Essentially, yes, it's an eternal party.  They have parties to "decompress" from bigger parties, and parties to raise funds in order to pay to go to the next party.  So they'll have a decomp party to get over this and to prepare for BM in August.  Then another decomp party after that to prepare for the next regional event.  It is indeed and endless cycle.  There are plenty of folks in DFW that spend thousands of dollars and countless hours of their lives just to go "camping" is they like to call it.

As a guy who is repacking my tough boxes from Reclaimation to go to Transformus in a few days, I can attest to that.  For some, spending money on a car or boat is their thing.  For me, I spend money on sound, lights, new camping gear, and bar supplies.  I've received multiple art grants for fire art, and I'm working on a massive arcade machine with 4 foot tall joysticks and foot wide action buttons with a 40 foot screen that has fire effects for wins.

The regionals are independent from Burning Man, each with their own board of directors.  Once they meet a certain criteria for financial preparedness and transparency, and adhere to the 10 principles of Burning Man, they are sanctioned and sometimes the events can get a better deal on liability insurance, which is very expensive for this very reason.

Burning Man doesn't get any money from the regionals.  You should go to one, it's fun as long as you don't decide to jump in the effigy fire.

Well, from a personal prospective, I've never worried about being authentic, and I don't even know what that means to quest for it.  I go for the art and music, and the ability to get away from the default world for a bit.  I've never worried about what others think of me as that is the entire idea, be yourself, however you decide yourself should be at the moment.  As far as goggles are concerned, at Burning Man, there is a lot of dust considering the location.  The ones that do it at other events are usually steam punk enthusiasts, and although it's not my bag, I don't care what they do, as they are their own person and they are not me.  Too many people worry about what other people are doing in regular life.

A man walks into a bonfire....

Too soon?

So did they change the name to "Burnt Man" after it happened?

2014-07-14 12:55:46 PM
I am sure this was the bright point of everyone's burning man experience.

Reports are coming in that just before he burned he had assaulted a woman while wearing a bear costume.

I'd like to see a forklift lift a crate of forks. It'd be so damn literal. "Hey, you're using that machine to its exact purpose!" "That machine has been misunderstood for years!"

Mock26: I am sure this was the bright point of everyone's burning man experience.

I'm sure that we are all concerned about the people that witnessed this, the family of the person who ended his life (for whatever reason), and how this will affect the burner community at large.  I'm not exactly happy about the fact that this person did what he did, and although I feel bad that he decided to do so, most of my concern goes to the people that saw it happen.  It sucks and it doesn't represent the burner community.  This dude took his issues and threw it upon a bunch of people who just wanted to get away from the norm for a while without affecting anyone else.

I'm actually afraid that the thing that makes me happy 2 or 3 times a year is going to have issues due to one person's decision.  I know you are being snarky.  None of us are happy about this event.  It's incredibly sad for all persons involved.

You were there?  No snark, real question.

Here's a bunch of eyewitness accounts/reactions

From the accounts...

Burner Erik: This event was 18 and up only. The image of his hand reaching up will be with me for the rest of my life. Witnessing this will forever change how i view the frailty of life. The event paused for a hour or so after this occurred before slowly continuing on. I personally dedicated my entire 3 hour dj set to all of my fellow burners there and to the camp that is returning home with one less brother to call upon.

Statements like that are the reason I wouldn't cross the street to piss in the face of a 'burner' if they were on fire.

I know it's out there so it doesn't matter if I post it.  Here is the event.

So when someone decided that all they had to make others feel any better was to play music as normal, you say that you wouldn't piss on them to put them out if they were on fire.  Exactly what should they have done?

I'll say it this way, if you decide to get on a motorcycle and get in a wreck while racing, well, you had it coming.  If the event goes on after your crash, well, I wouldn't cross the street to piss on another racer's face if their vehicle was on fire.

See what happens?

It's not even Burning Man. It's just another damn hipster party in the desert.

It's a registered Burning Man Regional event. I about to attend one on Thursday that has 2700 attendees. I very rarely see hipsters at these events.

If you spent some time on the playa then you would understand the radical self-reliance practiced when we choose to decommodify that which seeks to control us through the lack of immediacy as when I say do or say as when I'm in the act of radical inclusion.

You'll never understand what it's like until you go to the playa.

So you are saying that you have never attended a burn right?  Either that or you are the guy who was butthurt that you didn't get laid and showered with psychedelics upon getting there.

I choose to decommodify that which seeks to commodify me by participating in the radical self-reliance of riding a bike with lights all over it.

I don't run in that circle.  I do a lot of electronics and cooking of food and making drinks.  People talking about the true meaning of life are not the ones around me, as we are living life in real time.  I wasn't aware that many waitresses went to these things, I never asked what they do IRL.  If they are cool then they are cool.  I've never known anyone, except for while I was deployed in Iraq, to have sex in a porta-shiater.  You sound bigoted.

Yes. And as long as those tours keep to themselves -- or are alcoholics, because everyone understands an alcoholic not drinking -- they're fine. I have tested this principle many, many times.

Say you don't drink because you're an alcoholic, and you're welcome. Say you don't drink because you don't like to drink, and your playa name immediately becomes re-christened to "Leo."

Not drinking at Burning Man is cause for immediate suspicion.

On the playa we practice the radical act of shirt gifting.  If you need a shirt, take a shirt.  If you have a shirt, leave a shirt.  Out in the default world, people exchange money for goods and services.  In the Real World, on the playa, shirts are radically gifted.

Does this subvert your whitebread corporate shirt-exchanged-for-currency paradigm?

I have been on Fark for a long, long time.  I am not as active here as I once was, but I don't recall seeing BM hate before and I truly do not understand it.  I have been a few times and am taking my wife for her first burn this year.  It is great fun and an awesome way to disconnect from "the real world" for a week.  The planning and preparation for the event are not to be taken lightly and for me, driving to and from is also an added trial  But I hope that I can continue to go for years to come.  It is truly an extraordinary week.

See what happens?

It's not even Burning Man. It's just another damn hipster party in the desert.

It's a registered Burning Man Regional event. I about to attend one on Thursday that has 2700 attendees. I very rarely see hipsters at these events.

Oh, God. It's a franchise.

I did go, in 1993. I won't spoil the memory by going a second time.
