Dunn's colleagues issued fiery, public denunciations of his proposal to consider cutting rates. Twinkle Cavanaugh, the commission president, said talking about rate reductions would allow "environmental extremist groups" to "trot out their fancy San Francisco environmental lawyers and junk science hucksters to make what amounts to a legal, judicial case against coal production within our borders." She said Dunn's proposal was orchestrated by environmentalists "hiding behind a curtain like the Wizard of Oz."

Alabama y'all.

Is it really surprising or salacious that an organization tries to elect people who have favorable positions towards their interests?

The unfortunate part is the disproportionate power they are given because of their wealth, but there's unfortunately very little to be done about it.

Well good, I hope this nets the coal companies someone who supports the EPA.

Maybe they'll spend so much time and effort biatch-slapping each other that someone with half a brain will get elected instead.

I was going to quote this exact excerpt and make note of the fact that this is one of the smartest people in Alabama.

No, it's not surprising.  What's surprising is the degree of Orwellian double-think required for Tea Baggers to believe that a hard core Alabama conservative is a liberal environmental wacko because he had the audacity to question a utility for gouging its customers.  We laugh at the Tea Baggers, but the culture of fear they've built around themselves scares the hell out of me sometimes.

The energy industry's chosen candidate is Chris "Chip" Beeker, a Republican challenging Dunn in the GOP primary. And there is no mistaking Beeker for an environmentalist: On his campaign website, Beeker claims the planet is cooling, not warming. "The so-called 'climate change crisis' is about as real as unicorns and little green men from Mars," he says.
