most aspects of modern life from infrastructure to electronics.  Look around you... if you can't grow it you have to mine it.

I do drive a Tesla, but don't have the delusion that I'm saving the planet by doing so, but love the technology, performance, and the looks of the car.  DId I look at the Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf?  Sure, for about two seconds each.  Crappy looking cars with econo-box performance at high prices.  Since I live in Ontario where typically more than 75% of our power generation is from non-carbon sources such as nuclear and hydro-electric dams, and I charge in the "off-peak" times, I do have the added benefit of reducing my fossil fuel consumption, and the cost per kilometre is about one-quarter of what my gasoline car costs, but those factors had a modest weighting in my overall decision process.

Yup, the milker for our all-organic dairy farm don't use that much electricity, can almost run it off of goats, but the goats don't burn hot enough.
