Hero tag? In a war of aggression, the only heroes are those who refuse to participate. Might as well use the hero tag for a story about the Germans who invaded France.

yeah man because you know the US were the aggressors on 9/11 and the Taliban totally wasn't harboring al Qaeda.

What is like to see is a visa for that guy who did sign language interpretation at the Mandela funeral. Sure, he didn't save any US troops in Afghanistan, but he's a comic genius. Stick him in Times Square next to the Naked Cowboy and have him sign what the bigoted Elmos are screaming at people.

I'd pay to see that.

Oh you mean how the country where those assholes lived actively tracked them down and then prosecuted them.  Because you know the Taliban totes captured bin Laden and then tried him in a court of law.

Oh wait, that's right, the Taliban gave al Qaeda safe harbor and rebuffed every call for them to turn them out/arrest and try them.

These sophomoric attempts at relativism only demonstrate your lack of realistic grounding and moral clarity.

No matter how wretched and evil the native regime is, if you help the foreign invaders, no matter how rightfull and altruistic their cause, you do not have a future there when they leave.  If you collaborate you evacuate.

I'm sure there have been exceptions, but the archetype of xenophobia, Afghanistan, aint one of them.

Not that I'm defending the USA's military action in Iraq and Afghanistan, but the first rule of anyone who's anti-war has to be "hate the war, love the warrior". Or else you're more harm than good to the movement. This story was clearly about good actions undertaken by a good soldier--not seeing a reason to bust out the soap boxes.

We had access to the guy who acquired locally sourced crap for the SF group that was housed in our DTOC. That guy was amazing, and deserved a medal and citizenship, without question. So did the interpreter who helped us man the gates of the ammo factory we stayed in for a couple of weeks in Baghdad. These guys threw themselves into our lion's den, hoping we'd figure out how to keep them from being eaten before it was all said and done. I don't know where they are today - I hope they're here with their families, and that they are safe.

WOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

I usually don't feed the trolls. I'm not sure how this works. Is this the part where I compare you to Hitler? Or are you the one who is supposed to compare me to Hitler? Does it even matter as long as Hitler is mentioned? I mean, you already mentioned the German invasion of France, but I COULD be convinced that you were referring to the Kaiser's forces and not the Nazis. Hitlers and Nazis all around. Hitlers and Nazis for everyone!

When push comes to shove, if I have to call SOMEONE a hero, I'll err on the side of the guy actively trying to prevent people from stepping on bombs. Both foreign invaders and locals. Think about that, Dick.

Not sure if serious...

The only ones who harbored Ted Kaczynski were the voices in his head.

A very cogent point.  But while Afghanistan may be in the lead of the xenophobia race, there's plenty of competition on their tails, and sadly some people here in the US would like to see us make a move to the outside after the last urn in that race.  Good for Captain Kinsella who rejected that shiat and stood up for someone who had stood by him and his command while they did their best  to improve things for the Afghan people, no matter what anyone thinks about the wisdom of that effort or the motivations behind it.

The Taliban offered to hand over Bin Laden. Bush refused to abide by their extradition law and turned down the offer. But, Bin Laden (or 9/11) really wasn't the issue. Bush told his biographer, in 2000, that he would invade Afghanistan and Iraq. In his first cabinet meeting he told his cabinet to prepare for war with Afghanistan and Iraq.
