(Washington Post)   Police impressed by guy who robbed a Miami bank, then drove his getaway car to Bellingham, Washington in 50 hours. Presumably he had a full tank of gas, a half-pack of cigarettes, it was dark, and he was wearing sunglasses   (washingtonpost.com) divider line 77

I'm about to drive a car from Los Angeles to Burlington, VT, so this story is relevant to my interests. That's an insanely good solo driving time.

Weird, I found no mention of a bank robbery.

I'm impressed....those cities are essentially at opposite corners of the country.

Diagonally.  Google maps says 50 hours of drive time, but that's really a feat.

Next time change cars dumbass. That's almost as good as the guy here who shot a bunch of fellow armoured car guards then stole hus mother's truck to make his getaway. They were blaring details of the truck on the radio for a day before they caught him trying to enter the US - IN THE SAME TRUCK. He didn't even have a passport.

Meth is a helluva drug...

reads article:
Police don't know who took the black 2012 Jeep Patriot or why they sped from one corner of the country to the other.

Hmmm...no bank robbery, but with a travel time like that, I'm guessing it was destined for Canada and the thief got cold feet

Meth.

It delivers.

For those of you studying for your GED in law: stolen vehicle found in bank parking lot =/= bank robbery.

You're welcome.

2014-07-15 01:21:23 PM
I wonder if there was some time between when the car was actually stolen and when someone noticed it was gone.  Because Miami to Blaine, WA in 50 hours would require a lot of speeding, increasing the chances of getting caught.  It would only have to be maybe 6 or fewer extra hours, but you'd need time to stop for gas, pee, and make drive thru stops at a minimum.

Or this was meant to be insurance fraud.

CSB -

One of my greatest achievements as an uncle was to get my 3 year old Nephew to watch Blues Brothers, and taught him to say "Jesus H Tapdancing Christ".

His mother was not thrilled. My mother was quite annoyed as well. Good times.

I can see robbing a bank in Bellingham and driving straight through to Miami...

But, why in the Fark would you do it the other way around?

2014-07-15 01:22:23 PM
"Police in the town of Blaine, Washington, near the Canadian border found a car in a bank parking lot on July 2 that had been stolen in Miami just about two days earlier."

How do you steal an entire parking lot?

also this.

/meth had to be involved with that kinda time

Also, I figure the thief dumped the car in Washington and stole a different car to hop the border, hoping to get through before that car was reported stolen.  And a car with WA plates in Vancouver wouldn't arouse suspicion.

If that's for real, wow. Either multiple drivers or major drugs.

I did Chicago to California last year and it took me three days with 12 hour driving days.

California to Connecticut took me five days, but that was with stops.

Even Connecticut to Chicago was two days, but that was hauling a Uhaul.

I think my best was Riverside, CA to Salt Lake City, UT in 12 hours (with stops). But I was 20 then and invincible.

2014-07-15 01:28:14 PM
It took me 21 hours to drive from Miami to Russellville, AR, so yeah.

That, or he simply walked across the border, given Blaine's proximity to the border crossings.

When I finished grad school in Boston I took my time driving home to San Diego solo, including a couple rest days. Ten days total, including the rest days. I honestly wasn't in any hurry and it was interesting to see the country from the ground like that. Most of the drive was on I-40, which got awfully boring once I got into western Oklahoma.

Maybe the owner of the car neglected to report it stolen fot some time after the departure.

Considering that the headline itself is the qualified reference, I don't think there was any slippage.

there is a network of license plate cameras on every highway in the country. auto finance companies use this for recovery location. you cant hide from big brother. (well I can but I have a special set of skills)

Well, that's why you swap plates with other cars. Change one in Florida with another late model Jeep, then change it again in, say, Alabama. Even better if you can alter the number with a piece of tape.

/Not that I'd do something like that myself

Smh. Let me help you all out. A car can be REPORTED stolen hours, days, or even weeks after it is ACTUALLY stolen. The theft could have happened overnight and the owner did not realize until the nextr morning, when he/she reported it. it could have been a second car that the owner did not realize was gone until they got home from work. Jeez, CSI is making dummies of us all. Sometimes you just gotta use a little common sense. Stop looking for semen.
