1,500 years old or as the French would say 'vieux ans de pommes de terre'...

Found next to the remains was a rudimentary bulletin board highlighting the day's political news.

Once again, a pompous digger has a lame theory about how all members of a community treated one member without knowing the social status of that member.
Nothing worse than an uppity digger.

while i wasn't going to put it quite like this, i did come here to ask, how do they have ANY clue whatsoever about the child's social standing? how the child was treated? great, the child was buried in a similar manner to others around the area...that doesn't really reflect on the person's life

Was it's favorite color 'ham'?  Is that how they knew it had Downs?

While I'm nothing more than an expert in all things, especially Archaeology, which I did my GED in, I'd say there's plenty of other things discovered on the site that help them reach that conclusion. That part just didn't make the story. It happens often. I'd be surprised if the noble archaeologist just thought "Zut, I have to be being ze politically correct, alors, and make everyone love ze child de pomme de terre."

Indeed. The so-called "extrapolation" is the worst kind of science. Perhaps the parents were well off and had no other children so this one was allowed to live rather than being subject to infanticide.

There.

Right there is a plausible theory too.

Ya basically the people weren't jerks enough to just throw the body in a hole or desecrate the remains so it means they treated the child nice while alive.

I would point to recent history where making fun of retarded people was AOK and most people thought it was funny. I don't recall in the past 30 - 40 years people with downs being buried any differently than regulars. I wouldn't say we currently treat downs people all that well. I guess we don't kill them but is that really saying we treat them well ?

there likely was other evidence in the vicinity...a good journalist would include such information...either we have a grave digger with a know-it-all attitude, a poor example of journalism, or both

Low intelligence, pronounced forehead, penchant for digging, etc.

How did they differentiate them from normal cavemen?

We had progressed passed the point of 'cavemen' 1500 years ago.

FTFA: "This Down syndrome child was not treated differently at death than others in the community,"

Maybe not, idiot, but doesn't the fact that he died as a child tell you something?  I'm betting that he died from getting the shiat beat out of him by 1500-year-old bullies.

Maybe he could count to turnip.

Man, a 1500 year old bully would probably be more danger to himself than to his victim. Just sayin.

Dude, have you considered that maybe since he had Down's, he couldn't tell potatoes and turnips apart? It's not like he was a botanicalist or something.

Around here, bullies' life-expectancies are 75 years or less.
