That car sold at the Monterey auctions last year. RM I think.

Yeah, that's a flat 12 in there. Not exactly a bug.

I love the Gulf livery. I'll try to get to this auction to check this beast out, but car week is insane around here and I'll be pretty tied up. I'm really stoked on seeing the Can-Am cars race, I'm trying to score some Concors tickets without paying but that's not real high on my list.

The bug was white, if I remember correctly.  Old #53, Steve McQueen.  He won the final drag race when he stomped the gas and the front wheels of the car went into the air like a dragster.

Not that I would turn it down given the opportunity, but I'd prefer the ultimate evolution of the 917, Mark Donohue's 917-30, the "car the killed Can-Am". When they asked him if it had enough power (1500bhp in qualifying trim, over 1000 set up for the race), he allegedly said that he would have enough power if he could spin the wheels in top gear at the end of the straight.

Lost Thought 00: Who is Steve McQueen?

He's a relic of an era that celebrated white male privilege and loud cars that got really terrible gas mileage.

/ plus he was a smoker...

Yeah, a real man.

Not some hipster who pedals a one-speed bike through Portland while drinking fair trade coffee and yelling at cars for being bad for mother earth...maaan.

Not all men of that time were oppressors, of course.

There were some muscular exceptions, like Elliot Gould, Alan Alda and Tony Randall.
