You must be mad to think you will achieve anything with a hashtag. I have been using sad face emoticons and several have so far escaped. I would suggest liberal use of clipart and updating Real Player will eventually have the desired effect of getting the girls back home and women to be allowed to drive the world over.

I thought the Internet pretty much gave up on them when they saw a chance to resurrect Reading Rainbow

Hey subby, because of that hashtag, you're still talking about it.  I think it did its job.

Hashtags are for the people to speak to power, not the farking government to use instead of actions.  Christ... are there any adults in DC at all?

I guess that liberal <insert cause of the week> internet outrage & empathy doesn't work nearly as well as a couple LGBs.  Who'd a thunk it.

2014-07-14 03:37:04 PM
We need to use TWICE as many hashtags.  When something isn't working, the proper response is always to do it more.  Like the war on drugs, which we will surely win if we try hard enough.

ManateeGag: Hey subby, because of that hashtag, you're still talking about it. I think it did its job.

This argument will only lead in circles.

Subby's hypothetical rejoinder would be that talking will be as useless as the original hashtags.

2014-07-14 03:37:35 PM
i thought the hashtag thing was more to make them feel like people cared and show solidarity with their families and auxh. but sure, i guess if you can't personally go into the jungle and save them by carrying them out on your back one by one while ripping the terrorists limb from limb with your bare hands you might as well not do anything

Yeah, Science News' cover story this week is all about how online activism isn't worth very much. Not exactly news, I suspect, but an awful lot of people seem to think that tweeting a hashtag is going to achieve something.

What good does thinking about it do, though?

Also, Boko Haram kidnapped schoolboys right before they kidnapped the girls. Why didn't they get a hashtag? :(

See, I just gave this a frowny face, so I did my part

It's so cute that you think talking about something is actually doing something about it.

NONONO It does activism! Which solves everything because now people are aware of it! It's like how no one knows about child abuse if you don't change your Facebook picture to a children's cartoon and how no one knew who Kony was before the Kony2012 hashtag, and how no one knew who Boko Haram was before this!

Well, it does help make things come out in front of all of this Obamagate bullshiat. The problem isn't the people who think the hashtag will help, it's the ones who think that by reading the hashtag, they've somehow done their civic duty.

It's like feeling that you've done something for animal's rights because you never FFW the Shania Twain guilt trip commercial.

You sure it was the hashtag, and not the um... ya know, being kidnapped by terrorists, that "inspired" them to escape?

Exactly.  But if you don't participate in the cause celeb for the week, then it shows you don't care.  Because tweeting or liking a hashtag makes a difference.

You kids tweet and like things all you want.  Real adults will be out there actually doing things, like trying to rescue those girls.  Of course there aren't any of them left.

The hashtags aren't intended to actually do anything.  They just allow folks to autofellate over how wonderful they are for thinking the right thoughts.

While you stupid libs were doing hashtags, I infiltrated the camp by posing as a dashiki salesman.  Then I used some of my Core training to subdue the guards with a series of roundhouse kicks.  Then I rescued the girls and busted into a press conference proving that they were being held the whole time and were not missing In action.

And then I come back to the world and I see all those maggots at the airport, protesting me, spitting.  Calling me baby killer and all kinds of vile crap!  Who are they to protest me?  Who are they?  Unless they've been me and been there and know what the hell they're yelling about!

Done in one. Now, turn northern Nigeria into a smoking, glassy bowl. It won't free them, but we'll all feel slightly better.

The liberal equivalent of praying.

I remember that time I brought peace to the Middle East, liberated North Korea, stopped the Mexican cartels and turned them into a branch of Habitat For Humanity, and stopped all racism and misogyny, all with the power of my almighty hashtag. Good times, good times!
