I don't really see the problem with allowing knives. Almost everyone has one on land. Very few random stabbings. Just statistics wise, letting the people keep their pocket knives wouldn't hurt anyone. No Machette style bandoleers or anything, just some normal pocket knives like everyone already has. These particular blades probably still wouldn't pass that muster, especially if we're judging for style.

You know, a thought just occurred to me. How many passengers of the four planes on 9/11 do you suppose had pocketknives on them?

I don't think you understand. The cockpit doors are bullet proof, not pocket knife proof.

If we let knives on planes, pilots would be defenseless.

We deserve the TSA because we are a country of idiots.

Last year, the TSA confiscated 1,477 LOADED guns at checkpoints. How stupid do you have to be to "forget" that you are carrying a loaded gun when walking through security at an airport?

As long as we have people like this traveling, we're going to have the TSA.

uh. We have the TSA because of a raghead with a utility knife.

The TSA has absolutely nothing to do with guns, and guns with ammo are in fact allowed on planes. They just have to be checked instead of carry on.

Bullet-proof != automatically mean knife-proof. Early-generation bullet-proof vests wouldn't stop a knife. Too much pressure focused on too small of a point.

But yes, a bullet-proof door is probably knife-proof too.

That's my point. We are too stupid as a country to remember to check our LOADED guns rather than bringing them through security. The TSA is using these stats to justify their existence. If all those (legal) gun-toting morons would start actually following the airport rules, it would reduce the power of the TSA.

The TSA relies on fear-mongering. And we keep feeding them guns and knives and explosive propane tanks to add to their argument.

based on the gao's tests, if tsa caught 1400 people, at least 3000 weren't caught. and yet, the sky didn't fall.

No, they don't.

They don't need to justify their existence. They do not justify their existence.

If they did, they would point towards all the knives lighters and corkscrews they confiscated.

Do you know why they would point to the knives and corkscrews?

Because if they find a gun in your luggage, they'll let you mail it home to yourself, or go back and check it.

Last time I was in ATL, I checked my bag with my sidearm in it, then was told by the counter lady to hand walk it through the security point so the TSA could inspect it.

Uh, no.  Sorry lady.  I sometime wonder if I was one moment of inattention away from becoming an intentional TSA statistic that day.

I carry a swiss army knife (climber swiss model, I think) with me nearly everywhere I go.  On more than one occasion I've gotten asked why I carry it around, as if it isn't a normal thing to do.  Best part is, if someone sees it, means I'm using the damn thing for something or other so the answer to their question is obvious.

I carry a Swiss Army Tinker. Grew up in the hills of Appalachia so a pocketknife is just something you have. I forget I have it, on the way to the airport usually, and stick it in my shaving bag, normally with a safety razor, nail clippers, small scissors, I always thought it got lost in the shuffle. This last time to the airport, I said, "what the hell, these are eighteen bucks, experiment time" I threw it in the bowl with the rest of my pocket contents through the scanner. Not a peep, collected it on the other side, and went on my way.

Sometimes, the two situations go hand-in-hand. You can fly into JFK with a properly stowed firearm just fine. Getting back on the plane to go home is a different story. Unloaded handgun in bag + ammunition in the same bag = loaded handgun. That's a mandatory 3.5.
