Police morale in Fruitland Park, Florida has been shaken after a deputy chief and officer resigned when the Federal Bureau of Investigations identified them as members of the Ku Klux Klan.

Oh, come on, FBI.  The place is called 'Fruitland', they were obviously just in the KKK for the fancy robes.

So, really closer to half then.

Percentages from such small numbers (the town only employes 13 officers) are always sketchy to me. If it were 15% of all the Florida forces combined, that would actually be a pretty staggering number. In this case, it's just two guys in a small town. Two that were caught, anyway.

Oh, Christ, it's the town next to The Villages.  My parents live there.  The idea of the Villages in that you exist outside of reality sounds terrible until you leave the confines of The Villages and encounter actual reality in the form of Wildwood or Fruitland Park.

From my experience, the average person in Fruitland Park is drunk and wearing camo.  BTW, when did camo become a lifestyle signifier?  Was it the Duck Dynasty show that did this?  I don't recall so many camo hats 10 years ago.

Sounds like you spent too much time in the Villages. My observations about people wearing camo for normal activities and being a lifestyle signifier have been about the same over the last 20 years.

There's still plenty of Florida that hasn't been over run by the assholes from out of state. These are Florida grow assholes and much smaller in concentration. Maybe 10% as opposed to the 90% of carpetbaggers.

I really don't think anyone, anywhere takes it seriously other than a fringe of a fringe.  Need to stop giving them press and attention, the only two things they still actually have.

And to suggest there are no northern racists is ludicrous.

Ummmm... I hate to break it to you .. but "The South" kinda exists everywhere outside of most major metro areas.

There is a significant problem with KKK and other hates groups well north of "the south"

My impression is that a significant portion of the Republican base has decided that by electing a blah man as President, the country has abandoned its core values (whatever they might believe them to be).  As such, they need to be "Red Dawn"-style revolutionaries in order to "take are country back" (sic), but the vast majority of them are too cowardly to actually do anything beyond hoarding guns, ammo, and related gear.

I've occasionally heard them described as "patriot cosplayers" (the exact wording changes depending on who you ask), but to be honest, even furries seem perfectly sane compared to these people.

To add to my earlier point: I am aware that "patriot cosplay" (or whatever you want to call it) has been a thing since at least the early 90's, but it seems to have become a lot more popular since about 2008.

You would think wrong. Not pointing out how dumb they are by giving them press would be a bad thing. Ignoring a infection doesn't make it go away.

Seems about right to me.

Estimates of the percentage of the general population who are very prejudiced generally run to about 20%, plus or minus. 15% is about what I would expect from an American population, although in many places where ethnic strife, racism or religious bigotry are intense, I would not be surprised at a considerably higher percentage.

You have to remember that not all racists, bigots and xenophobes are idiots (many of the genteel racists are quite intelligent people in terms of "general intelligence" or professional education), while not all idiots are racist, bigots and xenophobes. The Klan draws from a sub-population where the class of idiots intersecf with the class of racialists.

Many political racists would disdain the KKK because it is a working class or lower middle class fraternal organization, except perhaps for the leadership or a few elite lodges, clans, or whatever they call them in that particular organization. When it is out of fashion, fewer elite members are interested in joining. When it is in fashion, it is run by them.

Interestingly, it was, in the early Twentieth Century, run very much like a pyramid scheme, with the Klan selling sheets (yes!) and ranks and other membership benefits to the membership. A campaigning journalist by the name of Stetson (like the hat) infiltrated the Klan, learned all their secrets and exposed them. These were considered ridiculous and as a result of publicity, small children took to playing Klan and the adult population laughed them to scorn. They sank lower than the Loyal Order of Water Buffalo thereafter.

You can read about this in Freakonomics or on the web. The book has a chapter on the economics of racism as well as explaining why gang members live with their Mothers or Grandmothers (basically gangs have the same corporate structure as WalMart, while the Klan had the same business plan as Amway).

Fine, possibly.  Then how about reporting "15% of cops in FL are in the KKK!" not as an "OMG!" piece, but as a, "What a bunch of idiots, lets point and laugh at them" piece?

I just don't think anyone takes them seriously beyond people who CARE DEEPLY about social issues, or people trying to sell papers (or page views).

There's a song by an African band that I have on an old cassette tape somewhere which has lyrics which to my ear sound exactly like "Zuluman got a little bit of Amway".  I have no idea whether this is a fair transliteration or not, but bully for the Zulus. I wouldn't recommend selling Amway but it shows a desire to get ahead at least.

The real lyrics of one of the songs (possibly from another group) boast that the singer's wife bought a taxi. Seeing as it is traditional for women to do the agricultural work while the men behave like a bunch of American Appalachians (fishing, hunting, talking politics and bosh, and maybe fighting a bit), commerce is also a largely pink colour occupation in much of Africa, so it would be the wife who takes care of business at the botega or taxi company, while the husband does the important stuff like holding up walls and holding down as much African beer as he can drink.

I love world music. I can't make out a word they say unless it is in some sort of French or English pidgen.

The trouble with Western Music isn't that it's bad. It's that I have a bad habit of listening carefully to the lyrics. So many ruined songs because I know what the Hell they are about. You have to laugh when Conservatives adopt "Born in the USA" or "Rockin' in the Free World" as political anthems. Laugh or weep.

The only thing that can beat a man with a bad brain worm is a man with a good brain worm. Or sumpting like that.

Try thinking of another song that tends to stick in your head, like "My boyfriend's back", "Leader of the Pack", or "Don't know much (about history)".

It's a bit like "a hair of the dog" cures for hangovers, but it may work.

This is FARK.  It's not about big news.   "Why is this news?" and "Move on, nothing to see here folks" are the two most annoying and common internet posts.  Way to go.

you do realize that in the early days of baseball no team was integrated not even the Yankees or the Indians.

If you are ever in Indy and go to the state museum they have (or had) a section of KKK stuff on display. It seems that area was a hotbed of KKK membership. They even had a little section "ladies of the KKK"
