"how to do computers"

This is a man paid to speak words on TV.

He's a caustic piece of shiat. They have the panel show he's on playing at the gym when I go, and he's neither funny, nor insightful. He's just an asshole. The rest of the panel does all they can to try to spin his bullshiat in a reasonable light, but half the time they give up and just go to commercial with an exasperated "OKAY..."

Funny how often just a visual of person can summarize the totality of their being.

I like the comment thread for that article that vacillates between "Chinaman is offensive" and "he's a Democrat and that's what Democrats really think!"

It's like a whole whirlwind of idiots in one, convenient place.

Should have been a "?" in there with the "Chinaman is offensive" summation.  Some day I'll learn to use "preview".

I don't know anything about the Rep Honda or the Fox host, but just reading the quotes it doesn't seem that bad.  He used the term "Chinamen" to describe Chinese people, and he corrected himself immediately after he said it.  While "Chinaman" is an outdated term, it is hardly racist to use it to describe someone who is Chinese.  How if he was referring to all SE Asians, the complaint might have some meat on it, but as it sits, it seems like a big to do about nothing.  It's not like he called them gooks, or slopes, or some other actual racist term.

It was the rant that did him in.
blah blah 'they hack us'.

What about the part where he suggested they had to come over here to learn computers?

Chinaman, like Oriental, is considered an offensive term, not simply outdated.  Much like "negro", which is both outdated and offensive.

No one on that show is capable of being reasonable.

All are utter pieces of shiat, and Beckel isn't even the worst.

I'm looking at you, Bolling, you towering sack of maggot dung.

Mentat: What about the part where he suggested they had to come over here to learn computers?

What's wrong with that?  He was specifically talking about Chinese attack on US computer systems.  Students come here from China get their Computer Science degree at an American university, then go back to China when they graduate and go to work for the Chinese government (or whoever) hacking computers.  Doesn't seem a particularly racist thought.  I went to school with many people from other countries who came over here to get their degree and then went home to use them.

and this guy is fox's "liberal" on the panel?

2014-07-15 07:18:57 PM
"I went swimming. My eyes blew up, and it made me look Oriental," Beckel said.

How old is this guy? Even my 84-year-old mother doesn't use "oriental" anymore.

Lionel Mandrake: No one on that show is capable of being reasonable.

It's sad that I think he's the most reasonable one on that show. Dana Perino should be teaching preschool somewhere. Greg Gutfeld is terrible. The person who isn't Robin Meade is worthless. Bolling is however the worst. Someone needs to kick him in the balls repeatedly.

2014-07-15 07:22:45 PM
if he were one of the actors there that play a conservative he would still have a job.

2014-07-15 07:24:27 PM
So he's like a steampunk racist. Cool.

2014-07-15 07:24:44 PM
Good. Kick him out and put an ACTUAL liberal in there.
Beckel is a xenophobic anachronism, and a yammering burnout to boot.

FlashHarry: and this guy is fox's "liberal" on the panel?

It's FOX...99% of commentators are photogenic hotties towing the Ailes line, the rest are slovenly, foul-mouthed, unappealing, shrills representing what FOX viewers imagine to be typical liberals

Had a 60 year old coworker who no matter how many times I tried to correct would still use the term.  Even in front of and to Asian customers.

Sometimes it's hard to keep up with these kinds of changes in the rules. You'll see for yourself when "Asian" is considered derogatory 20 years from now. It'll have you scratching your head and going what? It was never derogatory before! And I never meant it that way! Why am I in so much trouble?

Eh, things tend to work better when you stop talking about race. Once you inject it into a discussion, that's all people focus on.

FTFAC: I watch a lot of news across a lot of outlets and actually watch the show Beckel is on. He is a liberal as the day is long and is prone to some crude comments at times. Are you really calling that a racial slur, especially when he was referring to the country of China and not Chinese people in general, much less Chinese Americans. By the way, do the fools that think Beckel is not really a Democrat because he works for Fox think that Gingrich is not really a Republican since he now works for CNN?

Wait, what?

Beckel is a Democrat now? CNN is to partisan Democratic politics what FOX is to partisan Republican politics?

I really, really shouldn't read the comments there. At least not without a sophisticated adult beverage at the ready.

Because it's incredibly retarded. Some of the strongest hackers in the world have been teenage kids that have never taken a comp sci course in their lives. You don't learn to hack by taking classes at a university. It's like saying Iranians are studying physics in our universities, then going back home and building atomic bombs, or something equally stupid.

I miss that extraterrestrial guy. You know the one... that liberal punching bag... What was his name? Ah yes, Alan Colmes. That's it. I hope he made it safely back to his home planet. Man, could he take a pounding. Extremely resilient and of good nature.

Beckel is okay (as a person). But you can really tell he's been getting worn down on the job... Also, I think he's been sick recently. Seems like he's lost weight. He used to laugh more.

That's interesting because I just read a book, Kind One by Laird Hunt, and he deliberately leaves out racial identity of most of his characters.  I found myself desperately trying to pinpoint their racial admixture because, dammit, it makes a difference.  I challenge anyone who thinks, "why can't we just forget about race?" to read this book.

Just say where the person is from...Like I have a college buddy from Boston, but if you want to know why they stuff the Thanksgiving turkey with sticky rice, it's because his parents are from China.

His older brother looks like a heavy from a Hong Kong action flick, but he sounds like a prize fighter from Southie.

Passion and Intrigue on The Five

I just dug this one up because Samantha Bee's bit was hilarious. But in re-watching it I find this isn't the first time he's used the term "Chinaman". (see it about 30 seconds in).
